...in 1992. How did it come about? Why was he Intercontinental Champion for such a short time? Why not have Bret drop the belt to Roddy Piper at the Royal Rumble instead of using the Mountie as a transitional champion?
Were there any kayfabe or legit reasons for doing it this way?

Wasn't Bret violently ill or something?

I do know he wrestled the Mountie the day before the 1992 Royal Rumble with a 104°F temperature... but I always thought that was part of the storyline. Can anyone else shed some light?

I'm sure I read an interview with him somewhere that Bret's contract was up and he was holding out on a new deal for more money so they had him drop the belt just in case he left.
Possibly just made that up.

It was a little of both. Bret did have that high fever, but his contract was also expiring, which explained the quick title loss. He signed a new contract with the WWF and won back the IC title months later at WM VIII.

That's WCW, not WWF.

I believe that's 1991.

I've never heard anything about the title change being due to contracts or legit illnesses, I've always been under the impression that they wanted to set up Bret vs Piper at Wrestlemania and that was their way to shift the title so that Bret could win it back that way.
