at souled out 2000, management decides to put the title on benoit beating Sid and the next day benoit forfeits the belt and leaves for wwf. was there a backstory to this about management's thought process? was the title reign an effort to get him to stay? wouldn't they have known his contract was up and it was a risky move? or was it more WCW's outlook that hot title changes were the way to get viewers?

I could be wrong, but if I remember right I think the issue was more about WCW being interested in keeping Chris Benoit around in spite of him not being happy, and not giving a shit about other people on the roster. They threw the belt at him to get him to stay, but then was just going to job him out (making absolutely ZERO sense- putting the strap on the guy as inscentive to stay only to have him lose it straightaway). That was "final straw" territory, and a couple of his friends went with him to Titan Towers in what I assume was half show of solidarity and half "take this job and shove it" to whoever was in charge at Turner at the time. Thus, "The Radicalz" showing up on RAW nWo style.

Benoit was going to beat Sid and then run a gauntlet on Nitro, but he saw it for what it was.

On a related note, I HOPE that something like this doesn't happen to Daniel Bryan (in the sense that he gets the belt at WM 30 then either the next night OR within the week after Wrestle Mania 30 he loses said belt).

Oh, you mean like with Christian?

No, Christian was only given the title because it wasn't time for Del Rio to be champion. It was the perfect spot to give Edge's buddy a title and keep it away from the rookie until he was more ready. Christian wasn't a long time plan like Daniel Bryan is.

Del Rio wasn't a rookie.
