View Full Version : Which wrestler was the worse commentator... Booker T or Randy Savage?

Listening to both of these guys commentate is so hilariously awkward. It's crossing the threshold of so bad it's good. But who is the more ridiculous commentator to listen to?
If you need reference points just find any raw on youtube from about 1994 for Savage as well as KOTR 1993 I know for sure he does. It's amazing how a guy who was such a great promo and performer could blow such hard nuts as a commentator, but it was pretty funny. He commentated the classic 123 kid vs Bret Hart match and he was like "I need to take some notes and add some moves to my REPERTOIRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRE" lollll so retarded.
As far as Booker I just watched the Money in the Bank 2011 and he is just brutal but that same level of funny awkward as Savage to the point Michael Cole pretty much just reminds everyone how stupid Booker is.
I think they are essentially on part with each other for headshakingly awkward.
Thoughts?

Honestly when Savage called a match you would think he never wrestled in his life because it seemed like he didn't know what the fuck he was talking about. And it's not like he was trying to put himself over either. He was just bad.

Booker T was awful and it really showed how good Michael Cole really is.
Savage would just talk in throwaway sentances.

Heenan: Tatanka looks to be staggered

Superstar Billy Graham was laughable at time. Haha I remember this Savage match where he was dead serious about Miss Elizabeth should bulk up to 200 pounds so she could handle herself. It was hilarious because he wouldn't let it go.

To be fair, this was during his "I hate/idolize The Rock" phase, and EVERYTHING he did on a mic was terrible, not just commentary.

The odd thing is, it's like Booker did it on purpose. He could cut decent promos, and his commentary moments in TNA with Nash ("IT'S BLACK SNOW, DAWG!") were awesome. Savage was just being Savage on commentary, and it would be like putting in-character Warrior in the booth.

No no no I've got the worst right here in my DVD collection.
Back in 2001, a company called tokyopop released a bunch of FMW DVDs here in the states. They had a couple guys dub over the matches with a couple American commentators.
One guy was just a generic play by play guy but the color guy.... Holy shit was this guy awful. I love Hayabusa but he made these matches hard to watch. You could tell he didn't know a thing about wrestling or even care about it, as he did nothing but make terribly unfunny jokes that had nothing to do with the match or wrestling in general
It was so bad that they actually missed calling the pin fall in one of the matches. A taped match that they were dubbing over. And they left it like that.
It's like the producers were like "you know what? Anyone watching this DVD will have put this shit on mute by now thanks to this idiot, so lets just call it a day."

Pretty much any of the wrestler that wrestled in the WWF in the 70's that did commentary in the 80's was awful. Former jobber The Duke of Dorchester Pete Doherty was the exception. Fucking hilarious.

When I first heard Booker T on commentary, I contemplated suicide for at least two weeks, not wanting to exist in a world where that was happening.. Eventually though, I grew to love him for some reason. "MY BOY D-BRYAN!" sticks out to me for some reason. I kinda miss his ridiculousness, and I really do think it could have been Michael Cole's reactions to him that made it fun. Props to Cole for that.
I was too young to notice the intricacies of Savage's commentary when I first heard them, and it's been a while since I've re-watched a match with him at the table. I'll have to take a trip down memory lane soon.

Stevie Ray squeezed out some absolute turds like "fruit booty".

I loved the team of Michael Cole, Booker T and Josh Matthews. Granted, they all had their flaws, but when they were calling Smackdown, it felt as though they were really left to call their own stuff, and some of the stuff they were coming up with was more entertaining than anything going on in the ring.

This is not really in the same frame of discussion, but I felt really sorry for Ricardo Rodriguez when he was given like two weeks on Main Event. The guy can be fun on the mic (although we've never really heard him properly promo -- he just does the ring intro shtick), but he seemed so lost out there with Josh Mathews and The Miz. He'd be asked a question and you could just hear him either thinking or listening to what he's supposed to say over the headset. Then he'd just randomly start getting excited in Spanish, lol.

SmackDown commentary teams always seem to be the best for some reason. Even if it's one like Todd Grisham & Jim Ross.

Neither were great as commentators nor were the worst but give the slight nod to Booker T.
Savage might have been too deep into his "Macho Madness" character which is why a lot of times he barely made any sense. Either that or a lot of drugs considering the era he was in.
Booker T was pretty brutal for a while after returning with some of that being him new to all the changes and the other being him randomly saying stuff that didn't make sense even from his character's perspective.

another awful one was Paul Boesch.
Prior to running the Houston territory he wrestled in the 30s to the early 60s.
He is brutally awful to listen to on the Houston-Mid South footage. He often times mixed up names as well.

Wow I should learn to read...
How is "got to add moves to my repertoire" remotely dumb? Bobby Heenan would talk about wrestlers "taking notes" in WCW whenever a wrestler would walk out to watch another's match.

I enjoyed Madden's ridiculous justifications for the actions of the heels, although he does come across as very angry on his blog.

I didn't have a problem with him saying he wanted to add moves to his repertoire, it was how he said repertoire, he just sounded like an idiot, it was so ill timed. He was like "I'm gonna add some moves to my REPERTOIAAAAAAA" like pronounced the r as an a. He was just way too gimmicky to be a commentator.
