View Full Version : PS3 service question

Okay, so my PS3 died a while back. I think it's the PSU. I did the best I could without breaking any seals in case. Which isn't much.

Here's the thing, though. My Ps3 was pulled out of my apartment after the fire last year, and was soaked in water for a couple days before I got to it. Clearly, that didn't directly kill it, but still, God knows what the insides look like.

So, does anyone have any experience with Sony support? Is there any shot they won't catch this? Kinda doubting it. If I turn it in, will they keep the 129 dollar fee if they won't service the thing?

Also important, anyone have any experience getting a disc out of a PS3? It died with a brand new disc in it, and google results usually involve "send it in to Sony."

Are there decent third party services that might handle it if Sony won't?

Wow, they charge you even if it was a hardware failure? Christ, Microsoft didn't even do that if it red-ringed...unless it was outside their 5 year warranty thing at that time. Dunno if that's honored anymore...

But yeah, I'm not sure what their security seal tape looks like to be able to give you a definite answer. With the Xbox, it was in places that you absolutely had to break it to do anything. Even if only to paint the casing.

It's well beyond service, I'd say. They probably won't touch it. I've reflowed my old PS3 several times, and just this weekend fixed my friend's Fat BC version.

What's happening with it, are you even getting the red standby light?

If you want a disc out of it, I think it's still possible to eject even with something like a YLOD. I think yours is probably a write off so to get the disc out you should just physically open the PS3.

Yeah. Just sent mine in a few weeks ago. Overheated on me. You pretty much got a choice. Send your system back to sony for a full repair for $129. Or send it back and get a refurb for $99.

The question I have for is your data backed up on a hard drive?

Nope. This is why I'm pretty sure the power supply failed.

I've got most of my shit backed to an SD card. I emphasise most. I know the HDDs are endcoded or something douchey like that.

In terms of repair though, given my current scenario, do I even have the choice of sending it in? I'm reticent to ask Sony itself, lest I potentially tip them off to an excuse to not service it. 130 bucks for my PS3 isn't back, especially since it's an older BC model (software only, but it runs the four old games I still play) and extra ports and stuff.

Get yourself a portable hard drive and format it to fat32. Back it up, and it will save you alot of head ache. I sent my PS3 in, and it came back with EVERYTHING wiped out. I had some of my data backed up when I went and got myself a bigger hard drive.

Unless you know a guy who knows his way around a video game console or computers in general, yeah you might have to send it in. The alternative is if you got a warranty through a retailer like best buy or gamestop.

It it's a psu thing, try googling or youtubing it. Might have a chance to fix it yourself.

I wish I could help you more.

The PSU occupies the top left half of the console and is pretty massive with plenty of big holes in it. The whole bottom layer is really just a massive fan. The way the board on the PS3 is, it's sandwiched in between two metal plates. I just think if any moisture got in there, it wouldn't be coming out any time soon.

I'm far more reticent to dig in to a console than my computer. I may simply have to take the chance.

I sort of doubt it'd last this long with moisture in there.

The PS3 is a sturdy console and you can take it apart plenty of times. The toughest part is getting the first screw off, which is a Torx security screw but you can just brute force that with a normal torx or the right sort of flathead wedged in there.
