View Full Version : Who here would/does loudly boo John Cena/chant "Cena sucks" at a live WWE event?

Apparently Cena got a standing ovation after Night of Champions last night. It seems crazy to think of how much he gets hated on heavily only to put on a show that forces the crowd to show respect for his performance (Whether it's last night, multiple times during The Rock feud, the end of the Lesnar match...) and then the next night it starts all over again.
When the vocal disdain for Cena started it was understandable. Once the guy has provided the same people who hate him so much with matches and moments that pull them in despite their previous feelings over and over, you'd think that would be enough for people to say "Fuck, as much shit as I give him, it's tough to ignore how he constantly entertains us."
So I actually thought about it. Is it possible that "Cena sucks" has become a hollow phrase? Something that people say because it makes them "part of the show" despite not really caring about what it means? The IWC should in theory make up most of the genuine Cena haters yet whenever the man is talked about it seems like no one really hates him with a passion like a typical WWE crowd would have you believe. In fact, they praise his promos, they praise his matches...
Is there anyone here who would/does really go to WWE events and be a part of the "Cena sucks" crowd and boo as loud as you can as soon as his entrance music hits? If so, do you think you'd do it meaningfully or just as a way to "have fun with it"? As many instances where Cena has gained people's respect I'm really intrigued as to the mindset behind this.

I think a lot of people do indeed join in "just because it is fun" and not because they genuinely hate Cena. Pretty much like how the people still chanted "You Suck" to Angle's theme even when he was a Face.

I haven't been to an event in ages, but I imagine I would join in on the Cena boos and "Cena Sucks". Just for the fun of it. Taking "joy" in subverting what WWE tells us we should do. Really sticking it to them! (After paying them the ticket price to attend)
Under no circumstances would I join in on a "You Can't Wrestle" chant, though.

I was actually thinking about Angle's "You suck!" after I posted this. The thing is I think Angle saw it coming though. That people had so much fun chanting "You suck" to the beat of his theme that it would continue. So when he returned as a face he said "Damn I missed hearing that" and coaxed them into chanting it, kinda taking control of the chant away from the crowd and making them play into his hands by making it a "respectful" thing as ridiculous as the notion might have been.
I don't know if there's a way Cena would be able to manipulate it like that though.

I'd boo him mostly because the majority of the time he's facing off against someone I like more.
I think the standing ovation was more from how great the match was last night than people suddenly no longer hating him even in his own home town. Punk could have won and would have received the same ovation even with his Yankees-like attire.
Cena's main issue which has been a problem for years, although more of the writers and WWE's fault, is he's pretty inconsistent when it comes to really great performances either in the ring or on the mic. For example, his promos against the Rock were some of his best ever but once that feud was over, he went back to the bland monologue style that people grew tired of.

I've joined in but it's always just for fun for me. I still find Cena rather dull 80% of the time but the guy is where he is for a reason and honestly I've enjoyed most of his stuff recently. I'd be willing to bet that most of the fans doing it are like that too.

I join in, but mostly because he's my son's favorite wrestler and he thinks whoever is facing Cena is mine. At MITB this year he was super excited when Cena won and enjoyed it more I believe knowing I was rooting for the Miz (who I knew stood no fucking chance)

Cena puts on 5 or 6 good matches per year and they are all with people who are more talented than him. I am by no means a hater and no I do not boo him but realistically I cannot say I enjoy him overall but have found myself pleasantly surprised when he works big time matches with a one up superstar.

It's a blast to take part in the chant... and even more fun to do "CENA SUCKS"
Then pop like a total mark when he wins.

Anything is better than the what chants. My favorite is the pre show woooooooos that come from all sides of the arena.

The standing ovation was definitely for how great the match was. But it happens a lot. He was booed going into the Lesnar match but at the end when he was making that comeback, the crowd was going NUTS for him. He drew them in. It's just weird that the guy can constantly perform so well people are always like "Fuck... good job, Cena!" and then as soon as it's over "YOU SUCK CENA!" Doesn't really make sense.
And people were praising Cena on the mic last Monday too. When he's involved in something/someone interesting, his promos are interesting. When he's not, they're not. Just like Punk. Just like everyone else who is capable of pulling off a great promo.

I can just as easily say "He only puts on shitty matches with people who aren't as talented as him."

I'd gladly participate in all the anti-Cena chants. He is usually feuding with someone I like more, and at its core his character still hasn't changed all that much which is why the chants started anyway. He is still the general focus of the show, but he has been in more good programs than bad ones the last couple of years. He can no doubt put on a great match with the right person/time/place, but John Cena will probably never be my favorite wrestler or someone whose merch I would buy. He just doesn't interest me as much as others.

People do it cuz they believe it's cool to hate on the big draw that goes for any form of entertainment it seems these days with that said i'd gladly chant if he's going up against someone I like more which is like about 3/4 of the time lately it seems heck there's guys on the midcard that I respect way more but as long as the kiddies buy the merch that's not gonna change any time soon.

I don't so much think he sucks, the way they portray him and the blatant refusal to heel turn him cause of the kids is what sucks. They flip flop everyone else what seems like weekly, but won't do it with him even slightly. His whole routine is just stale and it is the same shit every week with him. I think if they would switch it up a little bit and make him somewhat edgy instead of a corporate blowboy he could be a little more popular and not disliked so much.

I would not.
I would buy a "Hustle, Loyalty, & Respect" T-shirt and represent.
John Cena is awesome.

I'd probably be doing it right now at Raw.
But I hate Bridgeport. Place is a dump and too far of a drive to waste gas.

He sorta of did. When he was "fired", he asked the crowd to chant Let's Go Cena/Cena Sucks

I would not chant against Cena because although he probably understands some fans are being contrarian, I would not want to pile on. I mildly mark for Cena's "never say die" attitude because it is a timeless message.

I like John Cena. I just don't always support him.
Don't think I'd bother booing him in an arena if he's giving a good match.

First of all, I'm going to say that I don't "hate" John Cena, it's his character that I can't stand. I respect the hell out of the man for all he does for the business and charities, but I'm sick of the PG version that we've had to deal with for what seems like an eternity! I was actually a Cena fan towards the beginning but now he just seems stale.
Doctor of Thuganomics > PG Super-Cena!!!
At least he was funny back then. I guess I'm just sick of hearing what's almost the same cookie cutter promo every week on RAW! His matches have been much better in the past year but I just wish there was more variety.
I will say, it really is something when you get to be a part of the "Let's Go Cena/Cena Sucks!" chants. I was recently at RAW in Milwaukee and was completely outnumbered, as I was surrounded by kids in my section. =)

But super Cena is fighting against cancer. Ergo, you are pro-cancer.
Why do you like cancer? You sir, are worse than Hitler.

I've booed him and participated in anti-Cena chants in the past, and I would do so again in the future.
I don't boo Cena just to be part of the crowd, but he has always bored the hell out of me, and I just don't care for his character at all.
Combine that with his omnipresence throughout every facet of WWE programming, and I grew tired of him a long, long time ago.
