"All of Canada's 26 players have previous international experience and have won a total of 43 gold medals at World Juniors, Olympics or World Championships. In addition, three players captured the Canada Cup, which preceded the World Cup of Hockey."

"Canada's roster includes 14 players that won a gold medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, six (6) players that played for Team Canada at the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, six (6) players that won a gold medal at the 2004 Men's World Hockey Championship in Prague last week, and seven (7) players that won World Championship gold in 2003 in Finland. In total, Canada's roster accounts for 686 international games played in either the World Juniors, the Olympics, the World Championship or the Canada Cup/ World Cup of Hockey."

"Canada's roster also boasts eight current NHL captains (Doan, Iginla, Lemieux, Marleau, Niedermayer, Sakic, Thornton, Yzerman) and a total of seven alternate captains."

I'm surprised to see my hometown player Kirk Maltby made the team.
Hope that Super Mario will be good to go and lead the team. Overall, the team looks to have a great combination of veteran and youth players, offensive power, and grit with Maltby, Draper, etc.

That team looks awful large? Are some of them reserves or am I just looking at it wrong.

yeah probably not all of them will play. anyways kind of suprised at yzerman, gagne, being named and no primeau, murray, or nash. glad to see heatley on the team, they got to slowly start bfinging in some of the better younger players on there, guys who'll lead the team in the future (which is why i would've picked nash)

Gagne is awesome in international play. I saw him at the world Juniors in 1999 he was awesome there. He was also wicked in the olympics.

No Raycroft?

NICE ONE CANADA

Process of elimination :o

I would have rather had Theodore,Turco,Raycroft,Gigure over Belfour though.

if I were some of these canadian guys I would just become americans just so I could play in the world cup. Since canada's worst player is probably still better then america's best

canada could easily fill 2 awesome teams though

KleptoKlown
05-16-2004, 05:11 PM
Yeah, they could even fill 3 teams and win gold, silver and bronze.

Kinda glad bertuzzi wasnt named. Would have been nice to see him play, but he would have been the focus, and not the team.

Belfour didnt really need to be on the team. Brodeur will obviously be #1, Luongo #2. The should have taken another young guy, soak up some vet exp. Raycroft would have been perfect.

Really dissapointed they didnt bring Nash along. But like its been said before, Canada can easily fill 2 teams, so of course there are going to be deserving players left off. All the players that did make the team, deserved to make the team.

Brewer is a product of the PG Cougars, but with all due respect, I wouldn't put him on the team.

And Belfour may be oldish but he's been awesome all year and in the playoffs so he deserves to be there.

I understand why they didn't pick Bertuzzi. There would be too much drama and I think that players/coaches would be unconfortable with him in the dressing room.

I'm really glad they picked Redden and Regher. They deserve it. St. Louis and Iginla are going to be the best players IMO

Canada could have used Cheechoo and/or Morrison IMO too. Like we said, so much to chose from.

The thing with the Nash is that he pretty bad on defense and although he is crazy good on offense the guys they took have a better balance

05-16-2004, 07:46 PM
One could argue Nash should be there, because although his defensive aspects are weak, he'll be surrounded by others that can bail him out.

So fun to pick apart things from the armchair.

I bet it was. How many countries participate? Not taking the piss, but it's bound to be the USA, Canada, Russia and Finland.

before it was called the world cup, it was called the Canada cup.

The 1987 Canada Cup between Canada and the Soviet Union was arguably the greatest hockey ever played in the history of the sport.

Canada Roster

HEAD COACH
Mike Keenan

FORWARDS
Glenn Anderson / Kevin Dineen / Mike Gartner / Doug Gilmour / Wayne Gretzky / Michel Goulet / Dale Hawerchuk / Claude Lemieux / Mario Lemieux / Mark Messier / Brian Propp / Brent Sutter / Rick Tocchet

DEFENSEMEN
Ray Bourque / Paul Coffey / Doug Crossman / Craig Hartsburg / Larry Murphy / James Patrick / Normand Rochefort

GOALTENDERS
Grant Fuhr / Ron Hextall / Kelly Hrudey

The Soviets had Sergei Makarov, Vladimir Krutov, Valeri Kamensky, Slava Fetisov, Igor Larionov, etc.

All 3 games were 6-5, and Lemieux's series winning goal from Gretzky is one of the greatest moments in hockey history.

Canada, USSR, Sweden, Czech's, USA, Finland.

But in all fairness, it was a tourney for the Super Powers of hockey (Canada and the CCCP) to battle for supremacy of the ice war.

Except in '91 when the Soviets were dismantled and USA did well and lost to Canada in the final.

'76 Canada Cup - Canada
'81 Canada Cup - USSR
'84 Canada Cup - Canada
'87 Canada Cup - Canada
'91 Canada Cup - Canada

I thought Nash deserved to be on the team, but i understand why he was left off.

Hey, and whats with the Belfour hating? Belfour played great in the playoffs, and when he's in the zone he's nearly impossible to beat. Plus, he plays great on the Leafs and even I can admite the Leafs D isn't exactly anything to write home about. I think Belfour would be great behind this team. Of course Marty deserves to start, but I'm sure Eddie will be the back-up in case Marty pulls a Cujo in the first game. I think Luongo is just there to experience the tournament and likely wont see any time.

Should be fun, and hopefully its not the last hockey we get to see for some time.

they already said belfour will be number 3 behind Brodeur and Luongo... It's nothing against belfour, but why bring a third string who's been to the worlds and the olympics. It just doesn't make much sense when they could have brought a young goalie who will no doubt be there at the 2006 olympics and 2008 world cup.

also IMO Luongo could start infront of brodeur... I saw Luongo at the 99 world juniors and he was awesome then and he's only gotten better.

Did they really say that? If they did thats odd. Eddie should be #2, Roberto will get his chance down the line.

I would have no problem starting Luongo over either guy, but I think since Marty won the Gold, then he gets the opportunity to keep his job. Obviously if he faulters they should go to someone else, but he should get the chance to win.

I think just being on the roster will help Roberto get ready if and when he takes over as the #1 guy for Canada.
