TORRANCE, Calif. – Chris Weidman (9-0 MMA, 5-0 UFC) appears as though he'll get his long-desired title shot with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva (33-4 MMA, 16-0 UFC), and if everything goes to plan, it'll go down in July.

UFC President Dana White today confirmed the possibility, which Tatame.com first reported earlier today.

If booked the fight likely would likely headline the UFC's traditional pay-per-view offering on Independence Day weekend in Las Vegas. The likely date would be July 6.

"That's what we want, but no, we don't have it yet," White said today of the fight. "We've been talking (with Silva). It's not done, but we'll get it done."

Weidman has long campaigned for the fight, and though officials initially appeared they'd go another direction, White ultimately relented earlier this month and said he'd likely be next for the champion.

Weidman's title hopes recently got a boost when fellow contender Michael Bisping suffered a loss to Vitor Belfort, which cost the Brit a promised a title shot. But Weidman, a former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler, has put together a worthy body of work, including a perfect 9-0 record and wins over UFC notables such as Mark Munoz and Demian Maia.

He'd face what is clearly his biggest test yet in Silva, who's emerged as arguably the greatest fighter in MMA history with 17 consecutive wins, 16 straight UFC victories and 10 successful title defenses. Most recently, he followed a title win over Chael Sonnen with a non-title victory over Stephan Bonnar in a 205-pound non-title fight in this past October's UFC 153 headliner.

Hate that Weidman has had the shoulder injury cause he looked unstoppable against my boy Munoz.. He is still young so I dunno how the layoff/ring rust will effect him.. Anyway, if he is on his game, it might be a long night for Silva.. The Spider will def be the favorite but Weidman def has the skills to put him on his back and the muscle to keep him there..

Ugh

Really ugh

Beating Mark Munoz makes you #1 contender :| Bisping had to face a murderers row compared to this guy and still didn't get a shot.

He lost every single time it mattered..

KO'ed by Hendo
Decisioned by Sonnen
TKO'ed by Belfort

Sure if at those times he had won, he would have gotten his shot, but he lost, Munoz lost, Boetsh lost, and Belchar lost so Weidman is the number 1 contender..

He shouldn't of even had to fight Belfort for the shot, he clearly beat Sonnen IMO and Stann/Akiyama/Mayhem is just as 'good' a win streak as beating Munoz/Maia (AWFUL fight) and Tom Lawler.

I will watch just to see Andy clown him like with Okami and Maia, but still dont get why he is so highly rated tbh.

I thought he beat Sonnen and I'm convinced Belfort's physique in that fight is what made Dana change his stance on TRT usage. Especially when used by former roiders like Belfort.

I like Weidman a lot and believe he is deserving of the shot. On paper, he looks like one hell of a challenge to Silva. I believe that he will end up knocked the fuck out like the rest tho.

@ MOFO

He is highly rated cause he is undefeated and EVERY other contender has lost there contention fights.. He won his, which was Munoz, but then he got hurt.. After he got hurt all those same contenders continued to lose..

You can say Bisping beat Sonnen all you won't but the record books show otherwise.. After that LOSS, he came back and beat Stann, who is a gatekeeper, via decition, giving him yet ANOTHER contender shot, but he got KTFO..

I'd say the winner of Bispin/Belcher will fight the winner of Munoz/Boetch.. Dunno where that leaves Okami though..

I agree, NBT, except about the Bisping beating Sonnen.. It was a great fight but I believe Sonnen's grappling made the difference.. Also, you can say what you want about TRT and Belfort, but, at the time it was perfectly legal and the win remains..

He was meant to fight Boestch @ UFC 155 in a contender fight, pulls out via injury and gets the shot anyway... its no huge surprise or anything considering Sonnen and Nick Diaz got title fights off the back of losses but I'm just disappointed in the matchmaking...I'll be honest and say I'd still rather Bisping or Belcher got the shot anyway, loss or not

If only Rashad dropped down instead of taking that shitty fight w/ Lil Nog

But he is not coming off a loss.. You also have to consider Silva's say in the matter.. I mean, IF he was gonna fight GSP this summer instead of defending his title then Weidman would need another fight first.. GSP called out Diaz so that superfight was scrapped for the time being.. I wish Bisping had won too, cause that fight would draw HUGE numbers but he didn't..

You can't have it both ways, man.. The Weidman shot is much more conventional than a random shot like Sonnen's.. You are pretty much complaining about Sonnen's random shot but at the same time you wanted Bisping to get a similar shot.. Weidman isn't getting handed this, he won his contender fight against Munoz..

People are acting like like the Sonnen type match making is a new thing when the UFC has been doing it for years.. BJ Penn, after losing a LW title shot, moving up to take Hughes WW title.. Coututre, who hadn't fought at HW for years, coming out of retirement to beat Sylvia for the HW title..

Weidman actually earned the shot with the help of guys like Bisping, Boetch, Belcher, Munoz, etc all losing..

I really don't have any problem with this..
