View Full Version : Was there a reason why there was "Raw is war" and "Warzone"?

I always found it strange how Raw around 1998 had the first hour as Raw is War, but the second hour as the War Zone. Why the difference? Was it to make it like 2 separate shows in the one screening?

The themes were so damn good though:
1st Hour:

2nd Hour:

I'm fairly certain it was because of the 10pm cutoff. I can remember as recently as 2005-6 Dish Network had it listed as Raw and RawZone.

I heard before the reason was is the 10-11 Hour was edgier as opposed to the 9-10 hour that way they could really have 1 show with 2 different ratings

Exactly that. After the "kids went to bed," the show became a warzone.

Warzone was supposed to be "edgier" as Loopydate indicated.

I always consider that to be a great concept. They should've kept that for RAW.

Maybe they'll bring it back with the supposed permanant 3 hour slot...

Makes it different for the ratings system too I think. Like the top shows of the day. If they are separate you get two spots in the top lists instead of one.

What is really did was confound my VHS recorder back in the day plus my DVR before they stopped separating it.

How the hell did it confound your VCR? Did you have a fancy one directly from a cable provider or something?

I just had to put in a chunk of time and the station (2h15 for RAW and the usual overrun, and about 3h05 for the overnight rerun of Nitro). Well, that is AFTER I ran the cable directly into said VCR instead of the cable box... otherwise, it would record nothing but white noise/blue for 5+ hours.

I always consider that to be a great concept. They should've kept that for RAW.

Pretty sure they ended it out of "sensitivity to the members of the armed forces who were actually out fighting real wars" or somesuch.

wasn't it changed before the wars though? i think i remember some controversy after the columbine shootings about the "is war" part promoting violence

straight from wikipedia: The RAW IS WAR logo and name were retired in September 2001, following the September 11 attacks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/September_11_attacks) and sensitivity over the word war, and because the Monday Night Wars were "over".

I always figured that it was due to old-school ratings systems, and with hourly ratings it made sense at that time to call the shows two different things, and that when quarterly hours came out, it made sense to scrap the concept of two separate hours being listed.
