Most places seem to think the first Fandango dancer's name really is Sophie Strutt but she's just a pro dance instructor and nothing more.

If that's her name, she might be the sister to Lindsey Strutt.

Only other way is to figure out where the Fandango hype videos or debut occurred. Might give the location of the top dance studio in the area and their top dancer since the WWE is only taking the top dancer from each location.

A lot of the people singing his praises in this thread have been doing so since he was on NXT Redemption well over a year ago and some go even further back than that. Hardly an overnight boner for the guy.

Also this is different from the Ryder situation because WWE actually want Fandango to get over.

Whether people like the gimmick or not, it gives the audience something to be entertained by, and makes Curtis memorable.

James Steele

A gimmick like this helps establish him and hopefully he will evolve and become a unique character that is over and memorable. Trriple H started as a "Connecticut Blue Blood" and organically evolved in the character we see today. A legitimate long-lasting star isn't established in a matter weeks or even months - it takes years.

whiteyford
04-10-2013, 01:54 PM
I don't think it's even a bad gimmick really, it's unique, and at least there's more to it than randomly shaking guys hands backstage, I just don't see there being any longevity unless it evolves quickly. I think if Curtis is given mic time and a decent push he'll get over easily though, guy was amazing with the backstage stuff on NXT.

James Steele
04-10-2013, 02:00 PM
He has shown a very aggressive side to the character, and feuding with Jericho is an awesome launching point for the character. He keeps having good matches and riveting feuds, he can slowly phase out the dance schtick and become more of his own guy. Curtis is an eccentric guy, so he will keep those little things that make Fandango interesting.

CSL
04-10-2013, 02:00 PM
I think there's a decent chance we see him evolve into that Johnny Curtis character or something similar, we've already seen bits of him with the various nicknames, the manliness quips, the comedy involved in him insisting his name be said right despite getting hammered by Jericho, general eccentricities etc. The more of that stuff we see I think the more people are going to latch onto him, not to mention this now potential trend of singing and dancing along to his theme, that'll be huge in terms of the office picking up on it and running with it etc. "Very excited" about where he could go from here

04-10-2013, 02:02 PM
i have been completely skeptical of this character, but the last month or so has really given me something to enjoy. i never saw him on NXT, so i have nothing to base my opinion on except for his work as fandango. i'm interested, and i thought i was going to hate it.

Mr. Nerfect
04-10-2013, 02:10 PM
I'm interested to see where they run with Fandango once his feud with Jericho is done. Do they put him in a mid-card storyline, perhaps give him either the US or IC Title, or do they move him against a heavier main event-level opponent? The WWE has done a good job at plugging young talent into main event roles lately.

It's all been terrible so far. This guy is honestly going to be Fandango for a long time, and be successful at it? I'm already tired of the name gag. At best, he is headed for Santino/Brodus/Tensai comedy land. Pretty soon it'll be Fandango versus Mark Henry in a twenty second match, then Fandango versus Sheamus in a twenty second match, then Fandango versus Randy Orton...you get the idea. The gimmick has to die at some point or he is long-term fucked.

The wrestling world is strange and weirder things have happened, but this has failure written all over it. I guess I'll put my foot in it when five years from now it's CM Punk vs. a white hot face Fandango main eventing Mania.

Edit - Admittedly, if he became comic fodder, I guess you could call it a successful gimmick...and his bank account wouldn't be unhappy.

Catastrophic wrongness.

Dude, just don't like it. It's nothing personal, I just think that they could have come up with something slightly different that still fits the character. They shouldn't change it now that it might possibly become the most successful WWE produced song of all time.

Fandango is my early vote to win a briefcase at the MITB PPV

If he keeps going the way he is going, then I don't see why he couldn't be a good choice to snatch up a briefcase. I was thinking about Money in the Bank earlier today, and it wouldn't surprise me if they do something again to differentiate between the qualification requirements for the matches (since brand doesn't appear to be factor anymore). You can have one Money in the Bank Ladder Match consisting of former Money in the Bank Winners -- the likes of John Cena, CM Punk, The Miz, Daniel Bryan, Kane, Alberto Del Rio, Jack Swagger and maybe even Rob Van Dam if they convince him to work a few dates here or there. The other MITB Ladder Match can feature guys that have never won a briefcase -- Randy Orton, Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, Dean Ambrose, Wade Barrett, Fandango, Sin Cara, Cody Rhodes, Damien Sandow, etc.

