I heard they were gonna upgrade him throughout the movie as a lampoon to today's intentional weak devices in commerce. Robocop v1, v2, and such. Not so much like Stark and his armor, very much a stab at how we look at commercialized devices, particularly with Robo being a private item in a police force.

Those assholes first they apparently broke into Wayne Manor and stole the Batsuit (without having all their bones broken for it) and from what I see after they got out of Gotham they made a B-line for the SSV Normandy and lifted one of Commander Shepard's helmets.

The guys behind this reboot have brass balls.

Hollywood has failed again. Fellow children of the 80's, raise your pitchforks!!! :p

On a more serious note, that dark costume does not have any green/blue screen elements or fiducial points for motion tracking, so I do not believe that the costume in question will be enhanced by any computer generated effects.

Yeah, they're even reintroducing ED209 as a war machine for Middle Eastern conflicts, complete with overblown ads promoting the thing. The viral campaign may run with this and we'll see a lot of ads for war products from OCP.

Mind you this is from the leaked script summary and they may change, but from what was said they're going with corporate satire with a dash of military complex lamp shading. A lot of people blasted the details and I'm thinking, "Wait, these fuckers actually get it."

So far anyway.

Seriously, to those asking "What is the big deal?" after countless remakes and relaunches of movies and shows that more or less just piss all over the source material just for the sake of changing shit is the big deal. Robocop SHOULD NOT look like he's rocking a full Chinese Stealth Suit from Fallout 3/NV. Robocop SHOULD NOT look like Grey Fox and/or Raiden. Robocop should look like fucking Robocop. Updating it is fine, but making it look 100%

Robocop's uniform is iconic. It's established. And then, someone goes "let's change it up and make it look *cool* just because we can!" Yes, there's a chance it will be cgi'd in the end and that it's a placeholder, but more likely, that's the on screen end result, just sans any lighting effects like blinking leds or even the blue-tinged-silver finish... but people thought that about The Tumbler from all the Batman movies, that it were just some placeholder for a cg Batmobille, and they just left it looking like the monsterous love child of a Humvee and one of those multi-angled Rubix's cubes. Just from this one glance, it totally looks like they took a dump on the source material.

And given that, if they didn't even bother trying to make the damn suit look remotely similar to the obvious audience- those who will want to hope to see with nostalgic eyes- that usually speaks volumes about what will be bad writing/bad plot. Who cares about the audience liking it, reccommending it to their friends, or possibly seeing it repeadedly (like people did with a film like Avengers) and eventually also buying it on Blu-Ray? Opening weekend is the be-all end-all. Well, guess what? Getting the suit right is one thing that could have HELPED put butts in seats.

Not to be troll or anything but people need to calm the fuck down. Maybe it is a soulless cash in; so what? The Robocop trilogy is on DVD, rock it.

And this:

Updating it is fine, but making it look 100%.

...Makes no damn sense. You want it updated or you want a rerun? The Amazing Spider-Man I understand, but this is a long time between movies. Surely changes were going to happen.

So does the visor flip up solely for the benefit if the actor? The Coming Soon leak was of two pictures, one with the visor up.

I'm getting sick of having my posts implode and having to re-form my ideas from scratch...

This is my 3rd time writing this response. Each time, it gets less concise because once I write it, the idea is out of my head. I kind of remember the gist, but... ugh.

Firstly "but making it look 100%" was a sentence fragment. Thus, it didn't make sense. It was supposed to be more like "... but making it look 100% different from the original, established source doesn't make a whole lot of sense."

The impression is kind of like someone going:

"Hey, we're making a new "Raiders" movie... but we're casting Terry Crewes as Indy, giving him a modern set of weapons in place of his pistol and whip even though it's the 1940's, and nixing the fedora and jacket." That sounds like a decent movie (like, as "The Expendables"), as Indiana Jones however, that same visual is suddenly horrible.

It's like my theory on the debackle that was Square Pictures. One simple solution to avoiding disaster was simply not throwing "Final Fantasy" in the name of "The Spirits Within". It was a decent story, the animation was top notch, and all in all it wasn't a bad movie. However, by adding "Final Fantasy" to try to ride their success off years of making the games, they ushered in a whole slew of expectations on what exactly the movie should be instead of letting it be it's own thing. I think you shouldn't call it a Robocop movie if Robocop doesn't look like Robocop, as the idea isn't really pulled out of thin air. I mean, could you imagine the shitstorm if that same photo were supposed to be of, say, Batman?

@KK - It won't intially impact attendance, no. The idea of "blockbuster" is to recoup the budget AND make an inisane profit on the opening weekend. The problem I was referring to here is that it's like nobody looks past that. If the movie isn't that good, word gets around. You'll make a quick buck, but it'll get forgotten and you won't make nearly as much as "ZOMG, DID YOU SEE ___?! YOU NEED TO!" movies in the long run.

Hey, it might turn out to be a decent flick. I realize one pic isn't really enough to doom the entire project to failure. However, that one pic already looks to be a step in the wrong direction.

That sounds like a decent movie (like, as "The Expendables"), as Indiana Jones however, that same visual is suddenly horrible.

