View Full Version : I Was Somewhat Bored So I Made A Wrestling List #1

yah, might do this every now and again in the name of boredom. Or might not, dunno. After my wondrous Friday night plans fell through, I was somewhat bored so I made a wrestling list (#1). Figured I'd go with "safe territory" for this one and seeing as there hasn't been a "favourite theme" thread for a while, it'll be about entrance music and specifically songs "I am a fan of"/my favourites in a rough order (20 this time, if I do another list, it'll be a different number. Figured we'd go with a nice round one to start with)

So yeah, tell me why I have great/awful taste, why I'm right/wrong, what your top 16/5/3/1 songs are (just put them under spoiler tags so the thread doesn't make some people's computers explode), inaccuracies, disbelief at my liking of a certain song, anything about entrance themes basically. I'll probably disagree with my own selections this time next week and start remembering songs I missed and so on but hey. Enough yapping from me. Safe

20.
Shawn Michaels (Sherri version)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UjboLYSGgYs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Because I couldn't make a list of themes without including this. Once made my own HBK tights* when I was about 7 and did my own version of his entrance complete with music recorded from a VHS playing on the TV with the microphone of this pissy little "boombox" I owned pressed against the speaker. That and the song is so heel.

* these but reversed (red with white patches) http://theemptyarena.files.wordpress.com/2011/02/8.jpg

19.
Hardy Boyz
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YV1t8jwiD9w" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Worrying trend developing already, would use this when I was a little backyard idiot thinking I was Jeff Hardy (only with the agility of Matt) when I was about 14/15. Remember seeing them in flowery tights on Metal etc and thinking "huh, pretty cool" and then they started dressing in baggy jeans and I was like "SHITTTTT" because, y'know, I wore baggy jeans. It was 1999 and Limp Bizkit were cutting edge in my mind. Shut up.

18.
CM Punk (This Fire Burns & Miseria Cantere)
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/6CayESG2oWw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Ua5B8yeCrvc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Didn't care too much about this theme for the longest time. I mean, it was cool and everything and "worked" but that was it. Then MITB 2011 happened and Punk had that moment (well, 45 minutes of moments) that every aspiring wrestler dreams of and it's been a completely different song ever since. Added Miseria Cantere because, while I don't think it would really work on TV, I'm a huge mark for it and would personally use it as entrance music if nobody had ever heard of CM Punk. Oh well.

17.
Goldust (1995/96 version with the strings)
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/9te5RpEEhqU" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Would play through the old In Your House computer game with Goldust just to hear a 10-15 second clip of this over some highlights at the end (until I discovered you could just listen to the music in the one of the menus) Much better than the "dulled down" one he used for years afterwards.

16.
Ricky Steamboat (WCW)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_1ciTaKbiGo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

WCW Worldwide on a Saturday afternoon when I was about 7-8, usually featuring some variety of tag team main event with the likes of Steamboat, Dustin Rhodes, Shane Douglas, Barry Windham and the Dangerous Alliance. The opening bars were lodged in my head for yearsssss after.

15.
Mr. Perfect
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/MKidi88812g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Because the music is dripping in "here comes something fucking special". Pretty fitting for a guy who, most of the time, had a look on his face that said "I'm something fucking special"*. Good job given that Curt Hennig was something pretty fucking special.

Special. Not in the "that mentally disadvantaged child is special" kind of way.

14.
Owen Hart (Rocket)
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BjJMnM5iryw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Even as a heel against 2 of my childhood favourites Bret Hart and then HBK, I always secretly wanted Owen to win. Part of the reason was the fact he was so ridiculously entertaining with just about everything he did from commentary to promos to mannerisms but mostly it was because his theme music was catchy as shit and made me want to over-celebrate any minor accomplishment.

13.
Meiko Satomura
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/s5pB92eVafs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Who you say? I couldn't tell you much myself tbh but this song was used in a vignette/video package for GAEA on a wrestling channel we used to get over here geniusly named "The Wrestling Channel". Japanese cheese at it's absolute finest. Still have to restrain myself from doing the completely ridiculous "RAHRAHRAH" bit at the beginning even today.