Love this fued between him and Jericho. Not that it really needs it, but wish it was over the I-C belt.

I kind of like how Fandango has sort of been a thorn in Jericho's side and preventing him from chasing championships. It makes this feud just that notch more personal. Jericho made a mockery of Fandango and now Fandango is doing his best to put Jericho's career on hold.

It was interesting that people mentioned the idea of turning Fandango face. He's sort of reminding me of Chris Jericho when he originally debuted in the WWE. Jericho debuted in a big way, was meant to be a heel but then just became so over that they had to turn him face. Fandango has had an interesting debut, called people by incorrect names (a Jericho-esque technique) and has been flamboyant and exciting like Jericho was.

A clean victory the next time Fandango and Jericho wrestle each other would do further wonders for Fandango, but maybe they could do something where Jericho goes for the Lionsault like last time but Fandango gets the knees up. Jericho lands on his feet and goes for the Walls of Jericho and Fandango cradles Jericho like last time, only this time Y2J rolls through and into a pin of his own, using the ropes to get the three count.

Fandango and his dancer are upset and Jericho goes up the ramp with a slightly heelish look on his face as the referee raises his hand. Cole voices surprise at Jericho cheating to beat Fandango as JBL talks about how the veteran outsmarted the rookie. Basically, you try and do a double-turn, with the bitter veteran becoming equally as obsessed with the rookie who upset him at WrestleMania as the rookie was with making a name for himself.

Like the idea, just not sure at this point in his career the fans would actually boo Jericho. I think Fandago totally works as a heel, similar to the way Ziggler has been working, with fan support. Only reason I mentioned the IC belt is because I don't think at this point Miz or Barrett an carry a program and it would make the IC belt relevant which it hasn't been in years.

You've got a point. Jericho completely re-invents himself as a heel, though. Even if the fans still cheer him, they could still add depth to their feud by having Jericho altered by the process of being humiliated by the newcomer. They don't really need to go that way, but it's just one possible route.

I'm fairly certain they are allowed to use the unblurred logo now. If not, just use a scratch-logo version of the Fandango silhouette with the red underline and don't use the initials, but just call it "World Wrestling Fandango" or "Fandango-tainment" or whatever they want to go with.

I see what you're saying. The whole I'm the star and this newcomer is embarrassing me thing. I think if they had Jericho do some highlight reel stuff but only talk about his Fozzy thing, it might work. Most of the fans wan't Jericho to be about about wrestling, and honestly Fozzy isn't a very good band. So if Jericho starts insistently talking about his other projects outside of wrestling, especially Fozzy, being that it's music and fits with the Fandago character, I think it could work.

Mr. Nerfect
04-14-2013, 02:59 AM
You could do the ending where Jericho uses the ropes to pin Fandango, and then in their rubber match, Jericho gets Fandango in the Walls of Jericho. Fandango fights to the ropes but Jericho refuses to break. Jericho could even apply his version of the move in the ropes, with him standing on the apron. Fandango has won the match via disqualification, but Jericho is refusing to break. You have Fandango's dancer pleading with Jericho to stop and he's just ignoring her as referees and trainers are out. The announcers do their serious voices. "This is too far, King." "Jericho is...he's just hurting this kid..."

