“I think the audience was challenging us to give them something a little more straightforward — good old-fashioned wrestling instead of laborious talk or long, drawn-out stories,” says executive VP John Gaburick. “The long-form story lines that take forever to play out were not that effective.”

TNA Head of Creative John Gaburick earlier this month to ESPN’s GRANTLAND.

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Impact on Wednesday, September 24 scored a 0.81 rating, down from a 0.88 rating last week.

Impact drew 969,000 viewers, down 13 percent from last week’s audience of 1.11 million viewers.

Yesterday’s TNA numbers, based on a “straightforward–good old-fashion wrestling show.”

————————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Why does John Gaburick THINK anything when he has the numbers at his disposal that TELL him everything he needs to know? No matter what year it was, or what company I was working with at the time, when I crunched the numbers after every show the non-wrestling minutes always out drew the wrestling ones. That is a FACT, not something I dreamed up over the course of 20+ years, but, a proven fact. The truth is that over the last two decades nobody ever picked apart the weekly numbers like I did through quarter hours and minute-by-minutes. Why? Good question. Well, for me—I had no choice. My livelihood depended on the cold, hard facts—RATINGS–opposed to what I “personally” liked, or didn’t like. The wrestling purists would never go through this exercise simply because of what the facts are going to tell them. As the great Disco Inferno simply put it on the Swerve, “Wrestling doesn’t draw.” And, then there’s your third category, those that are too lazy. IN MY OPINION, Gaburick, Dixie Carter and Spike TV fall under this category. Dixie Carter told me herself a few months back when I asked her for the minute-by-minutes, and then questioned if anybody at TNA was looking at them. Her answer, “No. It’s too time-consuming.”

Wrestling fans will always watch a wrestling show. Casual fans—who are not fans of wrestling—won’t. BUT, they will tune in to watch what they are accustomed to seeing on the other channels, such as; drama, comedy, horror, romance, conflict, sex, “reality”, all elements of a wrestling show other than wrestling. The Attitude Era made that point crystal clear. Yet, no matter what the numbers have dictated since I’ve been studying them from 1996-2014—”By God, we’re going to give them wrestling!” And TNA did on Wednesday night. All wrestling—nothing else. The numbers speak for themselves.

Yes, there are going to be those that are going to scream, that TNA’s low number might have had something to do with its top stars not being on the show. Ok–whose fault was that—MINE? The top stars were probably not on the show because with TNA’s ridiculous shooting schedule, they were probably all tapped out “working” wise. I get that, these guys are not machines. But–what about a promo? What about some backstage hi-jinx? No—”We’re going to give them WRESTLING!”

Remember, I was working as a consultant with TNA as these TVs were being laid out. Gaburick’s direct quote was, “The New York crowd is going to want wrestling, so we’re going to give them wrestling!” Vince McMahon taught me my first few months in the business that you never play to the HOUSE. What that means is that you don’t book, write or perform to the live crowd watching—you perform to the MILLIONS at home viewing your show on their TVs. That’s the WWE Universe they’re always talking about. That’s the MONEY.

Case in point–Gaburick decided they were going to give the NY crowd—all 750-1,000 that showed up at the Manhattan Civic Center–wrestling because that’s what they wanted. OK—what about the 250 million people watching TV at home—what did they want? Ask any member of the Brand, when I did my podcast on Wednesday night right after IMPACT, I basically said that the ratings the next day were going to be the drizzlin’ S***S! How did I know that? Am I David “FREAKIN’ BLAINE? I knew that because I did my homework for the last 20 years! The casual television audience–-the MASSIVE audience—the ONLY audience that matters to YOUR BUSINESS—aren’t wrestling fans and aren’t going to watch a straight forward wrestling show—EVER!

God, it’s just so damn frustrating. What don’t they understand? It’s just simple math. LOOK AT YOUR NUMBERS! Bring in a college intern FOR FREE to break them down! WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?! You need to learn and understand what they tell you—then adjust, and carve out a direction from there. You can’t base your entire business, on what YOU THINK-–UNLESS YOU’RE JESUS HIMSELF!!! You need the factual evidence and YOU HAVE IT!!! Do I need to go back and publicly release all the data I passed along to you while I was consulting? Why do you ignore that? Why don’t you give the masses what they want?!

It’s just a joke. It’s a shame that I care more than you do, while I’m sitting here and you’re sitting there.

Keep “THINKING”.

IDK, listening to Vince Russo talk about bad creative decisions in pro-wrestling is like listening to George W. Bush speak about how many bad decisions Obama makes as President. Even if Russo is right, remember the source here had the same oppurtunity to make a good product and did MUCH worse. He helped put the final nails in the coffin of a multi-million dollar company with his own creative decisions, and at times made the only real alternative to WWE in recent years close to unwatchable as well.

