Chris Benoit vs. William Regal at No Mercy 2006. Oh my fucking god!

That one headbutt that busts Regal open. No wonder Benoit did what he did.

I've always been a fan of Regal. True, he has had his slip in the past, but overall I consider him a solid and entertaining competitor. I really think WWE overlooks him far too often, continuing to implement him as gag relief rather than a viable contender to a major title (perhaps not a world title, but IC at the very least).
I really enjoyed this match too, as solid back and fourths are hard to come by these days (I think the closest I've seen are the Punk/Daniels matches).

The storyline behind this match is fucking hilarious. King Booker has to defend the World title in a 4-way involving Regal's friend Finlay later that night. He tells Regal to convince him to side with Booker and Regal says he won't let him down. Which led to
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/FJ9Ol1CfXLs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
And then he showers off and is disgusted by Vito's dong, runs off with only his towel on down the hallway and Teddy Long finds him and says it's unacceptable for him to be running around the hallway in the nude. Couldn't find that video. Shit's great though.

I remember watching it live, what a match. I bought the DVD shortly after so I could always have a copy of it. Smackdown PPV's in 2005-06 were brilliant.

You're kidding right? He was incredible. His in-ring skills were better than anyone ever, IMO. Better than HBK, Bret Hart, Angle, etc.

No lie. I just watched this for the first time last night. I'm trying to plug up some holes in my collection and this PPV was one of them that I got. Thought it was okay overall and this match was pretty decent.
it's pretty good but that's about it, doesn't need it's own thread though or we could start filling 10-15 pages worth of threads with matches that are on par and better just off the top of our heads

We can't talk about matches from the past we thought were awesome and are worth talking about?

Mainly in 2006, they'd always have at least one awesome match per show

of course we can but I've seen better matches than that in the last 24 hours and I'm not about to make a thread about them. Be better off sticking them in 100,001 replies or something, for the most part people just won't watch them. As ABT said in another thread, 15 minutes is like 6 hours in "internet time"

I feel like I've already gotten more replies on the topic that I posted this thread about than I would have had I posted this in the 100,001 replies thread.

I'm with Gertner here, regardless of if he is just "trolling" or not. Benoit used to completely bore me in his matches. Chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, chop, suplex, suplex, suplex, chop, chop, chop, headbutt, chop, chop, crossface. Add his predictability to the fact that he had absolutely zero character and I just never really got into him.

2005 just stuck out for me too mainly because they did Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio like 6 times in a row on PPV or something stupid and it never got old.

It's Benoit's intensity and aggression that drew me in for his matches mainly. They were just brutal. Guys like Benoit, Angle and Regal would never disappoint in that department. Weren't afraid to put a shift in and make it feel as physical as possible for the fans.

Chris Benoit's shtick was that he was a wrestler that wrestled really good. And it worked. That doesn't work with too many people. It's a shame that Benoit went off the deep end, because I was really looking forward to seeing what he could accomplish with CM Punk in ECW.
William Regal is without a doubt one of the most entertaining all-round entertainers currently signed to the WWE. My favourite thing about hearing about Daniel Bryan and AJ apparently getting married is the possibility that William Regal could be the best man. He seems like the kind of guy who will be involved with them for life, in some sort of trainer capacity, at the very least, but I do wish to see him get in the ring a couple more times. Plus, he's a damn good commentator. So yeah, basically, I think the WWE needs a lot more Regal on many different levels.

Some people on this board have a really narrow idea of character or charisma. Benoit had both, just because he wasn't Hulk Hogan doesn't mean he was lacking in those things.

LOL describing Chris Benoit as charismatic is like describing a quadriplegic as athletic. Benoit was one my favorite wrestlers when he was alive, but he couldn't talk to save his life. There are worse, of course, and he was basic at best but he did have that Dean Malenko/Dynamite Kid energy that brought the crowd in during a bad ass match, like the one above.
I Miss Benoit a lot. Benoit and Daniel Bryan would probably have the best match ever... no doubt.

