From the Front Page...

Dark Match

Dean Ambrose defeated Ezekiel Jackson. Ambrose won with a running knee to the head. Ambrose cut a pre-match heel promo.

Good crowd. Pretty much sold out tonight. Much better than the abysmal 1,000 or so who attended the post-Labor Day Smackdown taping. 1/2 of the arena was tarped off for that one.

Michael Cole, Booker T and Josh Matthews on commentary. Lilian Garcia is the ring announcer.

Lilian introduced World Heavyweight Champion Sheamus, who cut a brief promo to start the show. Sheamus said he loves to fight (a promo straight out of Finlay’s playbook) so when Daniel Bryan asked for a rematch he simply answered “YES! YES! YES! YES! YES!” [Cue loud "YES!" chants from the Toledo crowd.] Out came Daniel Bryan. Sheamus continued “YESing” through Bryan’s entrance. Doesn’t look like we’re getting the main event that was advertised last night.

Sheamus and Daniel Bryan fought to an apparent no-contest. Alberto Del Rio and Ricardo Rodriguez interfered to cause the finish. Ricardo hit a (from my vantage-point) picture-perfect cross body on Sheamus followed by a kick from ADR. Bryan then locked Sheamus in the Yes! Lock before being pulled off by Scott Armstrong and Chad Patton. Daniel Bryan then argued with ADR and Rich Rod, almost coming to blows.

Backstage, the WWE medical staff evaluated Sheamus.

WWE Tag Team Champions Kofi Kingston and R-Truth defeated Hunico and Canacho. Primo, Epico and Rosa (accompanied by AW) were out before the bell to watch the match. They “scouted” from chairs that were set up on the ramp.

Brodus Clay defeated Jack Swagger (w/Dolph Ziggler and Vickie Guerrero) via DQ when Ziggler interfered. Ziggler took what looked like a hellacious bump from Brodus’s running headbutt on the outside apron by the announce table. Dolph, again, sells like a champ. I’m interested to see how that looks on TV. Clay cleared the ring of Ziggler/Swagger following the interference and danced w/five kids in the ring (JYD-style) after the match. Nice touch.

The advertised main event for the night was now Randy Orton and Big Show vs. Kane and Cody Rhodes.

The same Extreme Rules video package from last night was shown, modified slightly to include the final segment from last night’s Raw with John Cena and John Laurinaitis.

Eve was involved in a backstage segment with Daniel Bryan and Alberto Del Rio. Nothing notable here.

Damien Sandow was shown walking down the hallway while piano music played in the background. He debuts next. [EDIT: Maybe not.]

Derrick Bateman got a jobber entrance.

Sandow entered to Leonard Cohen’s classical music piece “Hallelujah.” Funny stuff. He responded to a “WHAT?” crowd chant with “Thank you for your irrelevant contribution.” He said he wouldn’t indulge the WWE Universe or Bateman (whom he called a “miscreant”) with a match. Sandow left. “You’re welcome.” Bateman demanded an opponent nonetheless. He got one…it was Ryback.

Ryback defeated Derrick Bateman in a total squash.

Randy Orton and Big Show defeated Kane and U.S. Champion Cody Rhodes.

Backstage, Matt Striker caught up with Sheamus, who sported a heavily-taped shoulder and said he “came here to fight.” Striker concluded that it looks like they’ll have their match after all.

Vickie Guerrero re-emerged with Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler. Swagger demanded a rematch from Clay, saying nobody could beat him twice in one night. Looks like they’re re-taping this one.

Brodus Clay defeated Jack Swagger via countout. Much shorter match than the first. Ziggler’s bump in this match was less impactful, taking a forearm from big Brodus. No kids into the ring to dance post-match this time. Expect a lot of post-production if this version of the match is used. The crowd was understandably bored seeing this the second time around.

Natalya came out for the jobber entrance.

WWE Divas Champion Layla defeated Natalya. Layla won in less than a couple of minutes.

Backstage, Eve directed the publicity photo shoot for Antonio Cesaro and Aksana and said something was missing. She said Cesaro looked too “dry” and asked for him to be oiled up. She told a staffer lady not to do it, instead demanding that Teddy apply the oil. He resisted at first, but after being told by Eve that he hadn’t done anything all day, he gave in and rubbed down Cesaro. I’m disappointed I didn’t get to see the former Claudio Castagnoli in action.

After the break, Kaitlyn told AJ she needed to stop having a pity party for herself. AJ delivered a hard slap to Kaitlyn that floored her.

Ricardo Rodriguez introduced Alberto Del Rio from the stage; ADR drove out in a fancy car. He is sitting in on commentary for the main event.

Sheamus defeated Daniel Bryan to retain the World Hvt. Championship. Sheamus threw Bryan into ADR, knocking him through the ropes. While Sheamus was distracted by ADR and Rich Rod trying to regain their composure, Bryan snuck up to the top rope. He leapt into a Brogue kick and Sheamus covered him for the victory.

This concluded the Smackdown taping.

That Sandow stuff sounds Amazing HAHAHAHAHA

I hope that some of these fresh heels on SmackDown! (Antonio Cesaro and Damien Sandow, mainly) don't get lost in the shuffle because the WWE tries to shove too many viruses through the door (the old "Three Stooges syndrome"). But SmackDown! does sound pretty amazing this week.

Keith, Ryan Clark is the guy who is the "reporter" who gets the info for that page but he has been known to be less then stellar in his reports.

I look at Cesaro and Sandow debuting at the same time sort of like when MVP and Kennedy got going at the same time. I think the idea is that hopefully at least one sticks.

They did the same thing a few years back with a few peeps, Eric Escobar as one of them, and none of them got over...