With that said, is a STRAIGHT wrestling show something most people are gonna wanna watch? No... to quote Jim Ross, "The steak needs sizzle". The promos and storylines help fans invest emotionally into a match, and make the outcome matter to them. My personal example; last night I was at a WWE House Show and was for the most part bored. What got me into things was I knew the characters and what they represented, and I knew some of their storylines. Without that, I was just watching 3 hours of men fake fighting with each other.

Still, wrestling is apart of the show and should be the center of attention. With the storylines build in, the wrestling is great because now it goes from men fake fight to a battle between two forces with something on the line... be it titles, power, or pride. Russo's problem though is he never seem to have ANY faith on the wrestling holding the show with a few storylines set it. EVERYTHING had to be a storyline, with something that resembled pro-wrestling thrown in. To go back to the sizzle to the steak metaphor... we went from a jucy steak with a little sizzle, to an overcooked tastless steak that had nothing but sizzle... and you can't eat sizzle.

...Sorry, went on a little longer than I wanted to, but will finish here with a link to an article Lance Storm wrote recently on WCW booking (specifically when Russo was in charge)... http://www.stormwrestling.com/061214.html. The whole thing is a decent read, but paragraph 6 where Lance questions Ed Ferrara's (Russo's right hand man) logic on so much storyline vs. letting the match speak for itself, and Ed's dumbfounded-ness to the whole thing is my favorite part.

I dunno.

I'd rather watch CM Punk versus John Cena (pre-WrestleMania 29) than any segment ever. But that's just me.

The WWE Network: Worth Well Over 9.99

In January the WWE launched the WWE Network. The network is an online streaming service like no other. The WWE Network is like every other streaming services except that it offers live events every week and live WWE PPVs once a month. The first WWE PPV that aired on the WWE Network was WrestleMania XXX. If you have watched WWE at all for the past nine months you know what the WWE network costs. We all know how much the network costs because they say it every week multiple times. The advertising is non-stop but it has to. It is time that the WWE stops saying how much the network costs and starts showing how much it is worth.

The Network is the best thing that the WWE has ever done. It really shouldn’t be this hard to get people interested in it. I’ve already mentioned the live PPVs that is covered every week. The Network would be worth the listed price if it only offered the monthly live events. Also included for the cost is every single WWE, WCW and ECW PPV EVER. They are adding more television programs including Saturday Night’s Main Event, WCW Monday Nitro, Monday Night Raw and Smackdown. Also every single week they have hour-long documentaries including WWE Countdown and the Monday Night War. WWE Countdown is a show that shows a top-ten list on various topics of interest in the business of sports entertainment. The Monday Night War is an extensive documentary on the history between WWE’s Monday Night Raw and WCW’s Monday Nitro. So far they have covered topics including the New World Order, D-Generation X, Mick Foley, Stone Cold Steve Austin and Extreme Championship Wrestling. The show is hosted by Keith David from “They Live” who is great in his delivery on the history of the most exciting time in sports entertainment history.

If these shows aren’t enough to keep you interested there is more. The WWE network has WWE Main Event live every week. On Thursday nights the crown jewel of the WWE Network airs: NXT. NXT is the developmental brand of the WWE as you can see the future stars develop before your very eyes. The first ever live event broadcast on the WWE Network wasn’t WrestleMania XXX it was NXT Arrival. This show set the stage for what has been the crown jewel of the WWE Network. These live PPV like events need to happen more often. They should also air on a Sunday for a change. It is time for the NXT Superstars to prove that they deserve to be on a Sunday PPV. The NXT show is the best pure wrestling show produced in the last 20 years. It’s all about wrestling and all about watching budding superstars become the future of the WWE. As their t-shirts say, the future is now.

The constant advertising is what driving people away from the WWE Network. It’s as simple as that. The programing is top notch and well worth the price. The constant price mentioning comes off as insulting the people who don’t subscribe as cheapskates. It’s not a very good idea to insult potential customers. On the last PPV Michael Cole mentioned several times that people watching on traditional PPVs paid 49.99 for Night Of Champions. You will not get more customers by insulting them!

As a day-one subscriber I’m telling you all that the Network is worth well over 9.99 a month. It is time for the price to not be mentioned on WWE television at all because we already know what it costs but as I said before we need to be shown its worth. The best way for that to happen is to ask customers to do the advertising for you. A stupid music video that sounds like Blink 9.99 isn’t going to cut it. WWE should be asking for short videos from the members of the WWE Universe. Let them tell the story of how great the WWE Network is and how much service and fun it provides. Have them talk about how they are re-living some of the best WWE moments or sharing it with the next generation of fans. Or have the same stories being told by WWE Superstars. You can have videos posted using the hashtag #worthmorethan999 or something shorter definitely something shorter.
