Posted this the other day in the 10k+1 thread, but there's something about this that was noteworthy that I thought about today that warrants its own thread.

If fans knew that the ring attendant was Mel Phillips, a sick fuck with a thing for little boys' feet, Terry might have come out of that beatdown as a face.
That said, after his introduction, he was mildly hated. After beating the shit out of Mel Phillips for the unpardonable sin of putting on his hat, he had the fucking NUCLEAR HEATZ! with the crowd. How much heat, you ask? His opponent's brief comeback made the crowd go wild. And he was a jobber.
In essence, what did you like about the video, maybe post your own favorite epic heel moments, and perhaps discuss something that you'd like some of the heels of today to do to get massively hated.

Really wish they would have ran with this. Henry was on a roll at that time and I believe he could have capitalized in a big way from the heat generated this night. I bought into it and thought he was legit retiring, speaking about his family and such, he did an awesome job.

There is no such thing as heat anymore. People are too smart to the business. If you listen to some of the older wrestlers on various podcasts floating around, some of the heels back then had to rely on the baby faces to keep them safe from the crowds, or had to get to the back fast, and leave the arena out of fear they would be jumped or beaten by fans later in the night because they had so much heat. That stuff cannot be duplicated anymore.

It kind of hurts that the guy who acts like the biggest heel in the WWE is John Cena.
I really believe the last actual heel was Edge.
It's truly a shame that we don't see guys who do horrible things to get hated. The Funk assault established him as a bad man without a fancy promo. Guy did a minor thing and he completely snaps on him (well, a minor thing to most folks. Texans WOULD consider that a major insult).

Yeah. Wrong time for a great promo like that when it came to long term booking. Henry was just going to be the first challenger for Cena and everyone knew he was going to lose. Doesn't take away from the actual moment though.
Vicki was a great heel. I always loved the promo where the crowd booed so loud every time she opened her mouth that we couldn't hear her to the point where Cena had to ask the crowd to quiet down.

Edge was one of the last good heels we've had. Legend Killer gimmick Orton was another good one, too.
Right now they are obviously trying to get Rusev some serious heel heat. But really the only legit heel imo is going to be Lesnar when he comes back. Going to be interesting to see the reaction he gets.

Lesnar is going to have some NUCLEAR heat when he returns, and even more so when he wins the title. It has to be inevitable at this point that he will have the gold sooner rather than later.

Is it that hot in the arena?

The best way to get heel heat is by naturally being heelish. For example, Cassat's Real Deal Wrestling star MG HURST doesn't need to do anything to get awesome heel heat. He is a natural born villain. When he comes, they hate!

CM Punk was a pretty great heel. Always hated when he turned face, because he was so on as a bad guy, but he was just really uninteresting as a face.

He went so far as a heel the last time that it was pretty weird that he was almost instantly a face when he came back.

Let's also not forget that arenas are now well better air conditioned. The fans weren't just pissed off because what was happening in the ring they were pissed off because they were overheated and it was easier for heels to take advantage.

Whip out your johnson and piss in a hell hole...
Anti-American gimmick will always give you heat, no matter how shitty you are at your job.

Remember when R-Truth turned on John Morrison and started smoking a cigarette out of nowhere?
I found that awesome and really effective for some reason.

Batista is the best heel they've had over the past year!

CM Punk's heel turn on Jeff Hardy is one of my favorites. Right now I'm digging heel Seth Rollins.
I think credibility is important to a heel. Alberto Del Rio, despite not having much heat, manages to carry himself with such dignity as a heel, and I feel he's really underrated at doing that. Del Rio's a natural bad-ass who you can tell actually believes in himself. Chris Jericho worked so great as a heel in 2008 and 2009 too, just because of how dark he got.
They were all heels that could get the job done. It feels like that for every win Orton gets, he suffers another loss, and it's hard to take him seriously when The Authority tells us he is meant to be head and shoulders above the rest in the company.
One thing that I like about Seth Rollins since his heel turn, is that he hasn't lost a match. Keep it that way until he gets in the ring with Dean Ambrose. Make Rollins an overachiever that people just can't beat.

yeah, you'll never duplicate that 70's/80's "escape the arena" heat, at least on WWE/TNA etc type shows nowadays but to say there's no such thing as heat anymore is daft. Even the smartest of wrestling fans still want those moments that make them "believe" and are willing to suspend their disbelief to do so, it just takes the right "performance"
the best heels nowadays are the guys that are a bit of a prick and really don't give a fuck what people think of them. See: Batista, CM Punk, Brock Lesnar etc

heels in the "traditional" sense are such an archaic dinosaur of the industry. KodS is right, fans are too smart for that shit
the modern day heels are gonna be guys like Batista or Cena, who the "smart" fans hate. meta-heels. Sure you'll still have your lowest-common-denominator fan who will absolutely despise Rusev because USA#1, but that demographic is making up less and less of the whole with each passing year
