No team in the entire league has more wins than the Cowboys and it still might not be enough to keep them from being on the outside looking in in the playoff race at the end of the day. Crazy. They could literally have the best record in football and not be a playoff team "if the playoffs started today".

One of the most frustrating things is when a 5.5 point underdog kicks a field goal at the last second then loses by a touchdown in overtime.

Yeah. Baltimore is 4-5 in the conference, Pittsburgh is 7-3. So if it comes down to the two of them for the final spot, Baltimore is fucked.

How do the Steelers have the playoff spot over the Ravens since they split head to head? Don't know how tiebreakers work.

Right now its Steelers 3-2 division record > Ravens 2-3

Steelers play the Bengals in Pittsburgh week 17 when the Ravens play the Browns so they could both end up 3-3.

The Conference record is 7-3 vs 4-5, however the Ravens last 3 games (jags,Texans, browns) are all conference. Steelers play the Chiefs in addition to the Bengals. Dont really see how that could be tied and matter, if the Ravens win out to get 7 conference wins they'd finish w/ better record if Steelers lose their 2 conference games.

The way I see it, the Ravens are winning out to go to 11-5. Steelers will probably win their next two to be 10-5 going into week 17 vs Bengals. Bengals will lose to the Broncos in two weeks, so they have to beat the Browns next week to stay in it. If they win they'll be 9-5-1 going into the Steeler game. So Ravens would win the division if the Bengals win and the Bengals would be ahead of the Steelers for wild card purposes. if the Steelers win they win the division and the Ravens are ahead of the Bengals for wild cards. If the Bengals lose their next two then they have like no chance of making the playoffs no matter what they do vs the Steelers.

Interesting note is that most scenarios I have checked out have the two AFC north teams being 4/5 seeds provided the Chargers lose tonight. A chargers win puts them in the drivers seat for the #5 seed wild card even with a broncos game upcoming. The 49ers game looks less daunting now as well as the chiefs.

Emperor Smeat

Mariota seems to be nearly a 100% lock for the top pick at this point. The Titans or Bucs would take him in a heartbeat, certainly.

If the Raiders or Jags wound up with the top pick, they'd probably trade down just because Mariota would have enough value for teams to give up 2 first rounders. Depending on how it shakes out you could even see something like, say, the Titans trading up from #3 to #1, leapfrogging the Bucs at #2.

The Packers are in with a win and Dallas loss.

Broncos, Patriots, and Colts all clinch their respective divisions with wins. Actually Denver and New England could lock up the first round byes if the Colts, Bengals, and Steelers all lose.

I'm starting to feel a lot better about week 17 now.

Assuming both teams take care of business next week (GB @ TB, DET @ CHI), week 17 will be for the division. I don't know what the tiebreaker is between DAL/PHI but there's a chance that whoever wins that game will be the #2 seed. So there's a chance we either have a first-round bye, or have to travel to the NFC South winner for the first round (or probably other scenarios too but w/e)... could be in a worse spot

Evil Vito
12-15-2014, 08:34 AM
Yeah Lions/Packers seems like close to a lock to be the Sunday Night game in week 17 as it figures to have direct correlation to division winner.

Then again Bengals/Steelers could wind up being a win or go home game so if it comes to that NBC may favor that over two teams already locked into the playoffs and just playing for seeding.

Atlanta/Carolina could also be win or go home but nobody wants to watch that garbage.

12-15-2014, 08:51 AM
Yeah they've made week 17 all divisional for like 4 or 5 years now. And they don't name the Sunday night game until all week 16 games have been played so they can stick the game with the most direct playoff playoff implications on.

That led to Dallas losing in primetime to each of their divisional rivals 3 years in a row in the NFC East deciding game. And the year before that was Seattle winning their division at 7-9 lol.

Also this is my feeling (http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/machine/_/factor/wins/results/400554356~1~400554444~1~400554434~2~400554441~1~400554413~1~400554411~1~400554447~2~400554404~1~4005 54406~2~400554446~1~400554409~2) on how the playoffs will shake out. Ravens win the Division, Chiefs get a wildcard and the winner of Steelers/Bengals is in, loser is out.

Being in a fight for the NFC South division title is worse than being... say... the Oakland Raiders in some ways. At least everyone just kinda forgets the Raiders exist. The NFC South teams have a huge spotlight on how shitty they are every week.

Sucks we're in the AFC East, against 3 northern teams, and usually have to play them in December up there.

In March the owners will be voting to expand the playoffs from 12 teams to 14 as well as changing playoff seedings. The proposed seedings would be: 1 seed gets a bye, 2 and 3 seeds are division winners with the next highest record/tiebreakers, and the fourth division winner will be guaranteed a playoff spot but seeds 4-7 will be based on record/tiebreakers. So for example, this year the NFC South winner would be the 7th seed and have to play the #2 seed on the road in Wild Card weekend.

