View Full Version : Describe what makes Kevin Owens a badass and not a fat neckbeard w/ a beer gut

I've seen him wrestle but many have not and they think he looks like a HABM. Describe for them how he isn't just some fat dude in basketball shorts and a wife beater.

It's really more of a cutoff t-shirt than a wifebeater.

That is the guy who came out last week during the Cena segment right? He needs to become a lackey for Wyatt.

Owens exudes an air of believability, from both a promo and in-ring standpoint. He may not be the most buff dude on the block, but you probably wouldn't fuck with him in a bar. He's goal-oriented and non-remorseful, which makes him dangerous.

I dunno, why was Mantaur a threat to anyone?

Well where do I begin?

We are entering a stage in wrestling where the wrestlers are starting to be smaller than what they used to be. They don't have to have the classic look of a wrestler anymore. Paige and AJ are different as well as Lita on the women's side. On the men's side, Daniel Bryan, Neville, and Dolph Ziggler.

Wrestlers are getting called up for the sake of wrestling. They are performers that they can market in a specific role. Enzo Amore is NOT. A prototype wrestler, but his performance and charisma is so off he charts is makes up for it.

The same can be made about Ceasro, he's not big on the charisma, but he makes up for it with what he can do in the ring that the average person can get behind.

Lastly every Superman needs a Lex Luthor. Cena can't be an effective hero without an effective villain. KO is fitting that bill. Someone stated that he's being treated like Brock Lesnar with mic skills. He plays the role of a villain very well. And the extra stuff he does and the fact he says he does it for his family gives him layers of character.

Most people don't go that deep, but what do,I know...

Well said and sums up my thoughts quite effectively and eloquently..... His passion is also very evident, he didn't fall into wrestling like some, he was a fan since he was a kid, living his lifelong dream.... should he ever turn face, he has that going for him as well....

I'd argue that The Miz is doing quite well for himself.

Vastardikai
05-22-2015, 02:21 PM
There are his motivations: Part of it is bitterness at getting passed over for so long before he got his moment. Part of it is his wanting to get what he wants to support his family, everything and everyone else be damned.

He believes everything that he says, which helps make the guy special on the mic. He's a fat guy in a business that has been short on fat guys lately. And despite being a fat guy, he can go very well.

All put together, he could be the best heel foil for Cena since Edge or Punk, if they let him.

His promos are so matter of fact and he never really yells nor is he even that forceful when he gives them(though he can be) but at the same time they carry across the idea that he is an extremely dangerous opponent. Its almost impossible to hate his motivations but at the same time he is a dick.

Pretty damn complex wrestler I could go on forever.

I asked this question in the casual forum after seeing some gifs of him standing over John Cena. Mick Foley was believable as a fat guy because he was legit crazy and would kill himself to win a match. Usually fat guys are also really tall so they're just general big units like Viscera. This guy doesn't seem tall. Just kinda looks like a redneck wrestling fan or something.

Emperor Smeat
05-22-2015, 03:44 PM
His badassery revolves around how well he's played the arrogant bully character.

He's not the sore loser or random attack variety Sheamus has been but more calculated with his bullying. Tries to goad people into feeling sympathetic towards him because all he wants to do is provide for his family but shows no sympathy for others well being.

Him being calm with promos could be explained as either him trying to lull the other guy into a cheap shot (ex. Cena) or knows its not worth the effort to get into a shouting match when he's just going to beat the crap out of the guy in the ring (ex. Riley, Zayn).

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2015, 09:15 PM
He's gritty. He's not your usual cartoony heel. He's a dick that says all these reassuring things about his family and this being just a day at the office. In the ring, he muscles guys around effectively enough that he does look credible. He also pulls off some pretty athletic stuff, so it's not fair to say that he is out of shape, even if he looks it. He's built his body for practicality, and not for fashion.