Except they're setting it in the future, an amorphous entity whose vision changes with time. Can't speak to the concept of the actor being changed, because I don't know any of the things this dude's been in except Dragon Tattoo, which I haven't seen. There's no evidence they're nixing the old style of weapons yet, and so on.

I think the comparison falls apart if you look at it. But the crucial point of the armour is that it was designed that way in the 80s because that's largely what future stuff looked like in the 80s. This is a different era. Visions of the future are now different. I imagine the T-800 could probably use an overhaul, too.

I'm still curious about the visor flipping up. The other leaked picture shows it up. I'm wondering if this is for the benefit of the actor, or is this really not the Robocop suit per se. But that's just speculation and I'm probably wrong.

Still.

You mean people would have stopped calling the animation "shit," nitpicking the hair movement, and caring about the plot holes if they had either thrown in Chocobos or dropped the Final Fantasy tag? I don't buy it.

I think you shouldn't call it a Robocop movie if Robocop doesn't look like Robocop, as the idea isn't really pulled out of thin air. I mean, could you imagine the shitstorm if that same photo were supposed to be of, say, Batman?

You mean if they turned Batman into a cyborg? Technically yes, but that's more Highlander 2 territory than anything we have to go with here.

But did you see all the changes when they rebooted Batman? Weren't those Nolan films just awful because of it?

@KK - It won't intially impact attendance, no. The idea of "blockbuster" is to recoup the budget AND make an inisane profit on the opening weekend. The problem I was referring to here is that it's like nobody looks past that. If the movie isn't that good, word gets around. You'll make a quick buck, but it'll get forgotten and you won't make nearly as much as "ZOMG, DID YOU SEE ___?! YOU NEED TO!" movies in the long run.

I don't think that's necessarily the case.

Again, I direct you to Nolan's Batman. Star Wars: Episodes 4-6. Indiana Jones. Spider-Man (I think Raimi is shit and so are these movies, but whatever).

The definition of Blockbuster has some variation, but the above are pretty commonly agreed upon.

Hey, it might turn out to be a decent flick. I realize one pic isn't really enough to doom the entire project to failure. However, that one pic already looks to be a step in the wrong direction.

But again, the emphasis is on "looks to be," rather than is. There's no guarantee they're killing the franchise with this based on aesthetics. Hell, if what Kalyx is saying is right, they're locking on to an even more important element of the original: a satirical take on modern society set in the future.

Looks good but PG-13 is the cancer of movies these days.

It guarantees more sales. It's just stupid though, movies should just be made for the sake of making a movie. All this marketing and planning is BS. In a time where TV shows can go further than before, in a time where things are all sexualized and slowly becoming less shocking, they try to remake movies so it's less gruesome...

I'm looking forward to watching it (KA2 and Robocop 2013) but as an art lover and on again/off again artist I would rather take an honorable loss. I mean I understand Batman, but Robocop? Freddy? Jason?

If it's successful enough to be actually remade (based on the whole nostalgia factor/established recognition deep in pop culture) and it had an R rating in the late 80's, a time were people were more uptight- there's no reason to be afraid it will bomb but hope they have the next Iron Man/Avengers on their hands and that's lame.

It's sort of like game companies bitching that their already good games aren't doing COD numbers.. so games turn into what's more popular.. ect.

Luckily, I think the strength in Robocop lies in the corporate themes, commentary, and parody - which seems in place.

The one thing I really liked about the trailer was the stated theme of "illusion of control" vs "the human element." That in and of itself could be potent social commentary if they don't continuously beat us over the head with it.

I mean, there's stating the them and there's pontificating.

So on a more general note....

While I'm not blown away by the trailer, the promotions for the first Robocop are far from good at getting across any of the humour of the flick. It looked like it was supposed to be a standard action movie.

And it wasn't alone.

They don't even touch on the hilariously awkward performance of Joel Grey in blackface.

Evil Dead 2 isn't quite so shlocky as one might think, given what it's known for:

Well, there is the eyeball bit, at least.

Slightly funny, but you probably wouldn't peg this as a coming of age story that deconstructs fairytales like a biology student dissecting frogs.

Or maybe I'm just hoping that this will actually be good. I don't know.

There's people complaining about Murphy getting messed up by a car bomb instead of the gangster execution. io9 seems really butthurt that Robo's helmet flips on, which I actually fell in love with second-1.

Must admit I wasn't blown away by it's trailer heck there are times in the early going it feels more like a high budget TV movie but I will still give it a chance it has a decent enough cast.

Neither of these things are big to me one way or another. I have trouble seeing a problem with 'em, though.

The reasons its a Robocop reboot kinda holds me back on how my true feelings could be for it. I think if it was a movie of its own franchise without the name attached then I would love it. The movie has that Dredd feel to it and I easily fell in love with that movie.

And change the thread title to Robocop for fuck sake. Tired of looking for it and missing it.

Felt like this was quite enjoyable. Had to suspend a little disbelief. Quite enjoyed Samuel L Fishburne's role. Felt like they were shitting directly on Fox News.

and I definitely loved the black suit more than that goddamn silver.

this fuckin movie kicked ass.

I hope to hell the bad reviews it received are getting to the people that made this.

Kind of cool to have a "Batman" and "Commish Gordon" in the movie and shit.
