View Full Version : Is Edge underrated?

For the amount of accomplishments he has, it seems like he's never really talked about being up there with great wrestlers in history. He's a Hall of Famer, yes, but I feel that he gets looked over.

He was alright. I think he was a better tag team wrestler than a Main Event performer, personally.

I think he's the greatest wrestler of all time, so yes I think he is underrated

Skippord is correct.
Also I met Edge and he is just dandy bars.

I've heard some say he is overrated, which is preposterous. He can do it all.

Edge is weird for me. Never was able to fully get into him, but he had some legit legendary matches. I just never "believed" in him. Like I just didn't buy his main event characters, it always came across as forced to me. I never bought him as "big time", but he definitely was a trusty hand and was pretty entertaining in the ring. Hated, hated, hated, HATED his spear though. Mind you, at least he protected guys when doing it, and that is to be respected.

He's overrated, really. He seems like a nice guy and I guess I was sad to see him have to retire, but I haven't really missed him since. That last feud with Kane over the World Heavyweight Championship still makes me randomly cringe throughout the day.

Pretty much agree entirely here. He was more than "good", and absolutely had a few amazing matches (one or two could be considered top 10-20 of all time easily) but I never viewed him on the level of someone like Punk currently is, or someone like Batista. Always kind of viewed him as a permanent "rotation guy" that never went out of rotation.
By rotation guy, I mean guys who can be plugged into the main event, usually at non-big 4 PPVs, give good or even great matches and maybe even get a run with the title but afterward are put back in the upper-midcard until their next rotation. Honestly, I'd compare him to Miz or Morrison in my eyes, with better matches under his belt and a permanent main event spot.
I guess I never really stopped seeing him as a tag guy.
Also, agree with the spear. Hated that shit. Someone with his build shouldn't be doing a move made to be used by guys who are bulky.

I think Edge is being modest about it all, you know. In retrospect, he had nearly 20 years under his belt, and spent the majority of it in WWE and accomplished what he wanted and went out as champion. Not many people can take that claim.

Think he majorly lacked as a face, and the spear just didn't suit him as a finisher, but overall he deserves the praise he gets.

Hardly but when you compare him to the likes of great Canadian wrestler he definetly deserves to be in the top 5 but he's no Chris Jericho or Bret Hart.

Fuck all of you who speak badly of the great man, Edge had 'it'. I wouldn't say he's under-rated, but I feel he's overlooked a lot when moments/matches are talked about. The thing I liked about Edge was the fact that when he was WWE/WHC, he owned those titles. He fought for them and you could invest in him as wanting to be on top. I can't say I get the same feeling from anyone else in recent time, not even Punk at this point with his 7382838 days as champ.

Definitely. He's probably my favorite wrestler alltogether, but whenever people list off greats, he's never been mentioned, even when he was active.

I did like when he used the Downward Spiral as a finisher, rather than the spear most of the time.
Not sure if that's the technical name, but that's what WrestleMania 2000 called it.

He wasn't that solid as a heel, either. But at least he had good workrate.

Edge is not an all time great. But he did it all. Definitely not under-rated, in fact he did better than he probably should have. I dont think I was at all into Edge after the Live Sex Celebration.
Hes the Paul O'Neil of the WWE.

That should've been the name change of that move when he joined Christian and Gangrel.

Edge doesn't get as much credit as I think he deserves but he's still in a really good place so he doesn't have much room to complain.

I loved Edge, but he probably overachieved and one of the guys who benefited the most from the brand split. He isn't on that short list of "say wrestling and this guy pops in your head" but he is certainly in the class under that with the great workers of their respective eras.

My biggest problem with him is as good of a performer he was, and even as competent as he was on the stick... his promo work just wasn't there. He was great with Christian, they were absolutely fucking priceless. But he lacked that sort of intangible intensity. He didn't seem to buy into his own storylines. It was all a little too cutesy and tongue and cheek.
In saying that, he still could get it done in the ring and he could still cut a promo. Just there are certain intangibles which keep him in the "very good" category as opposed to "great".

I agree with the critical opinion that he was really fucking good at what he did -- to the point where he could be technically classed as great -- but somehow he seems like an overachiever. It's not that he didn't earn what he has or anything, but he seems less than the sum of his parts, if you get what I mean?
I really enjoyed Edge as a babyface in 2002. People say that he couldn't do face, but he was tremendous when he went his own way from Christian in 2001. That was a clusterfuck year, but he still managed to stay relevant and a rising star. If he never got injured in early 2003, I think we would have seen Edge eventually rise as a top face before being so associated with being a heel.

Oh, and I absolutely adored him as a heel when he seemed to take inspiration from The Joker. He was feuding with The Undertaker at the time, and La Familia had just fallen through since Alicia Fox porked Edge as he was about to get married. He went completely nuts, and the dude felt like a physical threat, which is not something that Edge had really convinced me of before. Well, he was a threat, but in a "good wrestler that will do anything to win" sense. You got the vibe there was a monster in him during his feud with Taker.

Was just about to mention his feud with taker, specifically his promo with Mick Foley the week before SummerSlam 2008

Kinda agree a little with Xero about the Spear, although dude did know how to make it look effective. He may be slightly underrated, but the thing I loved most about his WWE title reign:
