Aaaaaaand here I am.

They actually announced this back at Comic Con, with a surprise teaser trailer at the end of the Pacific Rim panel, and had a brief Q&A with the director Gareth Edwards. Unfortunately I can't find the teaser anywhere, but here's the Q&A:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/ly9UeWvx1W8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

As well as a little concept art to show us what the new re-designed Godzilla looks like:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v36/kornzilla2k1/godzilla/godzilla2012.jpg

And, as far as I can tell, the only decent leaked screenshot from the teaser:

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b73/nowhereman716/newgs.jpg

So anyway, about the movie itself. Gareth Edwards did a 'serious' monster movie in 2010 called Monsters (http://youtu.be/V_-gL3U1T5Y). It's a pretty good flick, focusing more on the human drama and the social-political climate that would rise from something as insane as a giant monster invasion (not to mention it was a pretty heavy-handed metaphor for America's fearful or willingly ignorant attitude towards the drug war in Mexico). It's not something that'll blow you away, but it's good for what it is.

Now that he's taking the reins over the King of the Monsters himself, though......I'm cautiously optimistic. I mean, we've got a guy who clearly wants to make really good monster movies, and now he's being backed by a studio with a much bigger budget than he had for Monsters, which should allow him to do a lot more.

From what I've gathered, they're playing it closer to the original 1954 movie, where Godzilla is clearly the villain, an engine of nihilistic destruction and hate rather than the goofy children's hero he later became. I'm down with that, especially because it will put a much more definite distinction between this movie and Pacific Rim, which sounds like it's going to be much more about the campy monster-robot fights. If they're ever going to be able to make the monster movie function as a legitimate form of horror movie again, then hopefully this is the movie to do it.

Yeah, there's only one actual Comic-Con, and it's once a year in San Diego. There are a lot of other big cons out there (Wonder Con, Dragon*Con, NYCC, Wizard World, Gen-Con, et cetera), but the one true Comic-Con is the only one that movie studios really go for broke on.

Nowhere Man

The folks at this year's Comic-Con who went to the "Godzilla Encounter" attraction apparently were the first people to get a look at the new Godzilla. And it got leaked, so here's some footage from it:

Gotta say, I'm loving it. Even if the movie sucks, at the very least, Godzilla looks and sounds like Godzilla this time.

Nowhere Man
03-03-2014, 12:38 PM
Yeah, if Godzilla's going to fight other monsters, they need to focus on the ones already in his own franchise before even thinking about doing crossovers. There's already plenty to work with there: Rodan, Mothra, Gigan, Anguirus, maybe build up to some apocalyptic showdown with King Ghidorah in the final movie.

On the other hand, how sweet would it be if Pacific Rim's Jaeger program eventually gave birth to Mecha-Godzilla?

Kalyx triaD

It was a good movie, but its no Jurassic Park.

Jurassic Park had only 15 minutes worth of dinosaur action, but beyond those 15 minutes, the horror, fantasy and direction was compelling enough to keep you glued to your seat.

Mind you, this one's not a bad watch. The camerawork, CGI and visual detailing is top notch, and the score is hauntingly beautiful. The teases build tension and anticipation, but overall, it doesn't take you over the edge. You get a very solid opening piece, but until the monsters are seen, there's little else to care about. Save for the way the final battle ends, which is probably the coolest monster takedown i could have imagined.

Full marks for creating and bringing Godzilla back to life. The grandiosity and sheer monstrosity of the creature are spot on.

I'd watch it again, but only for the Zilla scenes.

Definitely a slow burn, and that may irk some people expecting all out monster action from the start, but I personally enjoyed the build up.

Yeah, a sequel could potentially get goofy, but I think it's worth the risk to get more of this action. As long as they keep the serious tone, it should be good.

That said any guesses for Godzilla's opponent in the sequel? Another original or a Toho classic?

If I were writing it I would introduce an 'omega predator'; something that preyed on Godzilla's kind, returning for one last good meal now that Godzilla has resurfaced. It could even be some variation of Godzilla itself, a similar shape but larger. Godzilla's gonna need a personal challenge, and the hunter of its species would be fresh and terrifying.

But that's me.

That could be stuff for the sequel.

It could've used a lot more Godzilla/Muto/MUTO action. As is, what we got was really awesome. When it remembered it was a monster movie instead of a military action drama, the movie really hit its stride. It's weakness was cutting from some kick ass monster action right back to humans doing human things. As a die-hard Godzilla fan I'm always after more of the Big G. What we got...I'm ok with. Just hope there's more.

I assume that everything that is in a movie is intentional. I liked it at first, found it amusing... But then when they just decided to say "oh yeah, they both got away" without an explanation or a scene or anything, it just feels lazy.

Yeah I would go new monster. The idea Kalayx has is pretty good.

I want to know why were they bombing Godzilla in 1954? Was it just because he was a big lizard or did he attack anything? Also why did he disappear after his 1954 appearance?

That could be stuff for the sequel.

Its cause hes a giant monster no nation on earth would want something like that alive.

Mankind has two reactions to something like Godzilla showing up. Worshiping it or killing it. Guess what option they tried to use?

And now I'd love to see the idea of people worshiping Godzilla explored. They did drop dialogue about him being a 'living god', and I loved the stadium's cheer of him taking a victory walk to the sea. It would be interesting to see "The City's Savior" respected as such.

And one would think he would be ostracized as a menace, but the movie ended with the human character who prevented a nuclear bomb going off not getting any cheers. He was just a face in the crowd. That stuck with me.

Sequel is confirmed. Gareth Edwards will be back and it's apparently going to feature Rodan, Mothra and Ghidorah.

Be still my beating heart.

No really. My doctor's tell me my heart beats too fast and it's nothing to do with my weight.

Honestly I hope they learn their lessons from last time a...huh. Just realized something. That's always been the Big G's problem. There really isn't a way to give us as much kaiju action as we crave while still telling a decent story. There has to be a way to strike a nice balance between high octane monster action and human exposition.

Agreed. You risk overkill by not having enough story. That's what I loved so much about the new one. They had us waiting to see him action, and it was fucking worth it.

Took a bit to get there mind. And the teases. Fucking hell so much teasing with the action. But when it paid off...edge of my seat.

I hope the next one gives us something like that.