The thinking seems to be that it's extremely rare for a wild card team to have a better record than the 3 seed, but the 5 seed has had a better record than the 4 seed pretty frequently. And of course years like 2010 and this year where both wild cards are better than the 4 seed.

I dunno. I'm a believer that if you win your division, you should not only make the playoffs but get a home playoff game. If the wild card team can't go on the road and beat an inferior opponent, they don't deserve to advance. Although it's fun to joke about it's never really bothered me that a bad division can produce a bad playoff team. In 2010 my 10-6 Giants stayed home while the 7-9 Seahawks got in. That's just the breaks.

Would be happy with 14 playoff teams though. It's still less than half the league, makes the 1 seed that much more important, and would make that first weekend of the playoffs extra fun.

49ers released Ray McDonald with the reason due to him being in legal trouble again. Also is likely facing a suspension due to the new NFL conduct rules.

Earlier in the day, local law authorities said they were investigating McDonald on suspicion of sexual assault.

San Jose Police Department Sgt. Heather Randol said an area hospital notified police late Tuesday night that a woman was seeking treatment and that detectives had searched McDonald's San Jose home.

"The victim alleged she was possibly sexually assaulted a day prior," Randol said. "Based on preliminary investigation, detectives secured a search warrant and served it at the alleged suspect's residence in San Jose."

No arrests have been made, nor have charges been filed.

Have two play in games for the two Wild card spots. It's not possible to have a fair conference way to do things when so much of your season is played in your division. To be fair conference record should be the thing that lines up your teams in the seeding not overall record. They'll never do that.

have 4 instead of 2

wc 1 vs. wc 4
wc 2 vs. wc 3

The two winners are the real wild card current teams and are put in to face the 2 divisional seeds 3 and 4.

It gives the divisional winners a bye and the top seeds two weeks off. It also punishes teams for being non-divisional winners making the divisional races more important.

The Bengals are in worse shape. They have to win either vs Denver or in Pittsburgh. Considering the Steelers beat them 2 weeks ago 42-21 im not liking their chances next week.

They might have a shot vs Denver at home but Andy Dalton has a lousy record (http://espn.go.com/blog/cincinnati-bengals/post/_/id/14404/bengals-andy-dalton-primetime-marvin-lewis-woes-extend-beyond)in primetime games (0-2 this year, 2-6 career) and NBC could flex the Pittsburgh game too.

If they win both or only win next week and the Ravens win and Sd loses the Ravens play the bengals and the steelers play the colts.
If the bengals win tomorrow but lose next week and the Ravens win and SD loses the Ravens play the steelers and the Bengals play the Colts.

If the bengals lose both the Ravens are in no matter what SD does and the bengals would be out if sd wins

Bengals would play the steelers again the following week if they lose both, ravens win, sd loses the Ravens play the colts or if SD wins they play the Colts and the Ravens play the Steelers.

I almost want to see Cincinnati win next week and the Broncos get beat by oakland. Ravens would play Denver in the wild card game. Otherwise if the Ravens do get in they face whoever wins the division.

You want the Ravens to play the Broncos? Are you high?

Putting the blame on yesterday's loss on Lisa Salters. Dropped the stat before the game that Peyton is 22-1 against the AFC North. Best record of any QB against a division. When you say something like that, said QB is obviously gonna lose the game.

Road to the Super Bowl goes through Foxboro. Unless someone pulls the ultimate shocker and beats the Pats at home, highly unlikely Broncos go back to the game.

Couldn't find the audio clip from "I am America! And So can You!" I always scream this when somebody throws a pick against the Pats.

Browns called up Rex "I started in a Superbowl you know" Grossman to see if he wanted the start on Sunday. He said nope, I'm good, family is in for the holidays.

If they lose to the Raiders they will have lost two in a row with Peyton looking like garbage for the last couple of weeks. The two things the Ravens do well on defense (stop the run, pressure on qb) was basically how the bengals won last night. The Broncos have been able to cover up whatever the hell is wrong with Manning with their run game since the Rams loss. The bengals stopped the run last night (86 yards) which was a bit more than half what they were averaging (145) since the Rams game.

What do you think of the 49ers firing Harbaugh?

What do you think of the 49ers firing Harbaugh?

To my knowledge, he hasn't been fired. And if he is I think it's top choice bullshit. Four seasons, three NFC Title games, and one Superbowl appearance. Dude knows how to win. One bad season is not grounds for firing in my (not so humble) opinion.

On that note, I also firmly stand behind Kaepernick. Things will be worked on and adjustments will be made. He will become more comfortable making his progressions and will hopefully re-establish his ground game. Meanwhile, that overrated asshole Michael Crabtree better show up to camp and work on making easy catches. We're called the "faithful" for a reason. It's one time I don't mind subscribing to the idea of faith.

The team was plagued by distraction this season. And there were so many issues when it came to clock and game management. Also, play calling at times was atrocious. We'll work it out. There are bright spots to be built upon for sure.