12.
Rey Mysterio
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/RDT7GRmLaeE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Because Rey Mysterio is the fucking man. I've said it many times but he's the best in ring performer not named Shawn Michaels of the last 20 years. And this song is pretty much perfect in terms of modern wrestling themes, in terms of fitting Rey and in terms of making kiddies hover about 12 inches off the floor whenever it hits. Outstanding.

11. Jerry "The King" Lawler
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/wAJhsJkt310" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Dunno, there's just something about that grand "crescendo" bit that kicks in around 45 seconds that almost makes me go cold. Professional wrestling is all about tapping into primitive emotions and hearing that music play for you in front of any half decent crowd after you've just done something half decent in a match is probably a "pretty great" thing to experience.

10.
Ultimate Warrior
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/riPIhzbz498" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Because it makes you want to run around like a rabies infected frothy mouthed lunatic on speed. And then shake the shit out of the closest thing you can hold on to. Before taking off running again. Just amazing.

9.
nWo
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hyY_qLKHr1M" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

It's been 16 years and still nothing in professional wrestling has ever come close to being as cool as the original new World order. Nitro opens, the music hits then 137 guys in black t-shirts doing whatever they want take 3 hours to get to the ring. I still want to be revealed as the next member of the nWo when I grow up.

8.
Demolition
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/kLYWfXYNZEQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

If Rey's is the perfect modern wrestling theme, for me this is the 80's version. I still get so jacked up to this song that it's on my bastard iPod just about everyday in the gym.

7.
Evolution
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ArXWuG5qkx4" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

A single song that is almost as cool as anything else that's ever happened in pro wrestling. Throw in Flair, HHH, Orton and Big Dave and you have something quite special. If the nWo had had this song, they'd still be going today. Well that's a lie and somewhat nonsensical but still, it's great. Great enough to make you want to heel on everybody in real life just so you can play it as you leave the room.

6.
Gangrel/The Brood
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/E0q7PPu_NIg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Needs no explanation. The video says it all.

5.
Vinnie Vegas
<iframe width="420" height="315"src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/urt1RDT3Who" frameborder="0"allowfullscreen></iframe>

Before Diesel and before Big Sexy, there was Vinnie Vegas. Would see him either teaming with DDP or destroying some horrendously generic jobber on Worldwide on those aforementioned Saturday afternoons and the music alone made him cool as shit to me. Plodding? Check. Swagger? Check. Music you can be a heel to? Check. That and blowing on the dice before finishing guys with "the Snake Eyes". Might steal that blowing on the dice gimmick come to think of it.

4.
Jushin "Thunder" Liger
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/Mz2-bmQyylc" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I don't know. I just love it. Gets into your brain and never leaves no matter what. It should never in a million years be a wrestling theme (well, anywhere but Japan) but it is and it's amazing for probably all the wrong reasons. Admittedly I probably wouldn't be as fond of it if it was the theme of TatsuHeadroppo ConcussionKickeiiii but Liger's pretty fucking special so...

3.
Ravishing Rick Rude
<iframe width="420" height="315"src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/q1HJS0w2rPI" frameborder="0"allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="420" height="315"src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/3EQhq50AjQ8" frameborder="0"allowfullscreen></iframe>

So good he has 2 great themes. Have spent most of my life wanting to walk
into a room wearing a robe before loudly telling everybody that I'd like to
have all of you sweathogs keep the noise down while I take my robe off and
show everybody what a real man looks like. Not sure there's ever been a
more fitting wrestler/music "marriage" than Rude and his WWF music.

