Its coming close to that time of the year for the annual TPWW Gammys Awards thread.
Just like every other time, nominate the games you want considered for the Game of the Year award. Changing some things this year with no limit on nominations allowed (keep it reasonable in length) and just going to pick out the best 4 games from everything nominated.
Also willing to consider suggestions for new categories for the Gammys thread. Last year's thread as a reference to what were the categories: http://www.tpwwforums.com/showthread.php?p=4342934
The actual Gammys thread arrives some point late next week.
poop poop poop fart. Who cares.
Let's face it, Smelly Meatball's "The Gammys" have been fucking boring and continue on a downward trend. That's why it wasn't taken seriously last year and, if we're not careful, it won't be this year either.
Let's inject some life into this thing.
There's nothing wrong with the standard nominations of "Best WHATEVERTHEFUCK" but let's get some new categories in here.
For example:
Let's hear your nominations for:
BIGGEST FUCKER
Who or what was the biggest MotherFucker in video games in 2014? And I'm talking about a real Son Of A Bitch. I've heard those birds in FarCry 4 are big MotherFuckers. The Shrine of Athena in Dark Souls 2 was a real MotherFucker. Spelunky wasn't 2014 but for me, those bats are always real MotherFuckers.
WHO, pray tell, WAS THE MOTHERFUCKIEST?
Or, dare I say, THE BIGGEST MOTHERFUCKER?
Speaking of MotherFuckers, an absolutely terrible trend in gaming right now is releasing broken ass shit. And then apologizing for it and slowly releasing patches until it's almost functional 8 months after initial release date.
That's the worst.
BUT WHO HAD THE BEST OF THE WORST
BEST APOLOGY
Ubisoft comes to mind for their bullshit with Assassin's Creed. DriveClub still isn't working. Do we have heists yet? Is Battlefield fixed? Halo matchmaking, that's still wonky right?
There's A LOT to choose from here. When voting time comes, all nominations will include a screenshot of the developer's press release apology stating how they're working hard on it and yaddayadda.
And then YOU get to vote which one was best! :)
BEST LEVEL
What does this mean? I dunno. You decide.
BEST DLC
Was there any additional content that was released in TwentyFourteen that was actually worth the price of admission?
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Other than (insert poster name)'s penis, what the biggest letdown? A game that was released in 2014 that you were really looking forward to but in one way or another (and hopefully you'll type about those ways) didn't meet your expectations.
BEST GAME YOU PLAYED THAT WASN'T RELEASED IN 2014
This is always fun. Best game you didn't get around to until 2014 because you are a very busy human being.
More categories to follow if I can think of them and if I can steal them from various www.com websites.
I love you.

Apparently Dark Souls II is the only "new" game I played this year.
So I nominate Dark Souls II.

I'm not knocking on Smeat btw, I hope he knows that.
I just... want a little more effort. Maybe a tag team betwixt the two of us can make this fun.
Actually, a little more effort from all of us couldn't hurt really. More discussion, debate, etc. It doesn't have to be Kalyx levels of intensity but feel free to share you're views on why your nominating something instead of just copy/pasting a game title and boxart picture.

Any interest in adding a "Best Genre" category? Where we nominate what the best genre of 2014 was.
RoXer
12-15-2014, 10:24 PM
Or "Best (insert genre here)" and then nominate games form that genre.
For example: Best JRPG of 2014
But only have one "Best (insert genre here)" category
RoXer

Or we could do both.

