#1-norm-fan
03-27-2014, 03:00 AM
At least they were smart enough to keep that one from actually closing out the show. If we're counting just title matches/matches that were billed as a main event despite not closing out the show, Triple H vs Booker probably is #1.
My God. Outside of The Undertaker, who is a sure thing to put on a great WrestleMania match with anyone nowadays, Triple H's WrestleMania track record is fucking abysmal.

Miz/Cena say yo
#1-norm-fan
03-27-2014, 03:08 AM
I think Miz vs Cena was slightly more memorable than HHH vs Booker, HHH vs Orton and HHH vs Jericho simply because The Rock was involved.
Hogan vs Sid is probably a contender too but that has the handicap of having happened 22 years ago.

I always go back to this when people talk about how Daniel Bryan is treated and if he wins at Mania it won't undo the 7 months of pure torture the fans went through. Everyone remembers the match of Rock vs. Hogan, no one talks about Hogan hitting Rock with a hammer then trying to commit vehicular homicide.

Haven't had much time to make a dent in my chronological order viewing, but have made it through Starrcade '83, 84 and Wrestlemania 1. Next up is The Wrestling Classic followed by Starrcade '85.
Really digging the 80's stuff, surprisingly. I have the Manias on DVD up through 14, but it's been a while since I've seen them.
Really looking forward to the Summerslams, Rumbles, Survivor Series I haven't seen and a lot of the In Your House stuff, and most everything with the NWA/WCW stuff on the horizon. Good and bad.
I know these Legends of Wrestling on the Network are a few years old but they're new to me and they're great. Hope they make new ones soon.

Ernest Miller pinned Norman Smiley (5:04).
Rick Steiner NC Scott Steiner (5:30).

Just started Starrcade '85. First match is Sam Houston vs. Krusher Khruschev. Crowd is dead and the match kinda sucks.
But my biggest issue so far is replacing Gordon Solie with Tony Schiavone. Apparently he didn't just get worse by the time he commentated Nitro, he's just always sucked. Jesus, there's a lot of dead air during this match.
Any reason why Solie wasn't used here? Is it Schiavone from here on out? Only the first match is over and the entire event feels dead compared to Starrcade 83/84.

It's creepy how much Lenny Lane looks like Jericho. Also, Lodi is hilarious. Lenny Lane defended his Cruiserweight Title against Kaz Hayashi in a good little match.
The Revolution vs Nasty Boys/Hugh Morrus up next. Video package was weaksauce.

This match exceeded my expectations in the first 5 minutes. It is Malenko/Douglas vs Knobbs/Morris. Saggs and Benoit are not around. Jimmy Hart is managing Morrus and the Nasty Boys. They are known as "The First Family".

Berlyn vs ???
Originally scheduled to face Buff Bagwell, but the WCW Championship Committee has told Tony Schiovanie that Buff Bagwell has yet to arrive at the arena. An unknown superstar has stepped up to challenge Berlyn in his WCW wrestling debut.

Duggan has this white-hot crowd in Winston-Salem, North Carolina chanting USA like their lives depend on it...and in a unique way it does due to their belief in the unstoppable heart and incomparable spirit of "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan.

Barry & Kendall Windham (w/ Curt Hennig) vs Harlem Heat for the WCW World Tag Team Titles.
Pretty good match. Stevie Ray is wearing his old 1995 Harlem Heat tights though. Booker T is rocking his full shiny silver tights.

Weird. During the main event of Starrcade 86, after Flair enters, it randomly cuts to this tribute video of Magnum T.A. running on the beach where he meets up with some old lady (possibly his mom?) and there's really cheesy music playing over it. Then it cuts back to Nikita Koloff's entrance.
I know this was after Magnum's career-ending accident, but it was just so random with none of the announcers acknowledging it before or after.

Bash at the Beach 96'
Watching it for the Hogan turn but I was surprised how good the rest of the PPV was.
Mysterio vs Psicosis opener was obviously great, but man...forgot just how amazing early Mysterio was. The spots themselves are fantastic, but even more impressive is the smoothness in which they're executed. Just looks sooooo good. Only downside is that it predictably ends like every Rey/Psicosis match ever: Splash Mountain reversed into hurricanrana. You'd think two guys who innovate so much in their match, would be able to think of a different finish once in a while.
Also, Psicosis is literally insane. Dude did a senton splash from the top rope to the floor. And Rey is insane for taking it.
Big Bubba vs John Tenta -Sack of silver dollars on a pole match.
This surprised the shit out of me. On paper it looks like a train wreck, but they actually put on a really entertaining match. It's no 5-star classic, but it tells a good story and has a good ending.
Disco Inferno vs Dean Malenko
Another surprise. Disco Inferno was still a huge joke at this point, and it looks like it's going to be a squash, but Disco gets serious and starts putting up a good fight. Ends up being a pretty good match.
Steve Mongo McMicheal vs some guy
This was like Mongo's second or third match, so he's terrible. Guy he's wrestling ain't much better.
Benoit and Arn vs Sullivan and Giant
Giant is green at this point, but the rest of the participants make it great.
There's a few other matches that aren't amazing but are still pretty good. Konnan vs Flair was pretty good.
Hogan turn is phenomenal.
All in all, a really solid PPV.