2.
Midnight Express
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/4eBmeH0MAmk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

"from the Darkside, at a total combined weight of 457 pounds, Beautiful
Bobby, Sweet Stan, the Midnighttttttt Expresssssssss!". Great team but the
reason I love it so much is that I had the above words stuck in my head for
years and years but couldn't get hold of the theme for the longest time.
Believe I even made a thread here that nobody really cared less about when
I eventually got hold of it because I popped that hard. From the undisputed
(in my eyes) golden era of tag team wrestling (1986/87-1991/92)

1.
The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/hn701jXWtkE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

The best part of one of my favourite gimmicks ever. "Soon to be relocating
to Memphis, Tennessee", the little US flags they'd wave (I still
occasionally wave my imaginary mini flag when I hear this song) the over
the top declarations of love for America topped off by the French part of
the song "revealing their true colours"/slating America. Not to mention
it's catchy as shit. Plus the Rougeaus vs. Dynamite is probably my
favourite all time "backstage story" as well. They literally just don't
make them like that anymore.

Too Cool's theme and HHH's "My Time" theme should be up there. DDP's, as well.

CSL
07-22-2012, 12:12 AM
SammyG with that "taste", actually was "listening" to that HHH theme just before doing this (in some thread here) and also almost had Too Cool's first theme on the list just because I've watched more than one Too Cool/Rikishi dance video from like 00/01 over the last week or two

Kapoutman
07-22-2012, 12:34 AM
That's a pretty good list. I love Owen's music, also Perfect's and Goldust's. I would have Bret Hart's somewhere on there because the guitar shrill at the start gave me the chills as a kid.

Sting's WCW theme when he came back as the crow felt very dark and intense also.

parkmania
07-22-2012, 01:13 AM
A few that should be up there:

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/pbr4qIIkTd0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Wrestlers KNEW they were in for a long night even before the guitar started.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bPXLsU6VfJg" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Yes, they were usually a joke team, but when that cowbell hit, a great match with psychology even through the silliness followed.

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/7AtDarCLRWQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KoD7KV0VPco" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

I'm not sure whose got the best "classical" theme: Savage, Flair, or Lawler. And yes, that leaves out Daniel Bryan.

Lock Jaw

Bret's theme would probably be my top.

One of my favorite RAW moments

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/B7DOcHRgQMo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Absolutely lost my shit when I watched this live and Bret's music hit. Even though I should have known better.

"number constraints". Could have made a list of 50 but I don't think I'd ever be that bored :-\ plus I was only going to do like 8-10 songs but I kept upping the number basically because of what Supreme said.

Considered every song mentioned in here so far except Flair and The Bushwhackers when making the list, especially the Sting Crow theme (the Starrcade 97 version with the dialogue) that Kapoutman mentioned

considered Kidman and the Blondes for mine. Love the Jericho themes as well. Would play that Kidman theme over and over again on WCW Mayhem on the PS1. And probably would have included the Blondes theme if everybody and their Nan hadn't used it as well. When I hear it now, I just think of a clearly-can't-be-arsed Marty Jannetty with no wrist bands/tape

Supreme Olajuwon

I actually couldn't remember who was the "big name" who used it before Jannetty, so I searched for it as Jannetty's theme, saw the Hollywood Blondes edition in the related videos, and used the Blondes video to get more "cred"

considered Storm's WCW theme, regretting not putting it in now actually. Beverley Brothers theme was great as well, "proper 90's theme". And shittt, wish I'd have thought of using PPV themes as well because there's a few I'd use. Definitely would have had:

best shit ever with Vince doing the voiceover announcing the Rumble participants "the mighty HERC-ules! Koko B. Ware! the Ullllllllllltimate Warrior!" and so on

and

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/M5vFgV3P3gM" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

and that from the beginning of the old VHS tapes "So if it's bodyslams, side suplexes, clotheslines, dropkicks and powerslams that you're after!"

Not as intriguing as CSL's but there you go.

That was was way tougher to do than I thought. I was taking out, putting in and re-arranging the order for about an hour.

I'd probably have Dudleyz in there (The GET UP one), Rock's Hollywood No Way Out theme (The one that has completely over the top IF YA SMELL-LA-LA-LA-LA's all the way through it and not the instrumental one) and then a bunch of ECW themes. RVD, Dreamer, Sandman, Taz and Raven at the top of that list.
