Haven't seen a thread dedicated to a Ryback discussion. Just wondering what everybody's opinions of him are. The crowd seems to get behind him, and he does have that powerful attacking style, like Goldberg had. Also, the fact that he is on Smackdown and not Raw gives him a better shot of being a headliner. I wouldn't mind seeing him progress into dominating actual wrestlers on the Smackdown roster rather than local jobbers, and going down the Goldberg road where he just runs through every opponent he faces. He begins to dominate the Intercontinental Championship scene, eventually winning the Title in a massacre of whoever the champion is at the time. I don't know, I'm just rambling, but I am very interested in what people's perception is of him is, so please, share ...

Bill Ryberg is getting an impressive push indeed.

They are drawing attention to him in what seems to be an attempt to make a big deal out of him rather quickly, kinda like they did with Alberto Of The River. They have the jobber cut a promo, so you kinda know what's coming. You get a couple of random superstars "scouting" his match on a weekly basis. He has fairly ominous theme music. He shouts the "WHO'S NEXT!?" like "FEED... ME... MORE!!!" which is completely marketable. He's a hoss who looks the shit. He gets the "Oh, damn!" reactions from the crowd for his hard hits in high impact moves like that Rybackpack (or whatever they're going to call that) and his always impressive Murder By Lariat. They likely will start him up the championship food chain by going from local indy jobbers to the Superstars/NXT rosters until they decide to stick him in a belt program somewhere.

One thing about this push is that he's "face by default"... he hasn't really done anything to be face or heel this time around, and a couple of the jobbers tried to generate a some cheap heat by bashing the town they're in... but he, as a character, he's a blank slate right now that could go either way should they need him to.

Things look like they could be good for ol' Skip Sheffield there, but we shall see. Anything could happen. It looks like potential gold... so far.

But Ryback, I like.

I like him enough. He looks like a monster and he has intensity through the roof. I think they should just embrace the comparisons to Goldberg and have him go on a monster winning streak.

Still, I was a bit more entertained with Goldberg, if for no other reason than the fact that it was more out of nowhere. I remember actually seeing the debut vs. Hugh Morrus. Instantly thought Billy G was going to job. Yeah, he "looked intense" and impressive, but how many generic jobbers went through WCW on a regular basis and laid down for The Cat or Glacier. Personally, would have liked to see Goldberg do that backflip like in that match more often, even though it would have made absolutely no character sense to do so.

With that said, it's close enough of a character (and, enough time has gone by) that they may have him go for Goldberg's streak. He's already got one up on Bill in that he's going through absolute nobodies instead of padding the resume with Norman Smiley or Jerry Flynn multiple times. Of course, to actually achieve this, he would have to appear on more than Smackdown. I mean, at one point, Goldberg was up to like 3 squashes a week from Nitro, Thunder, and WorldWide. Skip would have to do all four shows to get his numbers up.

He's so big, he looks like he might have trouble reaching behind to wipe his ass. Kind of ruins it for me. Everytime he does some awesome move, I just think how smelly he must be, and feel bad for the guy having to work with him.

Agreed. That's why Ryback should stay on SmackDown! so that post-production engineers can modify his face and voice (or at least dub over his interviews with someone who can sound gruff yet comprehensible). He can move to Raw after he finishes Toastmasters and maybe gets plastic surgery.

I'm liking Ryback at the moment.

I'm just not too keen on people associating him with Goldberg, just because he's a dominant bald man. The same can be said with people comparing Mason Ryan to Batista. Just because he has a physique that's similar to Batista's and he wears trunks. (For the record, I still think he looks absolutely nothing like Batista)

It just seems like these days, nobody can be original. The fans always need to associate some sort of "similarity" to a current wrestler with one from the past. :-\

Anyway, I digress. Ryback is fantastic at the moment and (SmackDown Spoiler) I like how they're slowly introducing him to actual competition on SmackDown, beginning with his match against Derrick Bateman. Also, the majority of what he says can be marketable. Such as "FEED....ME....MORE" and what he said on SmackDown this week, which is so far, my favourite of everything he's said, "FEED THE MACHINE".

I can see "FEED THE MACHINE" appearing on T-Shirts in the future.

