View Full Version : Talking Point of the Week: Why are "ho" and other derogatory terms still a thing in wrestling?

TLP Talking Point of the Week:

On Smackdown, Cena called Lana a ho multiple times. Dean Ambrose recently called Stephanie a ho on Raw. Back in October, the Rock said similarly colorful things about Lana. Why is this still a thing in wrestling? How is language like this acceptable today, especially on a PG show?

Because it reminds us "older viewers" of the "good old days" when everybody was a "ho" or a "b*tch" etc..... and thus gets us to theoretically cheer them for it.

I feel like WWE can remind us of the "good old days" in other ways.

Myself, I have never been too big into the "name calling".... even back in the heyday of Y2J vs. Stephanie McMahon I was like "uggghhh, just stop"

Not in ways that will make people go "OH!!! DID YOU HEAR THAT?! PG IS ENDING!!!!!!!!"

Why is "ho" or "f*ck" unacceptable language in the first place?

not that this is really the point, but lana's character isn't even portrayed as being overtly sexual. sure, she accentuates her assets, but it's not like her and rusev are having live sex celebrations. so are all women just hos by default in the wwe universe? it just feels cheap and overplayed and unnecessary.

Only the heels.

Back in the Attitude era, any time a woman turned heel it meant instantly that she was a ho/DAMN JEZEBEL.

Similarly, seemingly only faces can call someone a ho. If a heel did it, it would be an awful, reprehensible thing.

Slut shaming in 2015 is completely stupid, especially since more often than not the character being shamed has done nothing to deserve it. In what way has Lana been a slut? Because she wears short cut dresses?

I see Carmella in NXT basically going the route of Eve Torres during the cringe-worthy Zack Ryder "hoeski" angle. The woman will be portrayed as a bitch and a slut just because she doesn't have feelings for the guy the fans want her to like.

I love how they censor the NAO entrance music in particular the word "Ass" yet its not censored when Road Dogg does his shtick in the ring....

Y'all are taking this way to seriously... It's not "slut shaming", and it's not "unacceptable". Ho, bitch, etc are pretty common insults and have been for decades. Calling someone ho does not imply you're "slut shaming" them at all. Hell, it doesn't even hold any sexual meaning here at all. It's no different than if Cena had said "You're a dookie breath". Only difference is that when he says ho y'all are bitching about political incorrectness whereas if he'd said the previous comment you'd all be bitching that wrestling was too childish. It's professional wrestling for Christ's sake. Lighten up. I'm pretty sure you all knew what you were getting into anyway when you started watching.

This reminds me of when Test use to mistreat Stacy Kiebler, and the announcers made him out to be the most god-awful human being on the planet. Then on some PPV, Steve Austin stunnered Mae Young for no reason other than 'coz he's stone cold steve austin' and the announcers were all "bah gawd! What a stunner to Mae Young!!!" lol.

It may have something to do with a majority of wrestling fans being simple-minded misogynists and such.

Never got the morality of wrestling. Hence why I think marketing it towards kids is a little silly.

I think this could be true of the casual fan, especially. TNA recently made Bully Ray the protagonist in a story where his mission was to put a woman through a table.

I was watching Fully Loaded 2000 yesterday, and it is weird to see how often women get beat-up like really casually. Perry Saturn attacked Chyna and Albert and Test tossed Lita around just because. It worked for heat, but it's kind of odd to imagine Jason Albert now sitting behind an NXT commentary desk and talk about "right and wrong" when he's actively clubbed women half his size over the back of the neck for fun.

Anyways lay off it. Babyfaces calling heels names and getting cheered has always been a thing in wrestling. Calling someone a bitch or ho is no different than Gorilla Monsoon calling Sherri cheap. Society in general has just moved to a place where stronger words are generally more acceptable.

"Shawty, I don’t mind If you dance on a pole
That don’t make you a ho"

Those are lyrics from the most recent song from multi-platinum recording artist Usher.

We live in a society where girls refer to each other as 'sluts', 'hoes', and 'bitches' in the same way one black dude might refer to another as 'nigga'. Is this right? Is it different because they're "owning" the derogatory word? I'm not sure either way, but I think you might be over analysing it.

And white knighting involves a real female; Lana would constitute a fictional character.

In WWE terms.
