An important thought was raised in the Iron Man 3 thread that touched on something I wanted to address for quite a while in this section of TPWW. More than a few times it was cause for controversy either intentional (rare) or unintentional (very often). This thread, less a discussion and more a FAQ, deals with what to do with and around Spoilers.
First an important distinction between spoilers and speculation. When movies come around and there's a thread on it we like to discuss what it could be about and what we expect. Most of the time it's mostly positive excitement or worry depending on the marketing materials and interviews released. But always, we come down to discussing the story. It's nature, we love to speculate on it. So just to be clear - speculating the plot of a movie is not spoiler-ish, even if somebody's thoughts are revealed to be right on the money.
Moving on, let's talk actual spoilers. We're in an age where it's a miracle any movie releases with much of the story hidden during the hype campaign. Things leak. So here's a fact on what to do in the event something legit gets out in the wild as far as swimming in Movies/TV/Books is concerned, because I can't help you out on the internet at large!
Knowing/Sharing Spoilers:
So you do some digging because you absolutely must know who why Bruce Willis never interacts with anybody but the boy; or maybe your eyes came across the wrong comment post at the wrong time, but now you have a devastating scoop on an upcoming movie. Now what?
- By default, try to resist sharing it, or share with somebody via PMs that's simply as curious as you are.
- But if you must share in the movie's thread, respect everyone's enjoyment of the movie and use spoiler tags:
Ex:
[s p o i l e r]Bruce Willis is fucking dead[/ s p o i l e r]
True: Bruce Willis is fucking dead
- Also, it helps to post in open the severity of the spoiler; not to entice (though it may do just that), but to let people know clicking that tag may reveal something pretty big. Saying Bruce Willis has a troubled marriage is not as sever to share as he's fucking dead, for instance.
- Discussing spoilers in tags is proper all the way up until opening day, not midnight release - as midnight releases, in my opinion, serve but a few of us. After opening day, speak freely about the movie spoilers and all.
Avoiding Spoilers:
- By default, if you wanna be absolutely certain to avoid any kind of spoiler no matter how light, it's probably best you go dark from the thread the moment you start hearing about leaked scripts and screenings. This is the only way to be sure.
- However, as you may still want to discuss the movie in general or check out the latest media, you're gonna be in the thread. So be wary of spoiler tags and 'avert your eyes' from certain key words in the open. Don't ask questions you don't wanna know the answer to.
- After opening day, and you didn't see the movie yet, just avoid the thread altogether (and the internet for that matter). It is up to you to see the movie and nobody can held accountable for discussing readily available info after the fact. Go dark, and see the movie. And you don't see the movie and you read a spoiler, that's on you.
- Before the movie launches widespread, you do have a legit complaint if spoilers are dropped in the open. And a definite complaint in the case of...

"That big evil guy with asthma...?" "...Yeah?" "Luke's dad." "Fuck you."
Spoiler Attacks:
- Somebody once rep-messaged me major plot points of the Dark Knight Rises, and there was no way for me to foresee such a thing. I'm not a mod of this forum, but that's a week ban in my opinion. Please report spoiler attacks like these to the mods of the forum and perhaps new penalties can be added for things like this. Serious Business.
- On the other end; please respect people's enjoyment of a movie and don't drop trojan spoilers in PMs, rep messages, or out in the open purposefully. Not only is it rude, hopefully you may well be punished for it soon.
What is a Spoiler?:
What constitutes a spoiler? Well things that show up in official media is obviously free to discuss and speculate. Things that require some digging to find out are obviously spoiler material, and should be treated as such. These things include:
- Major plot points and twists.
- Production effects that the studio puts much effort into hiding, like Harvey's Two-Face make up in TDK (put up recklessly in its thread years ago).
- Endings.
- Interestingly enough, usually things from the 2nd act of a film, since studios seem okay sharing many 1st and 3rd act material often in trailer form. Though even then plot details should be treated carefully.
That's all I got for now and any additions or questions are welcome. This is as conclusive as I can get on this and I hope it clears some things up. I'm not a mod, but I've been here quite a while as one of my two main sub-forums and I figure I share my thoughts on this. Thanks for reading.