Jericho then yells to the crowd "Come on, baby!" as they relentlessly boo him. Jericho can even mockingly try to get Fandango's theme started as a chant. Jericho walks to the back and referees and trainers check on Fandango and Curtis uses the ropes to get back to his feet to a pretty big pop, hopefully. Jericho sees this on the titantron and is absolutely disgusted. He turns back, runs into the ring and attacks Curtis some more. He could even tell the referees to "fuck off," adding to the illusion that Jericho has completely lost control. Jericho gets a steel chair and starts hitting Fandango across the back with it as he mocks Fandango's name. Jericho then begs Fandango's dancer to give him a kiss on the cheek as he is leaving, and she just looks at him disgusted and slaps him across the face. Jericho then looks at her and starts laughing. He then grabs her around the waist and starts dancing with her as she looks terrified. Jericho doesn't hurt the girl, but she collapses next to Fandango a wreck.

As he's leaving, Jericho stops and draws a "10" on one of Fandango's cards at ringside and holds it up giving himself a perfect score as the crowd hisses in Jericho's direction. The next show we have Jericho hosting a Highlight Reel with...himself. Jericho interviews himself. "You're the man who beat The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin in the same night. You're the man who beat three legends at WrestleMania XXV. You're a six-time World Champion and nine-time Intercontinental Champion -- and you lose to Fandango? Do you still have it, Chris Jericho? Are you still the best in the world at what you do?"

Basically they sell it as if Chris Jericho is approaching the deep-end of the pool. His loss to Fandango has really gotten into his head. Jericho challenges babyface WWE Champion that night in the main event. It could be John Cena, Ryback, CM Punk or even Alberto Del Rio -- depends on the time frame and what's going on. Jericho and the babyface champion have a pretty great match, but out of nowhere Fandango runs out and starts attacking Jericho. The announcers sell that they can't believe he's here given the beating he got from Jericho. Fandango tosses Jericho to the outside of the ring and proceeds to blast him in the back with a steel chair. He nails Jericho a few more times before Jericho clambers over the barricade to escape. Fandango then gets in the ring as the babyface champion steps out to give him the spotlight. Fandango then does some dancing in the ring to close the show.

Jericho vs. Fandango then takes place in some sort of gimmick match where Fandango gets the clean victory and Jericho takes some time off to do his part-time projects.

Road Warrior
04-14-2013, 03:19 AM
That's not bad, but honestly I really don't think the crowd is going to boo Jericho unless he does something awful. Fandango just isn't that much of a face for Jericho to get heat off of. Even if he does'nt break for the DQ, does the chair and dances with Fandago's girl, I still think he'll get cheered. Really the only way I think he'll get booed is if he starts with the whole Fozzy thing. If he insistently talks about how popular he is outside of wrestling he'll get heat. Especially if he goes into how wrestling is now his side project and he just doesn't really even care that much, I think he'd be able to get major heat. Have him do a live show with Fozzy and have it suck, which I'm sure won't be difficult, when Fandago finally comes out you'd be surprised the pop his music gets. It's as simple as Fandago takling briefly how Jericho can't dance and Jericho consistently bring up how he's the rock star and that's his life and blah blah blah. That's if you want Jericho as the heel.

Mr. Nerfect
04-14-2013, 08:19 AM
Even if they don't boo Jericho with my scenario, it certainly adds heat to the whole thing. You just position Fandango as the good guy so when he moves out of it with Jericho he'll have some fans. That's if you want him to be a face, lol.

^that was my take. If the whole "pronounce my name" thing is all he's got on the mic at this point, give him a mouthpiece. Then let him continue to draw heel heat with the silly dance moves and a victory streak until he's ready.

What they're doing is killing the heat he's fallen into
Thanks for your take

It always feels like WWE would rather brag about the successes they do attain rather than capitalize on them.

Exactly. They come off as an out of touch old man trying to be "cool" entirely too much and they don't really know how to appeal to the segment of the audience that got the Fandango thing over. More often than not in situations like this they just come off as horrifically corny and lame for it.

The DJ there is a huge wrestling fan and has his own custom made Shawn Michaels pants. He cut out the music around this time last year one night to get everyone doing the "Yes! chant.

Chris Jericho is apparently going to be on RAW this week. Throw him and Fandango into a match together and let magic happen. Put Fandango over cleanly and then have a Fandangoing celebration at the end. And just let him embrace it. Still keep him a heel and talk shit to the audience, but he's so arrogant and cocky that of course he loves it when he catches on and becomes a sensation. And of course, in his mind, it was always going to happen. Everyone is late to the party.

