View Full Version : Should spoiler tags be encouraged/required for embedded YouTube videos?

Greetings.

First off, just wanted to let you know that Triple A appointed me as mod for this forum a few weeks back. If you have any requests or questions, please PM me! My door is always open! :)

Now to the first order of business. Recently, I've been avoiding a lot of threads in this forum because they take ages to load and slow everything on my computer down. The main culprit, especially in the 100,000 replies thread, is the number of embedded youtube videos.

I've found that hiding them in spoiler tags solves this issue, or at least helps substantially.

Now, I realize that having an embedded video helps draw attention to it, especially if it has a snazzy graphic to go with it. So maybe if it's an especially relevant song or one that you think deserves a lot of attention, a regular embed would be fine. For example, in my music discussion thread on the White Stripes, the unhidden videos in the main body of text were directly relevant to what I was trying to say and I wanted people to listen to them; hence leaving them unhidden. The rest of the videos, however, were just favorites of mine, so I placed them in spoiler tags.

Essentially, if it's just something relevant to a discussion you're having with another member, embedding it in a spoiler tag might be the best option. But if it's a real point of emphasis that you want people to take notice of, leaving it in the open seems fine as long as its done with restraint.

I think we should all adopt the habit of hiding these videos whenever we can; just list the artist and title above the tag.

HOWEVER, this forum belongs to the people and I will declare no such mandate without your proper input.

Cheers, and have a wonderful day everybody! :-)

I kept this a private poll, but if you voted no I'd love to hear from you and get some more input.

I have pretty terrible internet service and I haven't encountered a really bad problem with load times, so I voted no.

Do you have a really nice PC? Cause I have a nice/new MacBook Pro and a 20mb/s broadband connection and it really bogs everything down, even if Chrome is my only program running.

Good lord really? Nah I've got an average desktop PC thats about 4 years old, maybe older. AT&T suckfest internet that gets about 2 mb down and .4 mb up.

It's only partly because Chrome is kinda shit, but yeah, it can be hard on your memory when a thread has 15 youtube videos waiting to load.

Putting them in spoiler tags is the courteous thing to do, but mandating it is going to make St. Jimmy post meme pictures and Shisen Kopf call you a faggot spic. Gonna vote "Ya pretty much"

I don't think mandating it is the right way either, but maybe we could all get into that habit for the sake of a clean, fast and streamlined music forum multimedia experience

From this point forward I'll try to be more cognizant of it when posting videos.

That shouldn't be happening. Dunno, maybe cause it's a mac but idk, shouldn't be any reason for a new computer and a fast internet connection to have these problems.

But to answer the poll, no. Get a better computer. :p Or fix your current one.

I have used Chrome for a long time now and it is fantastic so idk what your problem is. Guessing something to do with how Macs load shit.

When I'm hooked up to my network at home, my phone doesn't even have issues with the 100k thread or stuff like this, so a further 'idk'.

I vote yay

Yeah I dunno, tried FireFox and it was the same deal. Just having the summer song thread open in the background was destroying my computer.

Same deal with my brother's computer.

Thanks for all of your collective takes. Might make side by side sample threads to see.

I voted Yes because I have the same problem

I would say maybe just in threads where you know it's gonna be video heavy (IE ABT's hip hop playlist). Mandatory to me connotes some kind of punishment if the rules aren't followed, and I dunno if it needs to go that far. Should just be "the courteous thing to do".

We have done this sort of thing in the cfedding galleries for a bit now. Works incredibly well since it doesn't take forever to open a page now.
