View Full Version : Fellow Parents: What are your kids playing?

So, as a pretty careless parent I allowed my son to play Left 4 Dead before he had a functional grasp on what exactly the relationship between the controller and the weird TV show were. Eventually that turned into him hogging the Xbox and eventually discovering Versus and the joys of being a monster.
He eventually got bored with the basic game and pretty much just likes exploring the levels until he dies. Although, that should be past-tense as now he refuses to playing anything except Brutal Legend. I turned the Gore on and turned off the curse words just because he repeated everything the survivors said in L4D and L4D2 and would often say them at random times. My son curses like an old Vietnam veteran at times, but I'm okay with that.
Other games my son plays: Xmen Arcade, Simpsons Arcade and he sat with me through Monkey Island and made suggestions.
I just want to know if I'm the only one not worried about first-person-shooters turning my kids into serial killers and if any of you video-game forum perusers have kids in the first place. Show some love.

First time I played Doom, I was 9 or 10. Haven't murdered the fuck out of any crowds with a chaiinsaw or shotgun yet.

You seem like a parent who takes interest in your childs life and are there to guide them on right from wrong and listen when they have a problem.
You have no reason to believe video games will cause your son to turn into a killer.

It's def not the games/tv it's the parenting..
Don't let him play Leisure Suit Larry or anything but a game like Left 4 Dead will only help prepare him for the oncoming zombie apocalypse..
Good parenting IMO..

If I have kid I will probably only give him games that I like and have deemed "good"

My son is 2, so he really can't play too much. He knows that the controller does stuff, but he doesn't know exactly how to do everything. He can pick movies and stuff on Netflix though. Gamewise, I got him that Sesame Street game for Kinect. He seems to like it. He likes watching me play Mortal Kombat. Any time he sees the MK Dragon, he freaks out and says "Fight!"
He's also a fan of WWE '12, Skyrim, and Dead Island.

Tell the truth Dtts, was this thread just a way to start a video game violence discussion? That's what it feels like to me.

Nope. I'm using my kids as an experiment and letting television and video-games teach them their life lessons.

No, I just want to know who has kids and if my level of tolerance for video-games that my kid plays is unusual.

It's threads like this that make you realise we're all getting old. :(

It all depends on the kid, as long as its put in a context they understand and realise its just a game then i wouldn't be concerned about raising Dexter. Most of us turned out okay.

My son likes Just Cause 2, Fortress Craft (Minecraft clone on 360. I hear they may be sued by the makers of Minecraft.), Minecraft 360(The actual Minecraft game released on 360), Forza Motorsport 4, Call Of Duty: Black Ops.
He's 10.

Every once in a while my son switches from L4D to L4D2, seems to like 'em both just fine.
Though his obsession with Brutal Legend right now is pretty extreme. Everytime he wants to ride a laser panther or summon his car I have to do it for him.
There are also a bunch of spots in the world where you can get stuck and have to load the check-point.

I have a 12 year old brother who is more or less young enough to be my son. He harrassed me a lot last year until we made the move to 360 where he could party with more people his age. He would spend his time in those days quickscoping in MW2, then I saw him playing Fifa for about 6 months, and now he's on Minecraft. The only contact I get from him now are forwards where he thinks he's going to get free credit.

Mine now plays Fruit Ninja Kinect.
He also attempts to play Batman on NES....it's entertaining...he doesn't get far. Haha.

Well im not a parent yet, thats in about a month.
The way it see it, i'm not going to let him play games like Grand Theft Auto until he is old enough to not practice it.
Games like Halo, Left 4 Dead though...thats fair game. If my kid cant distinguish monsters, aliens, and zombies on TV from his peers, then theres something wrong with him mentally, not the game or the decision to play.

Start by placing your controller against your woman's pregnant belly.