The dude might not look like a bad-ass, but he is a bad-ass. Aesthetically, the dude doesn't even wear proper wrestling attire. He just puts on his fighting clothes and goes and fights. There's an accessibility there that people can latch onto.

Plus he's a great chickenshit heel. It doesn't always make sense for a bad-ass to run from his opponents, but the way Owens does it makes it seem like strategy, with a little aura of "maybe this guy can beat me if I'm not careful." He sells his opponents in the ring, even as he cockily no-sells them on the microphone.

I haven't been as into the act as others, but I'm genuinely excited to see him work with Cena. I think he's an anti-Cena type that we haven't seen before. I think they could become great rivals. And the dude has apparently got himself into better shape, and he likely will continue to do so as he goes on.

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2015, 09:15 PM
Vince and Kevin Dunn obviously believe in him enough. He's enough of a "different vibe" that he actually somewhat meets their "eye test."

Damian Rey
05-22-2015, 09:44 PM
After his promo on Cena, very easy to believe he wasn't running from Joe, just waiting for the chance to make it matter, aka paid appearance. Owens' character wouldn't mix it up with Samoa Joe for free after a title defense. The man has to support his family after all.

Damian Rey
05-22-2015, 09:47 PM
But yes, the practicality of his character, the way he carries himself both on the mic and through ring work makes me a believer. He stood eye to eye with Cena, in front of arguably the largest American audience in his career, and sold himself like he'd been there the whole time. He's a natural.

Not to mention, he'll turn face at some point, and when he does the same shit bag heel that makes you hate will be easy to get behind when he does turn.

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2015, 09:54 PM
I really think that a Kevin Owens vs. Tyler Breeze feud could be money. I have no clue who I'd rather see play the face and the heel, but the dynamic there could be easily mined.

Damian Rey
05-22-2015, 10:00 PM
Could have Owens destroy Breeze's face via punches, face stomps, maybe a belt shot, and put him out for a while. The beating ruins Breeze's face, costing him, for now, his modeling career, endorsements, etc. His life falls apart while being on the shelf. He returns with a vengeance against Owens. You can redo his model gimmick from there and move him up the main roster.

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2015, 10:13 PM
Sounds like a good possible route. :y: You could also just have Breeze call Owens an "uggo" and have Owens beat the shit out of him leading to some matches.

Damian Rey
05-22-2015, 10:17 PM
Then after the redemption, the crowd can chant "you're still gorgeous" to push Breeze back into the model gimmick.

Mr. Nerfect
05-22-2015, 10:19 PM
It'd be similar to the "Undashing" Cody Rhodes gimmick, but it could work. I'd honestly rather see them take that direction with Fandango, to be honest. Have someone take out his leg, then he plays a bit of "Phantom of the Opera" by hiding in the shadows, then he returns all bad-ass.

Breeze's model gimmick can work forever.

I didn't mind Ohno's look. It was the same sort of "my body is built for efficiency and not aesthetics." When he growled and stuff I felt that it sort of missed the mark however. It just felt...disjointed. The whole gimmick took itself really seriously, and Owens is doing the same thing now and it's somehow working. Ohno should have been cockier. "God's Gift to Professional Wrestling" or something. He should have had robes and capes as the announcers put over how he doesn't look the part -- then he kicked ass.

Quite simply, because he's being built as a badass, and not as a fat neckbeard.

His "selfish, disingenuous dick" schtick on the mic is helpful to that end, but ultimately, he hasn't been torn down to be remade in WWEs image. They didn't act as though he just walked in out of nowhere and just became a wrestler the day he appeared on NXT. He's been booked to look legit, put over on commentary, unburdened by some gimmick that would hamstring him with trying to portray some abstract idea, and all around just handled well. They didn't put him in a "why should the audience care?" position, and it doesn't look like they're going to anytime soon.

And as long as they continue a slow build and not a cannon blasting hotshot to the top of the main roster by this Survivor Series, he should be fine.
