To be fair:

That is an overly ambiguous question. It would be much easier if you stated what your intentions are with your machine.

Torrenting?
Gaming?
Donkey pr0n?

I would have replied yesterday, but was banned for apparently supporting Gertner somehow, el oh el.

Also, keep your windows tools disabled, they have yet to fix their security hole.

Talking like weather, news, computer temperature, etc.

weather: http://www.weather.com/apps/desktop-weather

News: I assume you want local news. Check your local news websites for their desktop app.

Temp monitor: www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/

Depending on how much of a demand you put on your machine, this will be slightly inaccurate because it will gauge the CPU temp. If you find your machine constantly overheating (especially from overclocking your CPU and/or video card) you are better off buying and installing temperature sensors inside your machine.

(EDIT)

Just don't put a sensor directly on top of the CPU. If you want one for the CPU, but it on the underside of the heat sink for the CPU.

Check out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qxkw7ua8Zco and skip to 4:00 for a simple solution, and it looks cool too, IMO.

The Bing Desktop tool can be neat.

Changes your wallpaper daily and tells you where the pic is from.