Part of me is thinking the only reason they put the US Title on Kofi Kingston was so that they could hot-shot the belt to Fandango. Maybe they will do that multi-man Ladder Match for both titles at Extreme Rules. If they hang the belts seperately they can have Fandango win one title and someone else take the other. A returning Christian as US Champion and Fandango as Intercontinental Champion?

Jericho's latest sabbatical was very ill-timed for Fandango. Still a lot of steam in a feud there.

I hope Fandango gets a spot in like a Triple Threat or a Fatal 4-Way for the WHC. He could shine and really solidify his spot on the roster.

Fandango and Chris Jericho could elongate their feud for the next six WrestleMania's and have a Best of Seven Series.

Andrea Lynn was ready for a big break.

The 20-year-old University at Buffalo senior has been dancing since she was 5. While attending Rush-Henrietta High School near Rochester, she visited Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic for a concert tour, and she’s used to hustling across New York State year-round for shows and competitions. She’s mastered everything from tap to jazz to ballet to ballroom, all of which she teaches at the Fred Astaire Dance Studio in Williamsville. She’s trained with Broadway stars, and unsurprisingly, she would like to join them one day.

“I could see her on ‘Dancing with the Stars,’ ” said Thomas Ralabate, chair of UB’s Theatre and Dance department. “She has that ability to do that, and to be an elite ballroom dancer.”

But on the last day of February, someone from World Wrestling Entertainment called the Fred Astaire studio in the afternoon. The WWE was coming to Buffalo for a show, and the company needed a young, attractive, proficient ballroom dancer, as soon as possible, no auditions necessary.

Four days later, Lynn was at the sold-out show at the First Niagara Center, ballroom dancing with Fandango, a wrestler who would soon be one of the WWE’s most popular and unlikely superstars. For Lynn, it was the start of what turned into a two-month run of traveling shows and televised appearances with the world’s leading wrestling company, which coincided with Fandango becoming the biggest social media sensation the WWE ever had.

She had not prepared for that.

“Usually for ballroom stuff, everyone is in glitter and sparkles and fancy costumes,” said Lynn, who uses only her first and middle name professionally. “Everyone, when you go to a ballroom event, is in some sort of formal attire. Backstage at Wrestlemania, however, the guys are in sweats and T-shirts – it wasn’t the same type of show that I was used to.”

So how did the WWE end up scouting a suburban studio for talent? “I have no idea,” Lynn said. “I think they just Googled it and tried the first place they could find. It was just dumb luck.”

Even if Lynn had less than five days to prepare for it, her sudden WWE stardom is as improbable as it sounds. For one thing, Lynn’s petite figure and perky manner don’t seem like an ideal fit for the body-slamming, table-smashing world of sports entertainment.

She wasn’t exactly a wrestling fan, either.

“I actually had no idea who anyone was,” she said. “I mean, I was aware of it. Like, I know who Hulk Hogan is and Andre the Giant is and stuff like that. But my family was never really into that. We were more of a theater, music, dance-type family.”

Fortunately for Lynn, the WWE was looking to inject a little more theater and dance into its brand with Fandango, a character who was planned and promoted for months before debuting in March. Although Fandango is portrayed by Curtis Hussey, a wrestler with almost 15 years of experience, the character is a strange bedfellow in the WWE roster: a fussy, flamboyant, sultry-voiced dancer who seems more interested in ballet than brawling, and works up his fiercest rage when his name is constantly mispronounced. (It’s Fahn-Dahn-Go – “breathe in the A’s,” as he told one interviewer.)

Presumably, Fandango is intended to help the WWE ride the wave of shows such as “Dancing with the Stars.” But the veteran wrestler needed a star dancer of his own to look like a ballroom pro. That’s where Lynn came in.

