View Full Version : Darren Young comes out

<font color=goldenrod>This was in the 100,000 replies thread, but honestly it deserves its own thread. Someone came out in an industry that still has homophobic stigma even in 2013. This is big news, and good on Darren for feeling comfortable enough to come out.
I do hope WWE don't turn this into a storyline. But, I've long thought the PTP would work as a face team and I think that might to start going in motion now.
http://www.tmz.com/2013/08/15/darren-young-wwe-superstar-gay/
WWE superstar Darren Young just dropped a bombshell, telling TMZ, he's gay ... and no, this isn't part of the act.
Darren was at LAX Wednesday when we asked whether a gay wrestler could succeed in WWE, and Darren laughed, saying, "Absolutely. Look at me. I'm a WWE superstar and to be honest with you, I'll tell you right now, I'm gay. And I'm happy. I'm very happy."
For the record, Darren is now the first openly gay wrestler ever at WWE ... and the first headlining wrestler ever to come out while still signed to a major promotion.
Other pro wrestlers have been rumored to be gay, but that's it ... just rumors.
Bottom line: this is big, big news. For all its chauvinism and testosterone-driven bravado, coming out in WWE is tantamount to coming out in the NFL.
Of course, wrestling is a little different, particularly because of how physical it is, and how little clothing is involved -- but Darren is completely unfazed. Watch the video to hear why.</font>

Well Pat Patterson is open if you want to count him. Obviously he's not on that active roster, but if I recall he was openly gay during his career.
Regardless, thats dope of him. I imagine it takes a lot of courage to do something like that, especially in that type of business. Good on him, I support him, and it by no means affects my feelings on his hilarious shenanigans with PTP.

Pat Patterson is openly gay, but when he was an active member of the roster, I don't think it was known to the fans. But either way, big respect to Darren Young. It can't be easy to come out in this business where homosexuals are somehow seen as less manly than heterosexuals. Being black is enough to stereotype you in professional wrestling (Crime Tyme, Shelton's mama). Being gay is just a double whammy. Let's just hope HHH doesn't make some bad joke at his expense, like when he compared Lillian Garcia to a horse.

When Orlando Jordan was openly gay/bi everyone just seemed to see it as kind of gross and it seemed to be part of the reason for him leaving. Now that gay is more newsworthy and relevant, all of a sudden it's a celebration.

Yeah, that would be like the Christopher Street Connection from Jersey All Pro Wrestling. As a current near-jobber, Young really has nothing to lose by coming out. I'm sure WWE will assign him more BE A STAR promotional work, if not more ring victories.

Well, nice to see that Darren Young is taking one for the te... uh, throwing himself on a swor... becoming a martyr (good, that won't work as an unintentional pun) so that they don't have to publicize anyone more "vital".
I mean, I'm sure there is belief that it's so much nicer for WWE that they can throw their "token gay guy" chips behind a tag team jobber for this pub instead of somone making a huge deal about it in the middle of the next time they decide to push Ryback and hoping it doesn't hurt buyrates. Pretty sure there still has to be some brass in WWE and/or sponsors who still do give a crap about such a non-issue.

If people weren't trying to stop homosexuals from getting married everywhere this wouldn't need to get attention.

Right, because the idea that one member of a homosexual relationship may assume a masculine role while the other assumes an effeminate role has absolutely no basis in real practice.
Poit summed it up in words so precise and eloquent they are wasted on you.
If you cant see how out dated and small minded "Which one of you gay guys is the man" then there is no reason to speak anymore.
Tedious finds a way to always defend biggots, racists and idiots.

People are giving this *way* too much attention. It is almost like we're rewarding him for bringing up something private and personal.
We also shouldnt support people that publicize their illness because that is private and personal as well.

I like how the PTP suddenly became faces and Darren Young suddenly became the half of the team that gets the hot tag.

Probably wanted to say something dumb to get Darren mixed up, and it backfired horribly. At least that's my guess.

You know, most journalists only publish a portion of all the questions they've actually asked, so you're onto something...

You know, Ted Jr. should have kept the Million Dollar Championship instead of giving it back to his dad.

I hope Darren Young uses his new found fanfare to elevate his status in the WWE.

I do enjoy his finisher. I use that gutbuster as a signature move in WWE 13
