This is a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 3 which is set to include Captain America 3 (pretty much confirmed), Thor 3 (confirmed), Dr. Strange (extremely likely), Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D Season 3 (unconfirmed), and ultimately Avengers 3 (confirmed).

Is Antman actually any good? Seems like a pretty shite guy to have around when you've got Hulk, Thor etc. Captain America seemed lame enough compared to them, can't see how a guy who can shrink will be anything other than comic relief.

Ant-Man, and also The Atom on the DC side, have proved on several occasions to be very useful. I mean I get you, I think size changing is just stupid and I never liked it as a superhero concept - but the comics do present them as useful and even formidable on occasion.

Seems dumb to have an Ant-Man movie and not have Hank Pym, the most "well known" Ant-Man be Ant-Man in it.

Surely they'll have flashbacks of him doing Ant-Man things, maybe he was involved with the original SHIELD as well (likely met Howard Stark too). But the younger guy with a habit of elaborate heists is just more 'Hollywood', really.

The name alone will be an issue with the mainstream. And sure he can be useful, but phase three in a battle with thanos is a bit late in the game to bring him in as any real interesting addition.

How is Phase 3 late in the game? By that logic you're saying not to introduce any new characters in Phase 3 and just have sequels. Do you like Dr. Strange at all?

Thinking about this now, I like the idea of a "legacy hero" movie. It is something we haven't really seen yet.
You'd think DC would be all about "legacy hero" movies, since they have/had so many legacy heroes. They should make a Starman movie/movies.

He's talking about the escalation of the threat the Avengers face, and how Ant-man compares to that threat. He's not talking about new characters in general.
That said, I've read Avengers for years, and Ant-man has been useful plenty of times.
That video that was released a while ago also showed how good the character could be in combat.
I am glad that Edgar Wright is directing the movie. I am also glad that Paul Rudd is going to be Ant-Man as he is one of my favourite actors of all time.
My knowledge about Ant-Man is limited to The Ultimates series (Hank Pym when he was married to the Wasp).

You get me. This is correct. I wasa few drinks in and not as eloquent as you.
I just think to a mass-casual audience the escalation and addition of "space Aliens" and other worldly gods and people with the most amazing super powers, Ant Man will not really stand out or make sense.
Instead if like Antman was around in the first film and still be around in the 3rd Avengers it would fit better than bringing him into his own film then showing up in Avengers 3.
Have no reason to think the film makers will flub it, but I have that concern with this character transitioning to the masses.
Was telling my wife about it and all she could come back with was "why antman how stupid, couldnt the hulk just smush him?"

Nope.
I can see the media outlets calling it the superhero movie that burst the genres bubble. The Green Lantern had the mainstream rolling its eyes and I heard "Now they're really scraping the barrel!" when it was being discussed on tv. A serious action movie called Antman will probably get the same reaction or worse.
Kalyx triaD
06-23-2014, 04:18 AM
Green Lantern didn't suck because they were scraping the barrel (and who says that, GL is hella popular), that movie sucked because it sucked as a movie.
I guess yet again we have to bring up the Iron Man example of how a good movie can turn a lesser known hero into something big. The best movie arguably in the MCU is Cap 2, and NOBODY thought that would be the case after Avengers and IM3.

Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.
Also John Slattery is in there, we may remember him as 'old' Howard Stark from Iron Man 2.

Evangeline Lilly's character (Janet Van Dye's daughter), is essentially the MCU's Janet proper. So while it won't be in the origin story, she is totally our Wasp.

You say this solely based on those pics that came out showing her haircut?
Kalyx triaD
08-21-2014, 03:56 PM
I've had my thoughts about it the moment she was cast, no way Marvel would get her to be 'the girlfriend'. With classic Janet dead by the start of the movie, I figure they'd work around that by making the daughter Wasp herself, while the classic Hank and Jan adventures would be seen in Agent Carter's series. Just musing to myself.
Then the haircut came out, and I'm about certain now.

I'm....not totally happy with this but I'm not going to bitch as the track record the MCU has with making female characters awesome is more hits then misses. So while we won't have Jan, I'm glad we've got a Wasp.

Yeah, as a fan I'm pretty okay with this. In fact I think I'd be bothered more if it was Janet, and they made her Lang's girlfriend. Think it's more important to acknowledge the Hank/Janet relationship than to have Janet in the costume.

We all, I think, signed on very enthusiastically with Edgar [Wright, original director]. We were excited to work with Edgar. We were fans of Edgar. So when the split happened, I was in the fortunate position where I had not signed my contract yet. So I had the choice to walk away, and I almost did. Because I thought, Well, if it’s because Marvel are big bullies, and they just want a puppet and not someone with a vision, I’m not interested in being in this movie. Which is what I was afraid of.
I finally got the script literally the day before I was supposed to go in for fittings…I saw with my own eyes that Marvel had just pulled the script into their world. I mean, they’ve established a universe, and everyone has come to expect a certain aesthetic [and] a certain feel for Marvel films. And what Edgar was creating was much more in the Edgar Wright camp of films. They were very different. And I feel like, if [Marvel] had created Edgar’s incredible vision — which would have been, like, classic comic book — it would have been such a riot to film [and] it would have been so much fun to watch. [But] it wouldn’t have fit in the Marvel Universe. It would have stuck out like a sore thumb, no matter how good it was. It just would have taken you away from this cohesive universe they’re trying to create. And therefore it ruins the suspended disbelief that they’ve built.
I suspected that he left because his vision was outdated with the MCU style and world building since he started so long ago.

I found it very funny at times. Michael Peña's character was great and the running joke of him relaying stories overdubbing other people worked really well. It worked a lot better than the cringeworthy running joke of Captain America not swearing from AOU. Paul Rudd was on form, and the final battle was a brilliant mix between action and comedy.
I guess being drunk may have skewed my opinion a little, but for me it was probably just behind Guardians and Avengers in terms of comedy.

I saw this yesterday. I really enjoyed it. I liked that they told a smaller (no pun intended) story that didn't need to have end-of-the-world consequences. Yeah, if HYDRA had the Yellowjacket suit, that would have been pretty bad, but there were no flying cities or alien invasions. It was just a guy trying to steal a suit. It was funny, exciting, and it set the stage for Civil War without being ABOUT setting the stage for Civil War.
In terms of the MCU pantheon, it falls somewhere in the middle for me, but it was still a really entertaining way to spend and afternoon.
I liked it a lot. I don't know the inside stuff as far as the comics, but i'm guessing Pyms wife eventually comes back considering they never showed a face of her, not even in the picture of him and her that he looked at. I could be wrong.
I loved the fight between Ant-man and Falcon.

Happy some of the Hollywood old guard are lending their star power to some of these superhero flicks. It's like a totally different flick with them in it. Michael Caine in The Dark Knight trilogy, Robert Redford in Winter Soldier, and now Michael Douglas in Ant Man.
Absolutely loved it. Way different than most of the MCU films but fun nonetheless.
Thomas the Tank Engine rocked.
