View Full Version : The WWE should bring back Vince Russo

I know this is gonna get shit on, but hear me out.

People constantly complain that none of the mid carders or upper mid have any storylines whatsoever, which is completely valid.

Say what you will about Russo, but even when he was in WCW, mid carders had storylines. They were at least given something to do and had an identity.

If Russo were to come back with Vince as his filter I guarantee the WWE would be a more interesting product. Been thinking about this for a while now.

Thoughts.

It can't hurt.

I really don't see the drawback

Yup. Hell, I still love his first run of WCW. The second, not so much, but even at his worst, at least the mid-card had something to fucking do.

He doesn't get nearly the credit because smarks treat Cornette like he's fucking God.

absolutely they should. Not sure he could "exist" as just another writer but you never know

Jim Cornette is such a whiney penis.

But I think anyone would fail in that position, they say now things back stage are written week to week. only if he can get them out of that mind set, then he might be able to change things.

Case in point:
RKO/Bryan vs the Shield at the PPV. Last week the plan was for RKO vs Bryan at payback. but then the sheild would have nothing to do so they are giving us the match we had for free on smackdown at the PPV.

I think it's a great idea but I have a feeling Russo wouldn't be able to coexist with the current crop of writers. In the late 90's the other writers were like minded for the most part and in WcW he was THE guy and what he said went. These guys seem to be hand picked by HHH and Steph and Russo, while it wouldn't be a bad idea and I would love to have him back, probably wouldn't fit in with the McMahon-Helmsly regime backstage.

Noooo they were not. Bruce Pritchard and Jim Cornette were with him and they HATED him

Fair enough but it seems like Russo's ideas won out and did well for the company and after he left the tone stayed the same for another year or two,up to about WM 17. He had pull, but he wouldn't be nearly as influential now

I doubt Russo would want to come back to that mess of a writing department. Not sure he'd mix well with Stephanie. Getting hated by people like Cornette and Prichard is ok because they are not the boss. Heard Stephanie doesn't like him because he was set to come back in 2002, but it all fell through.

Could work out again although its going to require the WWE to actually follow through with development and not constantly changing plans/direction every week.

Unlike with TNA and WCW, the WWE is smart enough to provide some filter to all the crazy ideas Russo tends to come up with.

Either that or hire someone like the guy who replaced Russo. According to Wikipedia it was Chris Kreski and his biggest contribution was using storyboards to keep all the ideas and storylines flowing in order.

I don't think it even has to be Russo, just somebody who's allowed to focus on the midcard and let them get on with it inside their own little bubble like the Divas had a while back when Finlay was the agent. Maybe somebody who would give the talent a little input into their characters ala Heyman.

I love Corny, but I also understand where he is coming from realistically. he said many times that Russo was a better writer when he had someone filtering and selecting his storylines. but when he is left in control on his own is when it goes to shit

Yeah Cornette generally makes a lot of sense, he just hasn't moved on from the territory days.

I'd be happy if Cornette is never interviewed again.

Jim Cornette and The Iron Sheik are both entertaining as fuck to listen to.

He's usually got a great mind for wrestling, too. At least the simple things. That being said, I remember watching this fantasy booker thing where he was asked to re-book the first year of invasion angle and it was just awful.

the first three-four hundred times saying the exact same stuff over and over again they were, sure. Now it's just a bit sad

A lot of what he says is just common sense really but some of the ideas/gimmicks he puts forward come across like something from the 70s/80s and are just kinda cringeworthy. He's another guy who would probably work well on a committee as long as there was somebody there to cherry pick ideas, assuming he could actually go a week without blowing up.

Russo returned in late December 2003 but was gone by the 2004 Royal Rumble. I don't think Vinny Ru wants to be under Vinny Mac's thumb, especially with all these weekly rewrites.

That said, he could definitely juice up the product while being steered on the longterm arcs like for WrestleMania. It's just that he doesn't want to be steered.
