I know details are scarce, but all I need to know is that its from Turtle Rock of L4D fame.

This is gonna be the bidness. (http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/07/evolve-first-gameplay-and-multiplayer-class-details-revealed)

Evolve is promising to offer a new kind of multiplayer experience. Clearly taking inspiration from its previous project, Evolve is a sci-fi multiplayer-focused shooter that will pit a four-player crew of alien hunters against a separate player controlled monster that increases in strength over a series of matches.

This should be very cool. L4D is one of the few games that forces co-op in a very elegant way.

Im curious if they'll give you the freedom to choose your evolution. It would be cool if they implemented RPGish elements such as a Borderlands type skill tree.

That's just me hoping I could evolve into a bad ass Xenomorph stalker.

The evolution might be linear, since you always end up as a huge almost Kaiju-like thing. But they did mention perks for the beast as well as the humans. I personally don't think the monster needs perks so much as special attacks. I also wonder if the monster player gets assist of any kind from smaller critters when he's still small.

Some info that was in the magazine article:

- There are separate characters within the classes, with different Equipment. For instance, all Medics have the ability to revive downed opponents, but only Val has a gun that can heal teammates from afar, and a sniper rifle that places a weakspot for teammates to hit on the monster.

-In addition to the monster, there is wildlife that can attack the hunters, such as giant venus flytraps. However there is also a lot of wildlife that can help the hunters. Small squirrel like animals that trumpet a noise when they see the monster, and birds that circle a fresh kill. Also a big dog like creature that is larger and deadlier than the monster's first form. It won't attack till provoked, so you can manipulate the situation in that the creature will attack the other player.

-If you are the monster, you will have 4 powers. You only get 2 at the start, but you get to pick which 2. You then get 1 more power each time you evolve. Your health also increases. At the start of the match, it's better to avoid the hunters, as they are much more powerful. By the time you reach your final form, the tables will be turned, and it's the hunters who have an uphill battle.

-There are different monsters, I'm assuming one for each stage in the game. Each with different powers and abilities. The one they've been showing is called Goliath. It can do a jumping smash attack, charge attack, breathe fire, and throw things. It resembles the tank in L4D. All monsters have a stealth attack, that is a one hit kill.

According to developer Turtle Rock, the game's development has been heavily influenced around DLC to the point they are planning on the game having the most DLC packs ever.

Turtle Rock co-founder Chris Ashton has some long term goals for Evolve, which includes supporting it with DLC "more so than any game ever before," he told OXM.

"You know, in Left 4 Dead we could make new environments, but we really didn't have a structure there to make new characters or zombie types, so we were pretty limited on what we could do, DLC-wise. But with Evolve... we made these modular pieces - the way the whole game fits together means we can make new maps, new environment types, new wildlife, new monsters and hunters, and all of that stuff just plugs into the game."

They did hint they won't just be going overboard with releasing DLC packs and the community will still play a big role in how those plans are done.

"We're definitely looking to see how the community reacts," Ashton said. "It's designed to have a long life - hopefully that works and we get to try a bunch of crazy things with the community after release. As long as people are into it and the DLC does reasonably well, then we'd like to keep making more. At the end of the day, it's a business and it has to make sense, but we believe that we've built a game that does support that really well - more so than any game ever before."

Alpha for the PS4 got postponed and might occur at a later date. The official reason due to the recent PS4 2.0 firmware update causing some last minute problems with the alpha's build.

Got 4 games in before a series of wankers decided to keep quitting just before the matches begin. Love the maps, but being Markov each time showed me the character is a bit overpowered. Next up, the monster :)

I was all set to buy this for full price but the darned DLC strategy changed my mind. I will still play the Beta today and decide. The game does look good in 4k based on the Alpha from last year.

Fignuts
01-17-2015, 10:59 AM
The DLC plan doesn't bother me much, since it's not a case of on disc DLC, or cutting off stuff that's complete just to make money on it later. The new maps and modes are also free, which is cool.

I will say that $15 is pretty fucking steep for one monster.

