Tiebreaker scenarios for the AL Wild Card spots announced.

If all three teams finish the year with the same record, Cleveland hosts Tampa Bay on Monday, September 30th. The winner of that game gets a Wild Card spot. The loser of that game plays at Texas on Tuesday, October 1st for the second Wild Card spot. The actual Wild Card game would follow that on Wednesday, October 2nd. The host team is determined as follows:

If Tampa Bay and Cleveland play, Tampa Bay hosts.
If Tampa Bay and Texas play, Texas hosts.
If Cleveland and Texas play, Cleveland hosts.

Note that this situation only happens in the event of a three way tie for both spots. If two teams tie for the second spot with the third team taking the first spot outright, the tied teams would have a one game playoff with the host determined the same as above. The winner of that game would then travel to the first Wild Card team to play the Wild Card game.

Can't imagine what will happen when Jeter leaves.

To be honest I can't really think of any other player who would deserve a sendoff like Rivera. He's just been ludicrously good his entire career, probably could go another few years at a high level if he really wanted to. But moreover he's always been so humble and such a huge class act. I hate the Yankees and so do a lot of people, but Rivera is the one guy there isn't a bad word to say about.

I don't even know if Jeter would get this kind of sendoff. Then again I'm not sure he's the type who would pre-announce his retirement. He'll turn 40 during next year but if he goes back to putting up Jeter-esque numbers I think he'd just keep going on a year-to-year basis and retire in the offseason when he does hang 'em up.

If he did announce retirement ahead of time I'm sure he'd get honored at each park and everything but it'd probably be more like Chipper Jones' sendoff than Rivera's. The biggest Jeter "moments" would probably come during the ASG and at Yankee Stadium, where he'd almost definitely get the same honor as Mo in having his number retired while still active.

But the Mets have said they still aren't retiring his number. I'll never understand why they're so stingy about this. They haven't given 31 out since Piazza left. It's clear they're never going to give it out again...so just retire it. He's the best hitter you've ever had, you dummies.

The Red Sox themselves are pretty strict with their requirements since its both 10 years played on the team and be in the MLB Hall to get a number retired.

Nope, the Mets don't have any sort of requirement. There's a panel of like 7 people who vote on the team HOF and whether or not to retire any numbers. So far they've only retired 3 - 2 managers (Casey Stengel and Gil Hodges) and Tom Seaver. The committee has said they don't want it to get to the point where they retire one number and risk opening up Pandora's Box. That's why there are no '86 Mets numbers retired. If you retire Gary Carter's number 8, you open up talk on if 16-18 should also go up for Gooden, Hernandez, and Strawberry since all of them played such huge roles in the Mets' greatest season ever.

I'm glad they don't retire the number of every significant player ever...but I do at least think each "era" should get a number retirement. Keith Hernandez' 17 should go up as he was really the leader of the Mets through most of the '80s. Carter only spent 5 years with the Mets, but he was a co-captain so if they were to put 8 up as well I wouldn't mind. Both numbers are out of circulation anyway so it makes little sense to not officially retire them. Gooden's 16 and Strawberry's 18 don't really have much of a case, they were great but should have been HOF'ers if not for the off field problems. 17 and possibly 8 is fine to do the '80s justice.

Then you throw Piazza's 31 up for the late '90s early 00's, and from there you don't have to worry about retiring another number until 2020 Wright (who already has most of the team records and will have a HUGE lead in everything by the time he's done) retires. That would be 6 or 7 numbers retired over about 60 years. That's really not that bad.

Remember when you were a Reds fan last year

I have been a die hard Pirates fan since the early 1980's. I also support the Reds and Indians (being the other "home turf" teams).

I have seen 1 game in Cleveland and have never visited the Reds Great American Ballpark. I have been to Three Rivers Stadium over 15 times and PNC Park about 15 already.

I will support the Reds when the Pirates are doing awful (aka last year and the previous 20) but when it comes down to it..at the end of the day....The Pirates were my first and most important love.

It's not a bad thing to support more than 1 team especially when your "real" favorite team is on a 20 year skid.....

Makes sense considering MLB didn't allow the Yankees (or any other team) to get dragged into the clinic mess in case lawsuits actually happened. Also no way A-Rod was going to risk tossing the Yanks under the bus considering he still needs them in case he somehow wins his appeal and already made them upset with the earlier rehab stuff.

It's really disappointing. However, it was probably the right move. In all probability, his elbow would have been a ticking time bomb. Any time he felt the slightest pain, there would've been concern that the elbow had gotten worse. Each pitch could have been the one that blew out his arm. Hopefully when he returns in 2015 he'll go back to being amazing.

On the downside, this does leave the Mets with another hole to fill in their rotation this offseason. Some of the flexibility they had with their pitching depth in the minors is gone. I really hope Alderson doesn't think "welp, we can't win in 2014 now" and back down on his word to finally start spending some money. I can't even fathom how disheartening it would be to see the Mets punt for the 4th offseason in a row and arrive in Spring Training in February with basically the same roster they have now.

Fatcesa would still be stat checking for Brent Musburger were it not for the Mets.

Never been so nervous for a game in my life. That includes watching Game 7's in Stanley Cup Finals, AFC Championships, Super Bowls anything. This is gonna be nuts tonight.

G.I. Joe Girardi returns to the Yankees on a 4-year deal.

Alright, I'm happy with that.

Still am happy when things don't go perfectly as planned for the Cubs (Really want that feeling to go away but it wont). Now they'l have to settle for a non-sexy name unless something crazy happens like Joe Maddon suddenly becoming available. No Scioscia, Gardenhire or Girardi means the best option might be Mike Maddux, but they said they want to prioritize managerial experience. If thats the case, it looks like they get leftovers like Manny Acta or Eric Wedge.

Is Charlie Manuel still available as a possible option?

Have never been a fan of Girardi and Im disappointed to see another four years of him running to his black book for "match ups." Wish they let him walk and promoted Tony Pena.

Dusty Baker :shifty:

He needs his horses. They'l have to acquire Corey Patterson to lead off and Neifi Perez to play 2nd.

Is Charlie Manuel still available as a possible option?

Possibly. They want experience and he certainly fits the bill. Did anyone young develop under him? Dom Brown? One of Svuem's issues was the regressions of Rizzo and Castro.