At the March 4 show in Buffalo, Lynn danced with Fandango as he entered the ring to his theme song “ChaChaLaLa,” a ringtone-ready tune of Latin-infused elevator music. They had little time beforehand to practice the dance, and their bit of ballroom barely lasted three minutes.

“It was just kind of ‘go with the flow,’ ” Lynn said. “I guess that adds to the magic. You don’t plan too much.”

The dance was supposed to be a one-time event for Lynn. But about two weeks later, the WWE called back. After scrambling to find a different local dancer for every show, the company wanted a consistent companion for Fandango. Lynn made a good impression in Buffalo. Was she available for more shows?

Lynn rearranged her school schedule accordingly, and asked Anastasia Abrashin, owner of the Fred Astaire studio, for some time off. Although Abrashin was unfamiliar with the WWE and said that it was “a little bit different” from what her dancers typically do, she was happy to oblige.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s WW – you know, whatever it’s called,” Abrashin said. “Not everyone gets an opportunity like this.”

For the next two months, Lynn was a fixture for Fandango, accompanying him before and after matches and sometimes joining him in the ring. She took on a new look to mirror the character’s prim-and-proper pompousness, with her brunette hair pulled back, her freckles hidden under makeup. She danced with Fandango in televised appearances across the country, including the pay-per-view Wrestlemania 29, which drew 80,000 fans to East Rutherford, N.J. – one of the largest crowds in WWE history.

Along the way, the Fandango craze took on a life of its own, when “Fandangoing” – a Hokey Pokey-esque dance inspired by Fandango’s painfully catchy theme song – somehow became an online sensation. Within weeks of Fandango’s debut, a #FandangoRevolution hashtag started, “ChaChaLaLa” charted on iTunes and YouTube videos of WWE fans, Houston Texans cheerleaders and PETA representatives “Fandangoing” went viral. It was the “Gangnam Style” of pro wrestling, and even though Fandango is supposed to be a villain – or “heel,” in industry terms – he became the WWE’s biggest crossover sensation in years. As an unknowing cohort in the Fandango Revolution, Lynn had mixed feelings about it.

“That’s not dancing, not at all,” she said, shaking her head. “That’s not giving the ballroom world justice. I can teach people how to dance if they want to learn.”

Lynn’s schedule remained as frenzied as her first appearance – she usually worked two shows a week, always learning her travel arrangements at the last minute and always on call for another appearance. But contrary to the stories of pressure and burnout that are common to the wrestling world, Lynn considered her two months in the WWE a pleasant experience – like being in “one big family,” she said. She taught some moves to Fandango backstage. She chatted with WWE CEO Vince McMahon, met the Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena, shared a locker room with the divas and ran into Diddy and Snooki at Wrestlemania. She was given time, space and a company iPad to do homework and study for finals. She was ready to stay with the WWE through the summer, but in early May, the creative team opted for Summer Rae – an established star, and a rare wrestler with some dancing chops. She became Fandango’s new partner, and for the time being, Lynn was out of the show.

Since then, Lynn’s life has settled back to a simpler schedule: teaching full-time again at Fred Astaire, completing her dance major at UB and not having to hear “ChaChaLaLa” anymore. But that doesn’t mean that her Fandango Revolution is over. Lynn said that her departure from the WWE was good-natured and “open-ended,” and the company still has her in mind as a potential dancer. Even now, she’s never sure when another call could come to the studio. But next time, she’ll be ready.

“They didn’t cut me off like, ‘We don’t want you anymore,’ ” she said. “They could call me next week, they could call me next year.”

As for the "Fandango'ing" craze that popped up after WrestleMania, Andrea entered dance instructor mode, noting, "That’s not dancing, not at all." She added, "That’s not giving the ballroom world justice. I can teach people how to dance if they want to learn.”

Too bad she can't be available full-time or else it would be a perfect fit to Fandango's complaining. He gets upset when people say his name wrong and she'd get upset at the Fandangoing from the crowd.

Still really want to see a Fandango vs. Wade Barrett feud, IC Title involved or not. Barrett's no-nonsense style and Fandango's "nothing but nonsense" style seem like they would play naturally off each other.