So the only way is up for Ryback right now, and I look forward to see what happens with him down the line. :y:

I'm not on the RyBerg bandwagon just yet.

Yes, he's got an impressive physique. Yes, he has a great level of intensity. Yes, some of his moves look utterly brutal (and that lariat more than likely is).

Currently though, there's nothing for me to be interested in. He does look like Goldberg so the comparisons will happen, the fact that they're building him as an "unstoppable wrecking machine" and having him squash jobbers in 5 moves will only encourage that comparison.

I'd hate for him to mow through the IC Champ as suggested in the opening post and it'll be interesting to see what happens when he eventually "meets his match"/loses. Will that kill his momentum?

At present, I'm infinitely more interested in Damien Sandow's character than I am in RyBerg's.

I like Ryback!! I am glad that a guy that has been trying to get a decent spot (aside from the Nexus angle) is getting time to build up into his own man. Remember, he's been around since Tough Enough 4. I hope to see him elevate more in the upcoming weeks. He is a powerhouse, but has good agility as well. The backpack stunner is awesome. I look forward to his squash matches every week. I guess he'd be at 6-0 with his current gimmick on tv, maybe 5-0, but he beat two guys at Extreme Rules.

Haven't seen enough of him to make an informed opinion, tbh. I like what I have seen so far except I think they should have been feeding him more recognizable people instead of unknown jobbers.

As long as they don't rush him to the title scene like they did with Brock back in the day, it should turn out OK. But they do need to go ahead and throw a few of the weaker low/mid-carders his way. And stop having people who he will obviously destroy scouting him from the back and laughing; I just don't get that part of his debut at all. Makes it look like the pushovers think he is a wuss when he is clearly going to destroy them.

In the middle right now.

I like how they give the jobbers some mic time which is rare before Ryback destroys them. Also love the clothesline he uses and reminds me a lot of Bradshaw's where it really looks legitimately painful when he hits someone with it.

He's basically just another Goldberg at the moment and the crowd realizes it too so he needs a small tweak in his gimmick to disassociate with the chants. In terms of squashes, Clay's have been more entertaining with the crowd loving his more than Ryback's or Lord Tensai.

A lot of Ryback's moveset is gold:

* Murder by Lariat
* Over the Shoulder Boulder Holder
* Meat Grinder (what I call his Fisherman Buster-like move)

He also used to do a Jackhammer early in his career. I'd actually mark out a little bit if he busted it out one week in response to the Goldberg chants.

I'm just not too keen on people associating him with Goldberg, just because he's a dominant bald man.

Because he's a dominant bald man who looks intimidating and powers through jobbers with such simililarity that Smackdown is clumsily dubbing out the GOLDBERG chants. He does have a similar build and look and now gimmick... close enough to warrant the chants.

To be fair, he looks LESS like Bats now with hair, but on his debut, even in street clothes... actually, ESPECIALLY in street clothes, his look and build was close enough to fool a lot of people on first glance (which was also aided by the fact there was rampant speculation he was about to return at that time).

It's not that we're particularly bashing Skip by saying "Goldberg did it first!!" Hell, this ride is quite enjoyable, but still the similarities are definitely present.

It would be like if they gave Darren Young a gimmick where he wears a combination lock and chain around his neck and wears jorts in his matches, and more importantly added a spot to his moveset where he makes a superman comeback with 5 moves of doom at the end.

Also, remember all the flack Goldberg got initally for basically being thought of as WCW's answer to Stone Cold... a bad-ass bald guy with a goatee and plain black ring attire.

I remember the Austin/Goldberg comparisons back in the day, and knowing WCW, I wouldn't be surprised if the Goldberg character was all intentional, just to compete with the WWF and Austin at the time.

XL

Difference is, whilst Goldberg looked like Austin they did something totally different with his character and his style was different. Ryback looks like Big Bill and has seemingly been given the same gimmick with similar moves. It's pretty easy to see where the comparison comes from.

At a RAW house show, Dolph Ziggler brought out Mason Ryan as an "extra insurance policy" for a match against John Cena, in which Ryan did play the heel enforcer role (and didn't turn on Ziggler or anything).

Personally, I hope that makes it to TV. Ryan is not ready to be on his own as a babyface. As a heel back-up for someone, he's perfect.
