View Full Version : What old PPVs would you want to see revived?

Seeing as WWE now owns all the naming rights there's potential to bring back some of the old Ppvs like they did with the Great American Bash.

Personally I'd love to see Starrcade revived given it's history as the WCW answer to Wrestlemania.

Would like to see the War Games matches revived but I doubt it will happen in this PG era, the World War 3 match. I recall in some poll on wwe.com a while back fans voted in favour of Bash at the Beach being revived but it's too similar to Summerslam.

Oh and King of the Ring tournament too.

But say in theory they brought back Starrcade what would be axed in favour of it and where would it go on the calendar? December like before? Meaning we would ditch Vengence?

Bring back Great American Bash again. That is the only PPV name that still feels like a good name. Starrcade could be interesting if WWE treated it like a big deal, and having it be the final PPV of the year/last PPV before the Road to WrestleMania would set up some nice things.

But then does it not become a problem with Survivor Series and Royal Rumble in close proximity on the calendar both of which considered marquee events?

Frankly I feel the Survivor Series has lost its shine in recent times and has been perhaps superseded by Night of Champions. But IMO every title SHOULD be defended on Wrestlemania.

They could bring a war games or world war 3 match back for extreme rules. Ditch the money in the bank ppv but retain the matches.

It is about time the Ppvs got a rebranding.

There should be one ring, singular. Never was a fan of having more than one wrestling ring out at a time.

So now that I've eliminated one from WCW, I want to say King Of The Ring, but let's put the King Of The Ring semi-finals and finals on Summer Slam. Give it a little something extra so SummerSlam is not just WrestleMania Jr.

Now with two gone, gonna agree with Damn Inator. Cyber Sunday. WWE is pushing the app, the network, and twitter so much that it makes sense. The only thing is WWE has to be careful with how they book it. "So who gets the title shot? John Cena got 32 percent of the vote, Randy Orton got 12 percent of the vote, and with the fucking rest of the votes is Zack Ryder!"

04-16-2014, 07:49 PM
Yeah, I was thinking that myself. They've got to be more careful that the voting options aren't so ridiculous that they seem rigged.

I'd do...

Royal Rumble
Elimination Chamber
Wrestlemania
Extreme Rules
Cyber Sunday
The Great American Bash
Money in the Bank
Summerslam
Night of Champions
Halloween Havoc
Starcade
Tables, Ladders, and Chairs

Survivor Series is dead, Starcade would be better.

I'm just going to rip off Fragile X instead of saying why WWE Presents: Starcade is a terrible idea... long story short- too many people will piss and moan that it's not a WCW themed ppv.

How I would set it up...

Royal Rumble (duh)
Elimination Chamber (dunno why, two gimmick based ppvs back to back before Mania is a good idea)
WrestleMania (duh)
Backlash (always liked the idea of a "revenge" themed ppv after Mania)
Money In The Bank (to have a the winner tease for two PPVs before SummerSlam)
Extreme Rules (possible set up for a title match at Night of Champions)
Night of Champions (duh)
SummerSlam (with KoTR semi finals and finals being a yearly highlight)
In Your House (An unofficial "retro themed" ppv featuring legends and the old school logo)
Survivor Series (Why? TRADITION!)
Cyber Sunday (Just gotta be careful with the polls)
Over The Edge (Filler)

No TLC. They can put on a TLC match at Extreme Rules, Money In The Bank, or an option for Cyber Sunday. They kinda killed it for me with a "chairs" match.

when they did revive the Bash they fucked it up.

I'd love to see Fall Brawl War Games revived. Starrcade would be a great option too.

Wouldn't use Starcade. 13 years removed from the demise of WCW I don't think the name has all that much value. You'd just be tacking on a name to an otherwise generic PPV.

I get the Americana theme of the Bash but again it doesn't add anything to the match setup outside of a red, white and blue theme.

King of the Ring would be pretty good providing they use it as a launching pad for someone. Wouldn't mind them doing the preliminary rounds on the show as they've a number of guys on the roster than go on multiple times in a night.

I'd also be interested in Halloween Havoc. Such an easy theme to pull off at the end of October. You could have cameos from guys like Boogeyman and Papa Shango. Taker could even have a match here. Do a Halloween Battle Royal where all the lowcard guys dress up. Or a lumberjack match where the ring is surrounded by ravenous zombies. The best part? It'd replace the incredibly forced Hell In A Cell PPV that devalues the match type. You could even retain the ME as a HiaC match if you wanted.

They also need to make Survivor Series a big deal again. Give it a blockbuster title match and some well built traditional SS matches.

Great American Bash during the Crockett era was built up to be a huge deal.

They would tour all across the country and call it the Great American Bash tour during the summer.

They'd give you some amazing cards featuring ppv caliber matches. Some of the shows were held in stadiums.

1988 and 1989 were the years they did a ppv version on the last stop IIRC.

I think if WWE built it up big it has a possibility of being a great PPV.

Except why would anyone outside the US care? And it's still just got a red, white and blue theme, you've literally changed nothing from reading XLs post, just gave us a brief Wikipedia history report.

The same reason they care about every other WWE PPV -- the product is exciting as fuck. It is stupid to think international buys would be hurt all that much by calling a PPV "The Great American Bash". Do international ratings take a dive whenever they do video packages on U.S. holidays?

Cool King

I'm not entirely sure, but I think Tribute To The Troops does pretty badly outside of the US when it comes to ratings.

Then again, it's not really "canon" to what's going on in the WWE? Or is it? I don't know, as I never watch Tribute To The Troops, if I'm being honest.

I guess it's difficult for us non-US guys to get behind the whole Americana theme but I doubt it affects buys. Again, I don't think the Red, White & Blue theme adds anything in terms of concept. Would Americans buy it because it's so patriotic?

Same deal with Starrcade. By all means you can use the name, even claim that it would draw buys from the old WCW fans that have long tuned out (though I don't think it would) and pump out an awesome video package highlighting why it was the answer to Mania for WCW. I just don't think it will have the desired effect. If the IWC accounts for 10% of the audience then old WCW fans probably account for 1% of that.

I'd like to see them bring back the No Way Out name. I used to hate the Elimination Chamber PPV but I've grown to accept it. Still, using the No Way Out name means they don't have to use the Elimination Chamber if the story doesn't dictate it. If you don't go with Halloween Havoc in October you could always use No Way Out in place of Hell In A Cell.

It just seems pointless to me to use a name that while it probably wouldn't alienate anyone it certainly wouldn't make anyone give a fuck either. If anything it seems like a step backwards. But any name that doesn't impose a forced gimmick match as a result, looking at you HIAC, wouldn't go amiss. Unless it's BattleBowl.

From what perspective? The in-ring stuff would be awful with the clapped out guys you named there. In fact, is there anybody outside of Jericho that is a "WCW guy" that can still go?

Mysterio's knees are shot and he can't stay healthy.
Benoit and Guerrero are dead.
Sting is unfortunately past it.
Likewise for Flair, Hall, Nash, Foley, Steiner, etc.
Goldberg hasn't been in a ring for a decade.

I get that there are nostalgia nuts like Seth, who's mantra is Past > Present but I think they make up such a small number now. At some point you need to let go.

If they couldn't launch anything off the back of the WCW brand back in 2001 when they first got hold of the property you can bet they'd struggle to do it now.

How about In Your House?
I think the name is old enough now to be a "retro" ppv. Just say that WWE invites various Legends and Hall of Famers back for another ppv. Set it up where a legend is in every match somehow. Be it a guest ref, a manager to even out the odds, or even in the ring. Let Mene Gene do backstage interviews, have The Fink do all the announcing, and make it look "old school."
