View Full Version : So...am I the only one that misses Matt Striker on commentary for RAW and PPVs?

I always thought he balanced Cole and Lawler out. You never knew if he was gonna say something "face-ish" or "heelish" and that made his character on-screen very interesting.
For example, when he once said that he feels Vickys voice is "very soothing" but was able to say it with a straight face while she was screaming incessantly at ringside....lmao. And when he said "no way, this is a markout moment, I'm markin out bro!" I loved it.
Anyone else wish we could see more Striker? Other than Superstars and the occasional backstage interview? FILL ME IN!

Miss him so much. He cared about putting the matches and wrestlers over. He actually prepared for the shows. He tripped over his words sometimes but I loved having him around.

I liked Striker. Don't know if I actually miss him, but I liked him.
I do miss JR, though.

I miss him a lot. Josh Matthews is total crap compared to Striker, I don't get the love he gets.
Striker should be the announcer on Smackdown.
Nah man he was like DVLH on commentary, bringing up stuff from 1970's NWA and shit.
I miss Heyman on commentary tho.
And Punk.

That's honestly what I like about him on commentary, he could readily go to wrestling history and seemed like he actually enjoyed the history of the business, though his commentary "character's" attitude sometimes became annoying. I don't necessarily miss him, at all really, but I can see what he added to the table.
To the second and third points, I agree, Heyman was fucking golden at the table, Punk as well.

I don't think they want someone out on commentary who is intelligent.

I can't wait to see the clever insights all of tonight's Touter's give to the show. #toutapalloozaaaa

I don't see why Michael Cole has to be on both shows now, considering he's much less of a heel now than before.... it made sense in the past to get him over super strong and super fast, but I'd rather see Striker & Mathews back together.....

I don't care for Stiker at all.
Seems like all he does is ramble incessantly while trying to fit as many nicknames for wrestlers and analogies as he can into his commentary.

King and Cole are good for what the WWE wants to do. For better or worse for us. They do what they are told and schill all the products and emotions the E wants to push. I would like to have someone else other than those two but what can you do? Striker said "Mark Out" and hes gone.

Course i miss him. He made me feel like i was watching wrestling. However there in lies the problem...

I dunno, his personality is a bit bland.
Destor's on the money here. I loved Striker's commentary. The play by play was smooth, and well-called. Hell, he added in little insights about why someone transitioned from one move to the next, and the impact it's had. His nicknames could get cheesy, but they suited his persona as a wrestling nerd / teacher to a T.
Honestly miss him.

Striker was my favorite. As far as being a historian, he's a fucking teacher. Of course he'd be into that sorta thing.

Hate Striker on commentary. It's great that he knows everything about everyone in the history of professional wrestling, but he's just too much of a nerd. He's like that annoying friend you invited over to watch wrestling that one time who doesn't shut up throughout the whole show referencing stupid bollocks you don't care about and you just want to punch in the face. People seem to think that just because you have all the knowledge it makes you instantly qualified to work on television. If that were the case we'd have some right drips on TV every week.
Besides, he had no one to blame but himself for losing the job. That fuck up at Survivor Series 2010 was pretty unforgivable. And many of his "nerdy facts" were just plain incorrect anyway. The one that sticks out for me was when he said the Intercontinental title hadn't changed hands in Texas for 25 years. It had in fact happened just a few months earlier at WRESTLEMANIA for god's sake.

He's way better than the pigshit smile wearing cocksmith of a boy-man Josh Matthews or whatever the shit they are calling that dude.
It's a shame he got shit on calling the Rumble I believe it was in 2011...for using updated terms and slang.

he should be in cole's position

He should be in Jerry Lawler's position, actually.
Lawler had a good run. It's time for him to become an agent backstage or something.

He's a pretty good commentator and liked how his style fitted well with his teaching background since it felt like you were learning about wrestling from the stuff he'd say during a match.
Regal and JR do the same now but the difference is how both feel like they are just having a casual conversation and not a teaching feeling Striker does.

Matt Striker is an amazing commentator. He cares passionately about what he is seeing, and it comes through. Sometimes he is a little much, but that is just because he is trying to do what the WWE wants their announcers to do -- tell stories and get people to invest interest. I love some of the nicknames he gives to guys, too.
This week on Superstars, I thought that Striker was especially switched on. I'm hoping that he gets another shot on SmackDown and PPV soon. Booker T should remove Michael Cole from SmackDown and give the color commentator spot to Striker to work alongside Mathews.
He and Regal are the two commentators who really add to the matches they call, in my opinion. I think that Scott Stanford can be entertaining, too, but not as a major play-by-play commentator. He reminds me more of a Jonathan Coachman style announcer.
I once heard someone say that they think that Matt Striker should have been given the storyline Michael Cole got given when he was dominating all WWE television, and come to think of it, Striker would have done an amazing job with that.
The dude tries too hard sometime, but if he got comfortable in a trusted position, then he may relax and become more natural at things. What I wouldn't give to hear Jim Ross and Matt Striker working together at some point. I suppose Striker did fuck up during the 2011 Royal Rumble, and it just so happened to coincide with Booker T's return to the company, but now that Booker is off commentary, I hope that Striker finds his way back into grace.

I'd also like to hear Road Dogg be given a shot on commentary. Let him and Josh Mathews do SmackDown's Superstars portions together while Striker works SmackDown. If Road Dogg can do a good job as a color commentator, perhaps consider adding him to the SmackDown announce team.
