Honestly, would you pay to see Buff Bagwell wrestle nowadays?

So I was talking with a promoter the other day and he had been in contact with Buff Bagwell (were friends years ago, finally got ahold of his number again) So Buff tells him that his rate is $1000 a show, plus airfare, plus a ride to and from the show to the airport.... but he's willing to negotiate (from what it sounded like, his demands go up as the price goes down) I advised him against it, not worth that in my opinion. He could probibly run 2 shows with decient local talent for that price, but lets say he did decide to book Buff Bagwell and tickets were $10 a piece (plus you can meet him before the show). Honestly, would you pay to see Buff Bagwell at an indy show nowadays?

I would pay up to $15 if the show were booked to be a one-man Buff invasion and the rest of the locker room beats on him. Maybe have a Battle Royal and everyone in the ring body surfs him over the top rope! For $1,000, Buff would need to throw a hissy fit to rile up the crowd before going to the back. Then he could try to interfere in the main event and be beaten down, maybe suplexed or powerbombed through a table.

and plenty of places hire rings, it's how some of the guys that own them get themselves and some friends a few bookings. And there are guys that claim they "don't do it for the money", "only care about putting on the best show possible" and some other nonsense, usually from small-time guys using an import or a "name" and then running a really small, hidden away, barely promoted show or just somebody straight up clueless

That's pretty much why I advised him against it, the numbers just wouldn't add up. He has his own ring and let's say in some miracle he finds a venue that won't charge him. Let's say he "negociates" Buff down so it cost him $1000 with everything, and he hires 10 other workers to fill out the card at $30 a piece (that's what alot of shows I've worked pay in Texas) So by some magical coincidence that all works (he gets family and friends to help him with the set up, music, announcing, refs, etc.), he would still have to get 131 people just to make a profit. Honestly, he only pulls maybe 50 people at his shows so I don't see Buff bringing in 3 times his normal audience. Maybe if it was 2003 he could bring in some fans for an indy show, but 10 years later... :-\

almost anybody can pull in a decent number if it's simply promoted properly/they're willing to put in the work no matter who's on the card, but quite a few guys simply can't be bothered or aren't willing to put in what's required to do that. There are shows all over that, promoted properly with no "names" on, regularly draw hundreds and hundreds and there are shows run by people that can't be arsed or don't have a clue that have a bunch of names on that get hardly anybody in. I've seen Bryan Danielson wrestle in front of about 14 people at the height of his ROH "best wrestler in the world" days and I've seen 2 people you've never heard of with a tenth of his talent main event a show in front of about 600 people. You get out what you put in.

Buff main evented a show at the MEN on that WWA tour, tagging with Jarrett against Sting and Luger. Match was obviously the drizzling shits and only Jarrett was putting any effort in. Buff eventually got the tag, went for the Blockbuster and Sting dodged but Buff didn't want to take the bump off it so he jumped down onto his feet and took a scorpion death drop for the pin. Jarrett hit him with the guitar afterwards to the pop of the night.

that was the 2nd UK tour, didn't get to see Sting or Luger :-\ we got Bret and Steiner tho so that was good. Main was Jarrett/Road Dogg/Steiner for the "World title". But yeah that sounds about right, when he fucked up on that first tour, he slipped both times and kind of fell onto Stevie Ray and apparently just thought "fuck it" and pinned him.
