Were German/Nazi gimmicks the first successful "evil foreigner" gimmick?

This is really sad. This guy is like a hero to German people, and is a wrestling legend over here. A lot of the newspapers have covered it and a lot of people are truly saddened by this.
Nah, just kidding. No one's ever heard of this guy except DLVH.

The Nazi Germans were the very first evil foreigner gimmick, long before the Japanese and Russians.

I always thought evil Mexicans would have been a hot heel gimmick back during TR's run as the anti-hero babyface.

They didn't do that until the late 1990s with The Hart Foundation.