VSG
01-17-2015, 12:13 PM
They said that the gameplay will keep "evolving" with DLC hunters, monsters and so forth. Being able to play alongside locked characters doesn't really solve the issue. If DLC didn't affect actual gameplay, I am pretty ok with it.

No evacuation mode in beta though, I was hoping to get a good round in. The game does look more polished, although the intro segments seem slightly broken if subtitles are on.

Fignuts
01-17-2015, 12:47 PM
Evacuation is unlocked in the Beta today, apparently.

And the DLC doesn't really affect gameplay, because despite playing with DLC characters and monsters you don't have, it's all still balanced according to the devs. They aren't making the DLC content any more powerful than the on disc stuff. SO it's not like it's "pay to win" or anything.

Kalyx triaD
01-17-2015, 02:45 PM
I read up on this DLC fiasco and I simply do not see what the issue is. It's one of the reasonable set-ups in recent memory.

Until I see people react positively to DLC that isn't free, I think they're posturing the rest of the time. Dudes saying they don't want the game anymore based on DLC is just weird.

VSG
01-17-2015, 03:04 PM
Don't get me wrong- I will still get the game, just not probably a day 1 purchase at this point until I see for myself if the DLC is a drastic change to gameplay. Probably just a case of being cautious for the sake of it though.

Kalyx triaD
01-17-2015, 03:06 PM
The devs themselves have said that it doesn't affect gameplay. Now I don't have a core interest in what you buy day 1 but this particular thing has been settled.

VSG
01-17-2015, 07:24 PM
People have been interpreting this wrong then?

http://au.ibtimes.com/articles/579427/20150116/evolve-2k-games-turtlerock-studios-dlc-pc.htm#.VLr8pEfF98E

This followed the announcement that "Evolve" will be a title that is built to transform and improve through DLCs. This means that, instead of the usual more minor add-ons that gamers have associated with additional expansions, there will be more gameplay experiences coming with "Evolve" DLCs.

Legit question, I've seen a lot of articles all over the place on this but this one seems to be what is quoted around the most.

Fignuts
01-17-2015, 08:38 PM
Yes, they are.

"Gameplay experiences"

Key word: experiences. The actual gameplay will remain the same. There will be new modes available, but those will be free of charge. New Monsters and Hunters will have new abilities which might change how you play a match, but the basic gameplay will remain the same.

Don't know what massive gameplay changes you and everyone else are expecting from DLC, but as long as it stays balanced, I don't see any problems.

It's not overflowing with content, ala Dragon Age, but it's got enough for a full price purchase, at least for me.

I'm on the fence. It's fun certainly, but I worry about how much replay-ability it will offer.

alvarado52

I think that mostly depends on how many pals will play. I'll likely be getting it anyway, as I know at least a couple other pals grabbing it.

I am on the fence right now. I missed playing with anyone here due to timing :(

I reeeeeeeeeeeeeeally enjoyed the hunter and became rather proficient with the class. Had a ton of fun playing both sides, though I found it much harder as the monster. Granted, I could have played the tutorial a few more times to get it down, but didn't want to waste time there.

Never could get into an Evacuation game, really wanted to give that a go.

How come System Requirements says my video card isn't good enough but it matches all of the required stats they list?

Minimum: AMD Radeon 5770 / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 or higher
You Have: AMD Radeon HD 6530D Graphics

Features: Minimum attributes of your Video Card
Required You Have
Icon Pixel Shader version 5.0 5.0
Icon Vertex Shader version 5.0 5.0
Icon Dedicated Video RAM 512 MB 512 MB

VSG
01-19-2015, 12:23 PM
The 5770 is a discrete GPU, your 6350D is integrated graphics with the processor. The higher number isn't always better, especially if the second number is much lower. So in this case, the integrated GPU you have is lower in compute power than the ones in the minimum specs.

Game requires a Day One patch to be downloaded in order to be playable. Patch mostly contains tweaks and optimization done since the beta but wasn't mentioned how large the patch will be in size.

Will also be getting around $60 worth of DLC content at launch in the form of character skins with 3 exclusive to Season Pass owners.
