I'm always getting a message saying that I have High CPU usage with either explorer or chrome.

I'm guessing the obvious answer would be that my ye olde Pentium D processor is the case, but I wouldn't have thought it would cause this simply from browsing???

It will be. The internet is getting more complicated. These old AMD Athlons at work struggle with most websites.

What do you mean 'Getting a message'? Sounds like you've caught something.

Download and run Microsoft Security Essentials, which is a free and very good antivirus, as a start.

Might I ask why you are using Explorer? If it is a work computer then I understand but otherwise look for another browser.

I should actually read posts before I reply

I get the same message when running Chrome. But then I also have an AMD 64 Athlon something. Fuck knows.

I'm very open about my lack of computer knowledge.

Just found out it's Norton security popping that message up. From reading around, half the time it's not even true.

Uninstall all Norton products immediatley. Seriously, it will be like exorcising a demon from your PC. Norton is the worst "legit" software ever made and it may have actually been coded by the devil himself.

Uninstall. Uninstall. Uninstall.

I try to keep the bare minimum on my PC, usually just sticking to IE. Downloaded Chrome to see whether I have the same CPU problem and will probably keep it.

I miss Netscape Navigator :(

Yup - its Norton giving me that message.

Why is Norton so bad out of curiosity?

It is horrible bloatware. It will be the thing strangling your CPU and then has the audacity to flag up that it's eaten all your CPU cycles. On top of that, it does fuck all more than the Windows firewall does (Vista/7) apart from "keep you safe" by using a database that users flag sites into.

As long as morons don't use your system and click links in emails, get rid. If you have morons using your PC, get rid of them first, then get rid. I won't tell the authorities if you got rid of them in a questionable way, but it needs to happen. Buy then a 1st gen iPad or something if you're a pacifist and they're not ready for a real PC.

I assume it's Norton Security since that's what was flagged up on the searches, but if it's ant-virus, get rid and get Microsoft Security Essentials for anti-virus.

Just me on the PC. Thanks for the info - was actually considering renewing my membership for it (it was a free copy given to me) but will give the system a try without it.

I'm late on this, but Hasney is right. I just want to join with my hatred of Norton. Or McAfee.

I have used Avaast, AVG and Microsoft Security Essentials on different computers. All free, all good choices.

I've used AVG and wasn't that impressed with it. I might give Microsoft Security a crack then, was always a bit unsure about using it.

Can someone explain to my why Norton is so hated though? It seems to be the Number 1 selling Anti Virus program in Australia.

Norton is just a horrible piece of Software. They might have had their shine back in the day, but that may have been because the choices were very slim. Dump it and get Avast or Microsoft Essentials. I use Avast exclusively and don't have Essentials, but I hear it's excellent.
