I grew up watching The Next Generation but I was simply a casual fan. The movie released in 2009 really peaked my interest and now I am watching everything that Netflix has to offer. I am slowly becoming a Trekkie. Not so much the faggot part unless that is Klingon for super awesome guy.

Well, you will become a faggot.
It's part of the conversion process.
I can take or leave most of Star Trek, but I kind of grew up on the movies, so they have a certain level of sentimental value to me.

I said in some other thread that I can't find a long time ago about who I would want to write/direct a new Star Wars trilogy. This was before the announcement obviously. I figured this would take place 15-20 years from now. I would have liked Abrams to direct, Lindelof, Orci, and Kurtzman to have a hand in the writing, and Michael Giachinno to replace the probably dead John Williams.

Makes the most sense. Former Starfleet Fleet Commander who goes nuts and now wants revenge on the system who kicked him out. He fits the tone of the poster which echoed the Batman posters. A fallen hero like Harvey Dent. Garth trying to destroy what he helped built: Starfleet and the Federation.
Gary Mitchell was already dealt with in the canon-tie in comic book to the first movie.

Even if Cumberbatch isn't Khan, that scene with Kirk and Spock putting their hands on the glass is very clearly a callback to Spock's death scene from Wrath of Khan. So it looks like they're at the very least doing some kind of parallel to it.

Or it's a swerve.
I mean, I agree that it looks very much like there will be parallels. I'm just saying that people have predicted Khan to be in this movie since before the first one came out, so maybe they're toying with us on the parallels.
Or maybe it is Khan.

It was revealed several months ago by the writers that it would be one of five classic villians that had already been used in TOS and I recall one of them was Gary Mitchell. The only thing is that he was apparently used in the IDW comic which links the 2 films and dies but not sure under what cicumstances though. That would be a good enough reason for him wanting revenge and as for that final clip it appears to be the reverse angle meaning Spock is on the outside looking in.

My favorite comment that I saw online...
"When the Enterprise is ashes... you have my permission to set phasers to kill."
I'm just hoping that the "bad guy" does not turn out to be Khan. I hope that there is absolutely nothing to do with Khan in this film. The writers and Abrams had a reletively clean slate and could have done anything they wanted for this 2nd film. It would be such a shame to "reboot" or "reimagine" Star Trek II.
From seeing this teaser trailer, I'm happy to believe that this film has nothing to do with Khan, despite some comments online of people still believing that due to dialog in the trailer that this looks like Khan.
The most fundamental piece of evidence, Cumberbatch doesn't seem like he would be an east indian dude named Khan.

They had someone new in the last one. They have already said it was a call-back character from TOS.
Him wearing a starfleet uniform could narrow it down to Garth of Izar, Gary Mitchell (Alice Eve could be Denhar, but could be just a red herring and she's Chapel), or maybe Finnegan Kirk's old nemesis/bully from the Academy days, or Finn from Court Martial episode.
I won't consider the final scene from that Japan trailer until it is seen on American screens. Probably means they cut it from the film and they screwed up.
Totally came into this thread wandering what Tb1 would think of the trailer.

The Enterprise coming out of the water happens at a different point in the movie. I saw the 10 minute IMAX preview and they were hiding the Enterprise underwater on some mission so to not break to prime directive. It's been noted on a few sites, but I'm pretty sure that's not the Enterprise that crashes into the bay. Warp nacelles are significantly smaller.

As Xcaliber pointed out, it's definitely the Enterprise that crashes. At least, it's what's shot down. I don't know about the nacelles being smaller either. They look the right size to me, though I don't have any precise nacelle-measuring technique.
I did presume the water liftoff was from the same circumstances because of the bitching that everything happens on Earth and there's no space or whatever. If that's not the case, that's not the case. But the Enterprise does appear to be going down at some point in this movie.

Remember when the monster from Cloverfield took the head off the statue of liberty and people laughed because it was like, four feet tall?
Look, the Enterprise already looks quite different depending on the viewing angle. You can argue that the Enterprise isn't the one crashing, and there's no way to defintively prove you wrong, but I am curious as to what end this would serve, considering the shots of a damaged Enterprise going down and ejecting escape pods.
Incidentally, a quick google search indicates people believe the ship rising is not the Enterprise for similar reasons, though you say yourself it is, from another point in the movie. There could be any number of reasons for inconsistencies, from placeholder graphics to design failure.
I mean, from the appearance of the crash frames, that ship looks kind of transparent.
TIS A GHOST SHIP LADS, TIS MY OPINION.
XCaliber
03-28-2013, 02:03 AM
The ship rising from the water is the Enterprise which had been hiding while on a mission on another planet this was revealed long ago.
Now i'd say there's reasonable doubt that it may not be Enterprise as the warp nacelles appear less bulky although that could be due to atmospheric burn off. Upon closer review I noticed that even the pitch of the arms that support them appear further apart plus the deflector portion seems to be almost compressed. Going by the footage it's hard to determine if Harrison is controlling another Starship could he possible have stolen an older model somehow? He certainly seemed to have a lot of followers so it wouldn't be a stretch by any means and given his occupation it's possible he already had special access. If the segments are completely unrelated then I would go as far to say that first part we see is from Kirk having a nightmare cuz afterall we all know it's his ship and crew.

It's clearly a red herring. Showing the Enterprise is a crippled state and then showing another ship crashing. There's no evidence to suggest its "Khan/Gary Mitchell/Ben Finney/Finnegan's" ship or the Enterprise. Although it's probably the bad guy's ship.

The ship is on fire and falling into the atmosphere before the shot of the ship crashing into the ocean in that trailer.

Although that would mean its an Enterprise. Money Money Money Money Money!

If you listen closely the line of narrative where it says "You are a pawn... Kirk." sounds more like an old recording of Ricardo Montalbon voice than Benedict Cumberbatch does anyone else concur?

Meh. It sounds a little like Ricardo, but but enough that I'd say more than Englebert Humperdink.

The "bad guy" ship looks like it could be the one crashing into the water, although the ship crashing into the water looks smaller.

Wanted to let everyone know if you go to the Esurance Facebook page they are having a daily contest and giving away 500 pairs of tickets daily until May 19th to go see Star Trek: Into the Darkness. Its very simple just like their page, enter your name, email address and the security word they show and it will tell you if you won or not. you can enter once a day until you win. I won my tickets already, they give you a code to use on fandango.com and its worth 31 dollars. Good luck all

This movie seems to going for a record for most posters anyhow the scaling on this one seems rather off when compared to trailers it's more like the size of the mining ship Nero used in the first one.

Was good but the ending felt anti-climactic, a bit.

Star Trek episodes were often anti-climatic. Adventure over, beam out, warp out credits.
I disagree though.
Having the 5-year mission intro ending was great. Now it sets up what Star Trek is all about. I actually thought that they would have left Khan on Ceti Alpha V or some other planet instead of deep storage.

Cumberbatch brought the goodness. And the woman that plays Carol Marcus is rather scrumptious.

I'd give it about 4/5 I'm fine with the lack of technobablbe and philosophy but there was some lack of originality and a few plotholes as well that really prevents it from being as great as it's predecessor.
