Warner Bros. Games Montreal has taken the mantle of the bat from Rocksteady Studios this time around for Batman: Arkham Origins. WB Montreal has full access to Rocksteady's custom modified Unreal engine to capture the look and feel of the Arkhamverse. As the title suggests, the game takes place years before both of the previous Arkham titles when a young, unrefined Batman encounters many supervillains for the first time. On our full cover image below, fans will recognize the assassin Deathstroke, who appears for the very first time in a core Arkham game.
Heading up the vision for Arkham Origins is creative director Eric Holmes (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/10/24/eric-holmes-leaves-epic-for-warner-bros-interactive.aspx), known for being the lead designer of open world action hits The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction and Prototype. A self-professed lover of comics, Holmes even wrote the miniseries Transformers: Megatron Origin for IDW.
Gamers won't have to wait long to experience Batman's lastest adventure. Batman: Arkham Origins releases October 25, 2013 on Wii U, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

But that's not all. We also have a feature on the first handheld Arkham game, Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate. Releasing on 3DS and Vita the same day as the home console version, Blackgate is a completely separate experience that takes place after the events of Arkham Origins. Armature Studio is developing the 2.5-D Metroid-style exploration action game. Industry followers will recognize Armature Studio as the company founded by several of the leads from the Metroid Prime trilogy.

Game Informer (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/features/archive/2013/04/15/the-nemesis-of-batman-arkham-origins.aspx)'s month of Batman: Akrham Origins coverage, looking in-depth at the just-announced prequel to the popular Arkham games, continues, now revealing Batman's new top foe. While The Joker ruled in Arkham Asylum and returned for a major arc in Arkham City, in Origins we're seeing a much deeper underworld. The man hiring the assassins to come kill this new hero Batman has been revealed as Black Mask.


There are two characters who have been known as Black Mask in the world of DC Comics. The first, Roman Sionis, is the one appearing in the game. As Sionis, he could have run in the same social circles as Bruce Wayne, but as he transformed himself to Black Mask in the literal blood of his parents, he became the underworld leader who would, at one point, unite Gotham's gangs and even kill a Robin (Stephanie Brown).

“We realize that Black Mask is not necessarily as prominent in people’s minds as some other classic Batman villains, so we realize we also need to do work to explain why he’s really cool and make him felt in the game,” creative director Eric Holmes told GI. “It’s not something people bring a lot of baggage to when you see the Black Mask, so we have to do the work to make him scary.”

As the head of Janus Cosmetics and the new Mob leader, Black Mask's "brutal and sadistic" nature from the comics will translate over to the game, promises Warner Montreal.

“His thing is torture. That is what gets his rocks off,” Holmes said. “And he’s really good at it.”

The setting of a full Gotham City was also expounded upon. The game is set in midwinter of "Year 2" of the Batman's crime-fighting career, with the Christmastime setting giving them "a beautiful thing in an ugly place," says Holmes. Gotham will be a much larger world than the previous games, and will also represent a world lost to time, much like Batman: The Animated Series. The locations fans remember in Arkham City will still be there - but as normal locations in the more than twice-as-large city. To navigate the three-tiered city, a fast travel by way of the Bat-plane will be offered for the first time, as well.

A form of multiplayer has been confirmed.

The newest Batman game will have a multiplayer mode, we've heard from two independent sources.

Batman: Arkham Origins, a prequel announced earlier this month, will be the third game in the Arkham series, and the first to have any sort of multiplayer, according to our sources. We've also heard details about at least one multiplayer mode from a tipster, although we haven't been able to confirm them.
In early March, before Origins rumors started swirling, we heard from a tipster who claimed to have details about the Dark Knight's newest game. The game would be called "Batman Origins," he claimed, and the box cover would have a snowy, Christmas-themed background. We couldn't verify any of the information he gave us, so we sat on it.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, Game Informer revealed their cover for the April issue of their magazine. It's Batman: Arkham Origins (http://kotaku.com/batman-arkham-origins-is-coming-this-fall-471657142), and the cover is indeed full of snow. The game is set during Christmas Eve.
Our tipster had also shared some details about multiplayer in Arkham Origins, so we reached out to a number of industry sources for confirmation. Although we were unable to corroborate the specifics, we did confirm with a second source that the game will indeed have multiplayer. (Warner Bros. declined to comment for this story.)
As for the details, according to our tipster: during at least one section of multiplayer, you play as a member of Joker or Bane's gang while trying to take down Batman and Robin. The villains involved—who may be playable and customizable—include Killer Croc, Deadshot, Firefly, Black Mask, Deathstroke, and "some kind of Electroman character," our tipster said. That's all unconfirmed, but we feel comfortable sharing it, since our tipster was spot-on about the name and cover. This could be one multiplayer mode, or it could be the only one. We don't know. We'll find out more this fall.
Warner Bros. has shown interest in Batman-themed multiplayer before: Gotham City Impostors, a downloadable game that came out last year for PC and consoles, was a multiplayer shooter where players dressed up as fake Batmans and Jokers to duel online. This is the first Arkham game developed by a new studio: WB Montreal will develop Origins, taking the bat-mantle from the London-based Rocksteady Studios.

Mind you I actually hoped for some Batman/Robin/Nightwing/Catwoman 2plyr coop for the challenge mode since the combat system would allow for easy implementation, and it wouldn't hurt the game's main narrative. Nobody was cool with that, either.

Now you'll get some weird multiplayer about playing as the badguys to get the good guys with some stupid exp system and DLC and whatever else WB tells their in-house studio to do. I know I come off as a cynic, but I know what I'm talking about with these things. All you could hope for is the new guys maintaining the strengths of the first two games in regard to mechanics and story direction. A larger environment sounds like a good start in terms of gameplay and scope, however obvious after getting city blocks to play with last time.

According to Warner Bros, the reason for the lack of a Wii U logo for the multiplayer trailer is because the dev team doesn't have that version as a priority for multiplayer.

Well this thread died a sad death, the game is out for most parts of the world and user reviews seem to be very optimistic so far. For the US, it unlocks at 12 pm EST with preloading open now.

I have the game preloaded and ready for action over the weekend :D

i'm not expecting it to be revelatory, but i have no doubts that it's going to be a worthy addition to the franchise.

i keep telling myself that not all dev changes end up badly - just look at tomb raider's switch from core to crystal dynamics. that was the best thing they possibly could have done. yes, raider was a significantly older franchise when it switched devs and thus the mechanics and general set-up was feeling obviously tired, but i dunno. with such a solid framework to work off, and the base expectations from fans of the series to drive them, i'm not expecting this will be a disaster or anything.


i don't think it's going to be "game of the year"-worthy (especially since there's no hamill, no conroy, and a new composer who has apparently gone down a more 'electronic' route than the previous two games), but i still think it'll be worth admission

Hearing Deathstroke is a bitch to beat on various gaming sites. One of the toughest bosses to come around in a while.

Fucking Deathstoke is a fucking hard boss. I am trying my best to beat him but he keeps hitting my balls. About 25% damage in, his mask comes off and he goes into full of beast mode. I haven't even managed to get him into his next phase(s) which get progressively more difficult. Oh and did I mention this is about 20% into the game? #%^!^!#^