Dragon Age - The Reasons
Music/Sound - The music isn't IN YOUR FACE but comes along at the right times, and helps add more depth to the current environment/situation. I won't go into spoilers as far as the music goes, but there are some really cool storyline moments where music shines. Also, stop and listen to the bards in taverns, they sound AMAZING. Found myself stopping to listen nearly every time without even realizing it. I play with Turtle Beach headphones because I really enjoy sound. Combat sounds are also very satisfying and differentiate among skills. Melee can get repetitive at times, but that is to be expected in any game.Tavern song collection in tags below. They may not be the "best" but are pretty amazing for ambiance.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/nKh4N1FzA6I" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Visuals - I play on Xbox One. I am not a graphics whore who will whine that there arent 100 more pixels on my screen, so I couldn't care less about 1080/60. The environments are both huge as well as beautifully created. The transition from The Hinterlands (starting area) to the swamps or even a desert. Each new environment brings new details and environmental effects that are unseen and (not often) repeated in each zone. Two of the hardest textures to master (fire and water). Lighting, fog, snow, rain and especially lightning strikes are all very pleasing. Lightning struck a tree I was near and the tree glowed orange like the end of a cigarette (cuz lightining and science!). Small things too, like characters keeping equipment on during cut scenes just gives it a little extra (Charlotte) flair.
Gameplay - I'll get the negative out of the way first. Character creation is lacking. I understand the amount of content placed into the game, but I felt there were a lack of options for creation such as hair (facial too), face types, tattoos than previous games. Also, the camera can be frustrating during certain battles. I find it to be subjective however, and worst when playing a dual wielding rogue that moves around often. When "teleporting" behind enemies, the camera tends to float below or above my character, making it difficult to see the action.
Now, the rest is wonderful. My main character is a dagger wielding rogue, but I have spent time with other classes via the party. Every class is incredibly easy to play and the combat, outside of boss fights, isn't terribly difficult if you pay attention to the situation (fist pumpin like a champ) and adjust as needed. Threat models are in this game, so the typical tank/dps/healer (sorta) setup is standard. Though there isn't a true healer until a specialization is unlocked, there are other methods of mitigation such as guard (warrior) and barriers (mage). So far I have only encountered one boss fight and it felt like a very tactical, drawn out fight that wasn't just "tank n spank" as it is called. Mages pew pew like there is no tomorrow, whether it is the auto attack or actual spells. There are few things as satisfying as setting an enemy on fire and attacking it while panicked. The combat can range from very simple to very tactical (dragons, looking at you damnit!). The need to learn the patterns/attacks of enemies is necessary if you don't want to end up dead (which I have many times now).
The story is great too, especially if you take your time to become immersed. Read the codex entries, talk to NPC's and get a feel for the world. It will be much more fulfilling if you do.
This faux review may not read well, started it before 6AM, slept for 4 hours and haven't had coffee yet.

Agreed and 110p glad I waited on a purchase. My only problem is the "raid progression" style for gear. Had I spent weeks/months on end grinding for gear just to have it replaced by vendor gear, I would be very pissed. To know that will happen every 90 days for now would make me rage harder.
Great game if you have a team of friends to raid with, but gearing is questionable at best.

There is no definitive winner for me this year. I just started Dragon Age or else I'd probably say that. But this year I thoroughly enjoyed Infamous: SS, Wolfenstein: The New Order, and Assassins Creed Unity (to be fair, I never had a single issue the entire time I played it. It worked flawlessly for me from the day it launched.)

Biggest Fucker definitely goes to the Honey Badger in Far Cry 4. Eagles are a pain, but they're easy to deal with. Badgers take a whole fucking clip to die.

The repetitive combat is what is ruining it for me. Specially with my first Quinari tankish warrior. Play a last gen hack and slash like Kingdoms of Amlalur and you will see how lacking this engine is. I guess I was stuck on the fact that I adored Origins but even though the storyline and coversation function was lacking, the game play of Amalur KILLS all Dragon Age titles, even on PS4.

Upping the difficulty and using the tactical mode to better coordinate battles makes the combat a lot more fun and engaging.

I will try this tatic more the next time I play but I have also bought GTA5 (on PS4), WWE 2k15, and Far Cry 4 recently too so I dunno when I'll get back to it.

Amalur was much more repetitive for my money. Every encounter was identical.
However a game as big and long as inquisition will inevitably become repetitive.
