View Full Version : Is there any real benefit to a six-sided ring?

I guess it differentiates from WWE, but I'm not so sure that's a good thing. It looks like child's play to me. Completely distracting from the in-ring action. It adds nothing of value to any match. Almost everyone is trained in a traditional four-sided ring, I would imagine. You can't even call it a "squared circle". You can call it a "hexagoned circle", but that would make you an idiotic asshole.

Any defenders of this crime against humanity?

I guess it kind of helps them relate more to ultimate fighting because people will associate different polygons with that sport (people are also really stupid). It seems just to be a huge risk for talent because they aren't used to it and could possibly take spots that would otherwise leave them unscathed, but leave them hideously injured and unable to perform.

Listening to Taz and Tenay try and put it over is even making me angry (wactching Impact from yesterday right now, for the record).

It is one step closer to my dream of an icosahedran ring for wrasslin' & dragons battles

THE DEMON KANE would be the Dungeon Master, naturally.

From what I've heard on podcasts and such, the 6 sided ring is more rigid and is therefore worse for bumping. Think this is why Aries was against the move back.

It's also harder to perform top rope moves as your feet are positioned at different, less sturdy angles.

Also, they changed to a 4, going backwards is not progression.

I'd have used the 6 sided ring exclusively at Slammiversary. Maybe have the Main Event be as Six Sides of Steel cage match, as much as I'm against having gimmick matches shooed-in to feuds because PPV concept.

Can't stop progress, I guess.

More of a gimmick to attract attention I think. Quite a few talents have SPOKE OUT on the issue of safety, as the angles of the ropes coming from the turnbuckles are different, making it more difficult to balance. Double A TGMTEL was not happy about it, nor was Roode, if I remember.

Is it really progress, though? (I know you were being facetious)

It's not progress, as XL pointed out while I was facetiously replying to your response.

it's a gimmick, nothing more. And a pointless one at that

They use to push the extra angles and shit as a way to allow so much more action...

Seems like they should have just made a 30x30 ring.

Anybody Thrilla
07-18-2014, 02:42 PM
The one thing that they mentioned about the ring on Impact that kinda almost sorta maybe made a little bit of sense was that the smaller distance between the turnbuckles made for a more taught rope, meaning more spring would be provided when hitting said ropes...but even still, so the fuck what.

I used to like it as a way to be different from the WWE....then TNA just went full retard

the biggest issue I have, at least with the tapings in NY is that they can't fit the whole ring in a wide screen HD picture.

Even can be played on an octagonal table, so they just have to add 2 more sides to their ring.

I think UFC has a trademark on the "octagon".

Call it the six sided and some ring or six+ ring, maybe Mike and Tazz plus 6. Something catchy and hip like that.

It was good for those X type matches and maybe helping out the lucha-style of the X Division but other than those, not really.

Ended up being a big time waster for new wrestlers since it took a lot longer for them to adjust and retrain themselves because of the 6 sides.

4 sides are good, 5 sides are ok, 6 sides are toooo muchhhh

From what I can tell, from working in both (yea, I've done some lucha matches) that there's more room in the ring, so you have more room to bump and throw yourself on rolls. You can say the ropes are "technically" tighter, but I like them super tawt either way. The only major difference is the amount of steps you have to take and the timing when hitting the ropes. That's why when Hogan, Flair, Natsy Boys, etc came and have been working in the same style ring for 20+ years, instead of getting use to a new ring...... they changed the ring

Hulk Hogan DID, however, have experience in an 8-sided ring. :shifty:

It's an attempt to be different. Some traditions are still around for a reason though. A 4 sided ring is one of them.

I'm in the minority here who thinks 6 sided ring is better.. Cos well, isn't that how TNA started in pre-2005-06 era of it?

SlickyTrickyDamon

Six sides isn't better. It did make TNA unique but it wasn't better. They fire all the TNA originals except for EY and they expect people to fall back love with tna just because of the ring.

Do any schools actually train/teach on a six-sided ring? If they want guys to succeed without getting injured all the fucking time, I would think that they'd comply with certain industry standards.

Has TNA gone back to the 6 sided ring?

The 6 sided ring was really good for the X-Division. The X-Divison were really able to utilize all the angles on the ring especially TNA.

TNA had a lot of problems before Hogan and Bischoff took over, but the 6 sided ring wasn't one of them. Especially since the ring they use is so fuckin small. The 4 sided ring made TNA look even more like a joke. Obviously bigger picture it wouldn't have made a difference for TNA if they stayed with the 6 sided ring, but still.

XL

Maybe they could rework my idea of having it be a one night thing for Slammiversary and tie it into the Destination X PPV. Sell it that the X Divison guys benefit from the bigger ring, giving them the advantage when they cash in Option C.

Is the change to a 6-sided ring permanent, or is it just a thing they're doing through Destination X?

They should make the ropes in the Ultimate X matches more like zipwires so that people can grab on and go flying across the ring for high speed drop kicks. And stuff.

The only thing the six sided ring did for TNA was give them an "image" of being "different."

But different does not equate to good. Monster truck sumo matches off of building is different, but not good.

Cause their 4 sided ring is so small. It's looks minor league.

It was fine with WCW, because they had such big names and hot product where I don't think you noticed... I never really paid attention to it.

TNA with a 4 sided ring never sat well with me.

TNA's microphones are also triangular, which always terrifies me when someone takes a bump near one. Seems like only a matter of time until somebody gets one embedded in their spine.

You are all bitching about TNA "copying" WWE. They bring back the one thing that is definitely different, and you shit all over them.

Fact is, they will never be WWE, not even close, but what they can be is different. Something different to watch, and the last couple of weeks have been fantastic.

Theo Dious

It makes them different and that's a good thing. TNA needs its own identity. They should never have gone back to 4 sides; the wrestlers would be done bitching by now.

I was very surprised by the reaction of my non-wrestling fan girlfriend when I put TNA on Sunday. She remarked that the show looked a lot better (being in New York) and that she liked the 6-sided ring as it made them different from WWE. Got me thinking about the way a "casual fan" might consider it.

Might as well go crazy and try a 14-sided ring.

14 sides and instead of ropes they should use Twizzlers.
