Was it Miz? He beats John Cena for the title the year before and then next year he is only in a ten man tag match.

Benoit for sure

The obvious answer is The Miz.
The real answer if you actually think about it is Lawrence Taylor.

I should have stated "except the people who retired, was injured, or celeb"

It's Probably Miz but what about King Kong Bundy? Main Evented WM 2 then was in working with Midgets in a 6 man for WM 3?
Edit.. Nevermind Didn't read WINNING the Main Event. Carry on. lol
Maybe HBK? Won Ironman at 12 and was doing commentary for 13.
Hogan. Won the title at 9, didn't even get on the card again for 9 years!!
Benoit was a pretty big drop-off really/I'd say as big as Miz, wins the world title in a huge match at an anniversary Mania in the Garden over HHH & HBK and next year is a bit part in MITB

It's gotta be Benoit. Wins the title at WM 20 in one of the memorable moments of all-time. Benoit dropped off as soon he dropped the title to Orton at Summerslam 2004. He almost immediately went into the midcard. He was only a filler in the Survivor Series and New Year's Revolution main events. Then he was thrown into the MITB match at Wrestlemania full of guys they couldn't think of anything to do with and he wasn't really a threat to win that match. I doubt anyone other than Edge was even considered to be booked to win that one.

I kinda remember it almost being close to Miz not being on the card last year. I think he was replacing an injured ADR or Christian.
Although I will say Benoits fall from grace was harder because he was treated as a legit Main Eventer at XX and after SummerSlam faded away fast.
Still gotta say miz though

Miz.... Benoit had the greater main event, but the drop to the first-ever Money In The Bank is not as bad as one to a 10 Man Tag Team Match
Austin went from the biggest match of all time to a filler match against Scott Hall.
After Mania 17 the only way was down, really, but still weird to see a Stone Cold match in the middle of a card.

I dunno call me a mark for the Austin/nWo but I was pretty pumped to see that match up. Also I remember in the Hype for WMx8 they were saying that was a piece of the quadruple main event.

There was some allure to Hall vs Austin and they touted to up, but lets be honest, no one really cared and it ended up being less than the Jericho HHH match no one cared for.

How come Nash didn't face Austin?
I don't think he was injured at the time.

Didn't really wanna risk a quad tear at Wrestlemania to bring things down

Hall was probably the better option at that point. I actually enjoyed the build up to that match and didn't really hate the match itself. Just seemed odd, because even in hindsight I still think Austin should have swallowed his pride (allegedly) and went up against Hogan.

I don't think I have ever seen a Nash/Austin match would have been cool to see.
In Austins recent DVD he said he wanted the Hogan match.

At that point, I think The Rock was a better fit than Austin for the Hogan match.

I still can't believe The Rock shook Hogan's hand after he tried to run him over with an 18-wheeler.

The Miz seems like the obvious choice.
But, I'd like to make a case for Brock Lesnar. He main evented Wrestlemania XIX only to wrestle in a match that got totally destroyed by the fans at MSG. I know that match had a huge build to it, but Brock goes from having a Wrestlemania classic one year closing the show to getting yelled at by the live crowed his whole match the next year.

"Yeah brother, sorry I almost commited vehicular homicide on you, but we're cool now right?"
Is it really more difficult to believe than Rock bashing Mankind in the head with a steel chair 15+ times in front of his wife and small children, and them being Tag Team Champions less than a year later?

Mankind's whole gimmick was that he was a loveable oaf with brain damage and mental illness.
What about Eddie Guerrero? Defended the WWE title at WM XX and was in the opener at WM 21.

How bad is it that I always forget about Eddie. Really enjoyed his work while alive, but totally forget about him when discussing the greats...

thats b/c Eddie wasn't a great. He's only considered a great because he died of drugs back in 05. Whenever rasslers die people tend to make them out to be way better than they were. Except Crash Holly, he never got no respect. Also, the correct answer to this is Shawn Michaels WM12 he out rassled Bret in the Iron man match and wasn't even on the card at WM 13 b/c he was being a douche bag.