You can have charisma without mic skills. I'd say that some of times a wrestler really has to have charisma is when they're not saying a word.

Yeah, we've had this debate before. Charisma isn't necessarily mic skills, but charisma certainly helps in developing mic skills.

Definition of CHARISMA
1
: a personal magic of leadership arousing special popular loyalty or enthusiasm for a public figure (as a political leader)
2
: a special magnetic charm (http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/charm) or appeal <the <i="">charisma of a popular actor>
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/charisma
Benoit had oodles of charisma, but just wasn't a natural talker and never did enough promos to develop his skills to a high level. He had an intensity and aura about him that made you want to watch him wrestle. Charisma is the intangibles a person has draws others toward them. If all it took to get over and become a star in wrestling was being a badass wrestler, then Lance Storm would have been just as successful as Chris Jericho and Benoit. He wasn't because he didn't have as much charisma as those two. For example, most people would say Scotty Too Hotty was charismatic. Did he ever say a fucking word after "Too Much" became "Too Cool"? Fuck no, but he had something that made people interested in him.

For those talking about Regal being under-used, let's not forget about the monster push he was getting as the Raw GM before his second wellness policy violation. He also won King of the Ring. It's not for a lack of trying on WWE's part.

If Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton can come right back into the mix like nothing happened I don't see why William Regal couldn't do the same, he kissed McMahon's ass on television for Christ's sake.
I miss suplexes in wrestling.

There's a pecking order, whether we agree with it or not. Regal had to have known how he was regarded, and he probably should have taken his chance a bit more seriously.

Oh, that's absolutely true. Regal was about to become WWE Champion, I am fairly certain of it. He had been moved to RAW and pushed under Triple H's wishes, and Trips was the current babyface WWE Champion. It was just calling for Regal to abuse his power and steal the title in a rigged match.
CM Punk, who was Mr. Money in the Bank at the time, was also a babyface and once a student of Regal's. So there would have been this connection between Triple H and Regal when Regal stole the WWE Title, and there would have been a connection between Regal and Punk when Punk would "save" the title from Regal's tyrannical grip.
Would Regal have gotten more than that one title run? I'm not sure. He'd have two more strikes left and would still be one of the more dependable and entertaining performers on the roster, so it's entirely possible.

Seeing the Big Gold Belt around Regal's waist* would give me a massive erection. It would look so natural there.

I'm gonna throw my name in the "Never gave a fuck about Benoit" ring.
He was great putting on awesome matches on the midcard. I think your world champion should be someone who you can put out there on PR appearances and can single-handedly make the business look good via their personality.
I cared about the outcome of very few Benoit matches because his character was just not one I could get behind. I didn't care if he won because he had no personality. Maybe in a different age, I could have accepted him as a World champion but as it was, he basically ruined WrestleMania XX for me.

Is that through the eyes of 2007 or was that how you felt in 2004? I remember jumping out of my seat and being fucking full of JOY for the next 24 hours because of Benoit winning the title and the emotional journey he took to finally being "the man". I think your idea of what a World Champion should be is a little off. Those things certainly are important factors, but I think in the modern age of wrestling and media that your World Champion has to necessarily be your PR charisma machine.
Edit: To clarify, I'm not saying you are full of shit, but I can't remember anyone saying Benoit ruined WrestleMania XX other than they can't watch it without thinking about the Benoit tragedy and Eddie dying.

"Ruined" may have been a strong word. But no, my feelings aren't just in retrospect. I remember that it was a lock for months going in that Benoit was gonna win the title at WrestleMania and just thinking "I'd love for HBK to win but I know it's gonna be Benoit and it's just gonna bring the joy of title matches down."
Like I said, I always thought of him as the guy who's awesome at putting on great midcard matches but his boringness as a character made me dread him being the focal point of the company. I felt nothing at the end of that main event but how it was one of the least "big time" feeling moments I'd had at the end of a WrestleMania.

I was always a big supporter of Chris Benoits ever since he debuted in WCW in 1992 and won the NWA World Tag Team Championship tournament with fellow Canadian Bell Wiffington.
