View Full Version : Is Steven Moffat really all that creative?

This has been sort of on the back of my mind since reading John Dies at the End a few months back. I'd have to go back and watch Doctor Who and read JDatE again to do anything comprehensive, but there were a lot of similarities. Some were quite tangential, but if one were to pool them up, it looks less and less like coincidence. A lot of the big things Moffat is given credit for inventing also appear in a book that was first put up (in digital form) in 2001.

I'm not sure how big the overlap i between fanbases, but I'm curious as to whether or not anyone noticed this sort of thing.

I haven't read John Dies at the End, but I am a Doctor Who fan. I know you said you'd have to research to give a comprehensive post, but what were some major general things that stand out if you don't mind?

I think he's pretty creative, but he also has a tendency to milk ideas to death.

Honestly, the only one that's coming to mind right now is the "cracks in the universe" being quite similar to one of the plot points in the book. One of the people who makes the sojourn to Vegas is erased from history by a hole or a tear or something. David and John can remember him because of the Soy Sauce, which is also similar to the whole "You can remember them because you're outside of time" thing. Especially when you consider what the soy Sauce did to them.

I think I remember seeing parallels to the weeping angels, as well, but I can't remember. They were just boos in human form anyway. :shifty:
