yeah it's disappointing, but how often does he even announce anymore? the rare ppv? i'm not sure if he does anything backstage anymore either
Can't believe they didn't use him this year at WM29. Would have been nice to hear him call the Punk vs. Undertaker match.
Having him do pre and post show with a few other people like Kofi Kingston was pretty ridiculous IMO

I'm sure he'll be around occasionally. Outside of hosting the PPV pre-shows and calling the occasional Wrestlemania match, I'm not sure what exactly he still did for the company in the last several years.

As noted earlier, WWE announced this afternoon that Hall of Famer Jim Ross is retiring after 20 years with the company. According to F4WOnline.com, Ross met with Vince McMahon earlier today, and the decision was made to end his tenure with the company. The company reason for Ross' departure is that he wants to "focus on his personal business endeavors."
The report noted that the decision was made by Vince McMahon, and that they first heard that it could possibly happen on the day of SummerSlam following the 2K Sports panel. The panel, which was hosted by Ross, featured Ric Flair upsetting WWE officials for going off script and "hijacking" the event. There was heat on Ross for not cutting Flair off and taking control back over the panel. For what it's worth, McMahon commented on Ross' departure on his Twitter account, writing, "Thank you @JRsBBQ for 20 years of service with @WWE."

So sick of this idiocy. He wasn't treated any worse than anybody else; in fact WWE has done more to polish and shine up his legacy than anyone or anything. Without WWE he'd be remembered as some fat hick who did some announcing.

TNA actually had a good chance of getting him in 2010 when his previous contract was almost up but only as a real GM and not as an announcer.
In 2010 there were talks between Ross and TNA to have Ross come in and serve as a legitimate general manager capacity in the front office but ultimately Ross decided to re-sign with the WWE at the time.

So tell me, how many times has the man in that picture been disrespected and humiliated in the same way? It's part of the ridiculous double standard of convenience that wrestling fans have. Vince McMahon's on-screen character is an evil, heartless bastard who will fuck with anyone. And anyone with an on-screen role is also a character as well. This kind of shit is as old as the face/heel dynamic. It even has a name: heat. Why is Jim Ross supposed to be immune to it?

That's how I found out about Eddie.
I remember I went to check out WWE.com and I saw a large picture of Eddie and some text but I didn't bother reading the text as I automatically assumed that it was just some sort of article on him or something.
I check out WWE.com a bit more and I do other things, until later in the night I go back to WWE.com and see the same picture but the text catches my eye this time and I read it and I was left completely shocked.

A few differences. When the Boss degrades himself its not the same as him shitting on his workers.
For 20 years his medical conditions and appearance have been mocked on the reg.

Vince McMahon pissed himself in the ring, let himself get covered in shit in the ring, took a bedpan to the head, tossed Rikishi's salad, gotten kicked in the junk, etc, etc.
Why is JR the only guy who gets this "oh poor baby" treatment? Why isn't WWE decried for the humiliating things Michael Cole has been put through? What about the things that Bobby Heenan went through? There's a guy who was made to look like a complete ass on TV time and time again. How about Patterson and Brisco as Vince's stooges? I don't remember JR ever being tossed into a garbage truck a la Eric Bischoff... who incidentally also got face-raped by Mae Young at least once. Bobby Heenan and Jerry Lawler mercilessly verbally assaulted Bret Hart's parents for months on end. Mick Foley? How much of his career was made in WWE by being humiliated and looking pathetic? I could go on. But oh, that's right, having a disability inoculates you against that, right? Can't make fun of the handicapped... well unless you're Zack Gowan of course. Unless you're basically anybody else. Just not JR. Because he's special apparently. And none of this on-screen "humiliation" comes anywhere close to the kind of stuff that happened backstage for real in the territory days that so many people dry-hump on a consistent basis.
You take the good with the bad. You take the money, you play the part. JR could have walked a long time ago. But you know what, I have a feeling he sits back in his house knowing he's never going to want for anything and he's set for life, and it isn't due to his work for Jim Crockett or Bill Watts, it's his work for Vince McMahon. WWE consistently puts JR over as the greatest announcer in wrestling history. That is going to be his legacy. The only people who will see JR's legacy as one of humiliation and disrespect are the people who want a reason to hate Vince McMahon. You're on on-screen talent, you're a character. If you can't understand that and have to personalize everything, then you're a mark, plain and simple. And if Jim Ross didn't like what happened to his on-screen character, then he should have headed on home.

No, I'm saying that the only person whose opinion actually matters in this whole subject is his. If he thinks that the good that he has reaped from the wrestling business has been worth the bad, then that's how it is. I'm glad to see your continuing level of consistency when it comes to just hurling insults and snide remarks instead of actually forming thoughts and stuff though.

I pretty much agree with Tedious, insomuch as if it really weren't cool to be the ass end of jokes for 20 years, I'm sure JR would have had something to say about it long before now. Hell, something as serious as Lawler dropping dead from a heart attack is now open season on the announce table. I would assume if Jerry were raw about the subject matter, that would never happen on air as comfortably as it has in random banter, or nearly as often. Paul Bearer's ACTUAL DEATH was used to add drama to an Undertaker angle. Everytime they went to Oklahoma, they make it a point to a) bring out Ross for the hometown pop, and b) use his noteriety to try to get someone some heat for beating up on the homer. If he truly wasn't down for that, I'm sure we wouldn't have had nearly as many "JR appreciation nights" as we have seen in the last 10-15 years.
The only time I ever remember anyone making fun of JR was truly considered in completely poor taste by and large is when Ed Ferrara did it in WCW. In that case, its like the difference between you playfully calling your gay brother a "fucking homo", as opposed to some random stranger in the street doing the same thing. It doesn't equate.
Theo Dious
09-13-2013, 12:13 AM
But yeah, for the record, I'd endure any of JR's supposed humiliations and disrespect for the chance to be at the center of the wrestling world for 20 years and have a literal ringside seat for and play an integral role in some of the greatest moments of its history. I'd be happy to play the on-screen role of a guy who gets shit on by a cruel boss if it afforded me the opportunity to have the unique and priceless experiences Jim Ross has had.

Agreed. There's using something to further a wrestling angle and there's just being mean. Russo and Ferrara were just mean.