Was a decent show in person. Orton got the loudest pop of the night imo the first time he came out.

Shaemus brogue kicking Bryan would have looked better if he didn't almost miss Bryan's head entirely...but at least they have 30 cameras to cover it up.

I thought the Yes chant started by Shaemus at the start of the show was hilarious.

That whole night sounds like a clusterfuck.

Like yea, there's shit I wanna see but everything felt like it was executed very poorly.

One match done twice, a lie about the main event, the same AJ segment as last week, but most importantly, the way they're dealing with Bryan.

They basically hand Bryan the WWE title match at OTL, then Sheamus hands him his ass the very next night. Sure, it's supposed to make Sheamus look good as WHC, but the new number 1 contender to the top title shouldn't be losing the next night to the WHC. Doesn't matter if it's the same person he lost the title and rematches to consecutively.

I dunno. I'm just nitpickin' now

Just watching now.

Show opens with stills from Raw but no audio, eventually Cole's voice comes through. How does that happen on a show that benefits from post-production!? Sloppy.

I like how they've segued from Sheamus v Bryan to Sheamus v Del Rio by focusing on the injured shoulder. Very nice. Also, Ricardo's flying cross body was beautiful.

Pretty good Tag Match between R-Boom and Hunico/Camacho as Epico, Primo, Rosa and A-Dub look on from the stage. Kinda feel like the heels should have won here with a distraction from the former champs. I love the idea of a three way fued over the tag straps. Imagine how much fun a Truth/Kofi v Hunico/Camacho v Primo/Epico Threeway Tag Match would be. Are they putting a concerted effort into building the Tag Division or am I just kidding myself?

Swagger v Brodus. Seems the "troubles" between Swagger/Ziggler continue despite Funkasaurus beating the better of the afforementioned heels in a PPV match. Swagger gets counted out. Meh.

Promo for a Raw Recap. Yawn.

Damien Sandow debut coming up. Love the entrance theme and the announcement of him as "The self-proclaimed Intellectual Savior of the Masses". Not overly keen on a debut match against Derrick Bateman, was hoping Sandow would go straight into a fued with someone.

Oh wait, Sandow now saying that he won't face the "simple-minded ignoramus". Brilliant.

Bateman wants a match though. My guess: Queue RyBerg.

XL
05-04-2012, 08:00 AM
And here he comes, complete with pyro. Won't be too long til he gets the smoke.

COME ON BATEMAN!!!

XL
05-04-2012, 08:04 AM
Oh well. Talk about 5 Moves Of Doom... RyBerg wins.

Show/Orton v Kane/Cody, thought these guys were done with each other. Ideally this leads into an all out Cody v Orton fued. The stuff they did prior to Orton being shifted into a fued with Barrett was the goods. Ideally you have Randy actually chase the IC Title and it *might* give the belt a bit more prestige. Let's see what happens here.

Damien Sandow was fantastic. He held the microphone like it was a wine glass.

Mr. Nerfect

I would honestly not complain if Damien Sandow never competed against a proper WWE Superstar for like three years, and instead just beat jobbers every week as some sort of brilliantly negotiated contract. Give him the biggest winning streak in professional wrestling history and have him remind everybody each week.

Also, not that this needs to be said, but Daniel Bryan is ridiculously good. You can say that people don't want to see him all you want, Gertner, but I'm strictly talking about his ability. It is unbelievable how well he plays his role. From the smirk on his face when Sheamus hurt himself on the shoulder block, to him getting pissed off with Del Rio for interfering, to him telling Eve not to let Sheamus take "the coward's way out," to just how fucking vicious he looks when he's controlling a body part -- the man is glorious as a performer in the ring, and at playing his character. He made Sheamus look absolutely fantastic this week. I actually hope that Bryan beats CM Punk at Over the Limit, and we get some Champion vs. Champion matches between Sheamus and Bryan where Bryan gets some wins back.

The second batch is the one I'm referring to. I think the WWE was trying to introduce Eric Escobar, Drew McIntyre and Tyler Reks as major heels all at the same time.

Swagger and Ziggler need to switch pushes with Darren "Took that day off" Young and Tinus O'Nellie though.

Mr. Nerfect
05-04-2012, 06:58 PM
Bryan's work was seriously fucking good. To show that I can criticise the man, I felt that on RAW he played up "YES!" too much, instead of just letting it happen; but on SmackDown! this week the guy was perfect. As I said, he's scarily good in the ring. No one should be that great a story-teller in there. But he's also a great character. Him getting pissed off at Del Rio getting involved in his match before slapping The "Yes!" Lock on Sheamus was almost sort of honourable and intriguing before it just because heelish. Fantastic.

Mr. Nerfect
05-04-2012, 06:59 PM
Swagger and Ziggler need to switch pushes with Darren "Took that day off" Young and Tinus O'Nellie though.

I think it should have been Young & O'Neil that put over Kingston & Truth on SmackDown! this week. Granted, the match would not have been as good; but it would have made sense given that Young & O'Neil have been constant features of the show.

Ultra Mantis

I dont think they should run the risk of having their tag team champions seriously injured by putting them in the same building as Young & O'Noill.

Are we thinking that "Mr No Days Off" and "The Big Deal" Titus O'Neill are in the doghouse following that awful finish the week before?

We almost had a Tag Division 4 teams deep.

I doubt they're in the doghouse at all. Management seems to have a boner for Titus O'Neil, and Darren Young is a solid in-ring hand, if nothing at all spectacular. I think it's more a case of Hunico being able to make guys look good. And they did work a fantastic little tag bout.

The problem is that good tag teams should be the ones getting a push in the first place.
