View Full Version : Gimmicks that couldn't have possibly worked with a different alignment.

Basically, what the thread states. Name gimmicks where it couldn't have worked if the guy given the gimmick was the opposite of what he was.
Example:
IRS could NEVER work as a face. EVER.
The Bushwackers gimmick is not conducive for being a heel team(unless they are on Family Matters).
Ironically, it's impossible for their run as the Sheepherders to work as faces.
list your own examples.

I'm not so sure a Funkasaurus could be a heel. I would love to see it tried, though.

A happy-go-lucky Dungeon of Doom.
Luther Reigns as a face with ANY gimmick. :)

Bushwhacker Luke, woooooo!

Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji. All faces protecting the likes of Hulk Hogan from dastardly run-ins! And with the oft unused FACE manager to boot!
Also, Nailz. He actually wouldn't have worked at all without Bossman being around, since that was the whole point.

I think Nailz could have worked without Bossman. I'm pretty sure Crush did a similar gimmick. Probably not the best babyface though, I'll give you that.

The Funkasaurus gimmick could be that he smells bad, so when he comes down the to the ring, the fans will be like "hey what's that smell", and Clay can be like "ha, I haven't showered in a week", and he can feud with Santino who is always chasing him with a bucket of water.
I wish I could positive rep myself for this idea.

ECW not included, I don't think "Ravishing" Rick Rude would make for a good face.

If Andre the Giant were a midget I think he would have still had a similar gimmick.

Bastion Booger v2.0?
any heel gimmick can work as a babyface with the right opponent/villain. Not so much the other way.

Another one, "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase
He and IRS turned so many people face it isn't funny.

Clarence Mason was a lawyer. Don't know if he would have gotten too many cheers as a face.

Bushwhackers were heels in the AWA I think. But they had a different name which escapes me at this very moment, but were essentially the same thing, just more vicious brawling types.
Was it The Sheepherders by any chance?

Despite the attempt in ROH, IIRC, Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat.

The water bucket spot hasn't been done since Doink (not counting slop buckets from the Godwinns), so that would be a welcome gimmick to my eyes!

"The Genius" or Damien Sandow type gimmick
Anti-American

Brodus Clay yelled shit in the first episode of Total Divas and has been a heel to me ever since

Didn't Ricardo throw a bucket of "water" on someone recently but it turned out to be confetti. Or maybe it was Santino? I remember this happening recently. Very Doink-like.

Hmmmm. You could argue that Bret's Anti-America schtick made him a face everywhere outside of the US.

I'm convinced that if The Fabulous Rougeaus were not cheating and were facing heel tag teams, they would have been faces because most fans would have not gotten the joke.

I remember quipping about how even Ricardo got AJ wet.

Eugene would not have worked as a heel. So much so that they realized this and abandoned his heel turn after one week.

He did do the confetti in the bucket thing though, to Big Show.

Confetti in buckets, Big Show covered in slime. Since when have they turned into Nickelodeon? Look at what Austin does here.

LOL, "Corbin Blue" Valboswki! Nuclear heat for sure. :y:
Ryan Clark as a face. I'm shocked it hadn't been posted earlier.

Damien Sandow really doesn't seem like he could have debuted as a face.

Pretty much any gimmick that involved the dude being in love with himself unless your a guy that is so over the top like Tyler Breeze.

He actually was a pretty good face prior to his Million Dollar Man era.
He and Dr. Death were a good team for awhile.

I'm pretty sure this is about gimmicks that wouldn't work with opposite alignment, not workers.

fine whatever.
Another one that wouldn't work is The (original) Sheik as a babyface.

I guess that could be said with with Abdullah the Butcher, Bruiser Brody, or any of the Moondogs as a face. I could never see Tommy Dreamer or DDP (post WCW) as a heel. DDP even got a huge pop when he revealed himself as the stalker of another man's wife, that's not something easily done

I don't believe the headbangers would ever have worked as a heel team. They were too happy-go-lucky and that seems to resonate much more with a face team.

They were also heel in SMW.
Abby and Brody were and have worked as faces.
Stan Hansen, I don't know if he could work stateside as a face. Epically on'ry.

From what I've heard, Ricky Steamboat never turned heel. They sold him as a family man fighting against the party boy Ric Flair. I wonder what a heel run would look like though. A cocky HBK heel or a true blue Kurt Angle are likely examples but not a badass HHH type.
I had a thought The Undertaker has always been gray in the alignment area outside of significant gimmick changes(biker taker and Ministry) at his core he's not really a good or bad guy.

I think he may have once in ROH, as a heel authority figure. What's really crazy is if you consider his real name is as heelish as it gets: Richard Blood.
Now matter how many times it's been attempted in TNA and WCW, Heel Sting Just. Doesn't. Work.

Granted in TNA the idea was that he was a face all along and his actions were attempts to warn people of the real evil.
He went around being a cryptic dick about it but it's justified in that he couldn't let the real heels know he was onto them, shit A TNA story I actually understood.

TNA reflects a world gone mad on a schizophrenic blend of nonsensical booking, MMA cameos, and Panda energy drink.

HHH when he was in DX and doing "Suck it are u ready break it down" and all the dirty jokes was cool and funny and made for a very marketable face. As a badass heel, he was full on nasty and stood in the way of top guys and created some pretty cool feuds. When he's a face and not telling dirty jokes or the DX stuff, he can be pretty bland, like in his feud with Jericho in 2002.
Think you've missed the point of this thread.

Funny you say 'gray', because when he was wearing gloves of that color, he was most definitely a heel.

Locking the Ultimate Warrior in a casket was a dick move is what I'm saying.
Tbf, he did say that Taker had no alignment apart from the periods when he was clearly a face or a heel. So, pretty much always had an alignment, then.

It may be near impossible for a Muslim wrestler to debut as a face character, which is a shame since the foreign invading heel gimmick was stale even during the Attitude Era.
