Sony are ponying up the rest of the cash, this is really just to make sure the interest is there from more than a vocal minority. Plus, a lot of the cash was used on creating the engine back then.

Only $250k left to go.

Yeah, I usually use a debit card fine.

Best announcement reaction ever. Only needed 3 musical notes and a petal

Never played Shenmue. Always wondered what all the fuss was about.

Hope they do an HD version of the first two or something, so I can catch up.

It was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead of its time really. It was story based, but there were all these side things going on ranging from having a job (which kinda is forced early in the game), playing mahjong in parlors, going to arcades to play "classic" Sega games, etc.

Most of it would seem "commonplace" in an open world game today, but this was 1999.

The story never really complete either, so there's that.

Dreamcast emulation does play them flawlessly now, but I hope so too. Showing how fast this made it to $2 million and almost 3 right at this moment, Sega has to see it and realise that they're leaving money on the table.

The most interesting thing I've heard is that 3 is NOT the conclusion. Yu Suzuki has apparently said it won't be 16 games anymore, but probably 5 games or maybe 4.

YAY!!!! I get to pet more kittahs and play moar arcade games :D

Seriously though, I hope they have a decent amount of "classic" titles in the arcade(s) in this game, that would make it more fun.

Sega have signed over the rights apparently, so they have no involvement in this. They've just retained rights to Shenmue 1 and 2. There might be no classic Sega arcades in there, but I hope I'm wrong.

Same programmer though - hopefully he will fight for it. I know he was the original programmer for Space Harrier and Hang On, maybe he will have pull because of that.

HOPEFULLY!

So if 3 is successful and the fans enjoy it, 4 and possibly 5 will finish the story. Works for me.

According to series creator, they might add more platforms in the future as stretch goals for the Kickstarer fund while its going to take $10 million minimum raised to make Shenmue III into an actual open world game.

Also hinted he's currently looking at other sources for funding besides just Kickstarer and Sony for the project.

Some Good/Bad news:

The good news being the voice actor of Ryo was confirmed to be returning for Shenmue III.

The voice actor who played Ryo in the English versions of Shenmue 1 and 2, Corey Marshall, has been confirmed for Shenmue 3.

"We would all like to thank Corey-san for coming back," says an announcement on the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter page, "and especially for all the support he has given to Shenmue over the years."

"The support for Mr. Marshall to reprise his role as Ryo has been just overwhelming!"

And that's not all. If you've a few thousand dollars just sitting around, donate $1000+ to the campaign you'll get "a very special message" from Ryo himself.

The bad news being the Kickstarter fund has lost a lot of steam since its first day. Raised around $2.6 million after its first day and only another $1.2 million by the half-way point.

Might be able to reach the $5 million stretch mark but doubt its going to hit the real goal of $10 million that the creator desires.

At one point was on track to smash Bloodstained's record but the confusion about the project, Sony's status, and the real amounts needed piling on caused it to lose a lot of momentum.

I don't believe any of that.losing momentum shit. This is Shenmue 3 and the people that wanted it have funded it. There isn't that many people and the it was announced on a stage so everyone heard it about it at once.

Shenmue isn't that popular. Hopefully 3 changes that, but I'm not holding my breath.

In case you hadn't heard, Corey Marshall, the English voice actor for Shenmue's Ryo Hazuki, is returning to voice the character in Shenmue 3. As of this week, Masaya Matsukaze has been confirmed as well, meaning both the original Japanese and English Ryo are now on board.

Shenmue 3 is closing in on $5.8 million with just eight hours to go. It surpassed the funding total for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night earlier today, making it the most funded video game project in Kickstarter history.

Ended up dethroning Bloodstained as Kickstarter's most funded gaming project.

The crowdfunding campaign for Shenmue 3 has drawn to a close, raising a total of $6,333,295.

That sum makes the project the most funded video game campaign in the history of Kickstarter, beating out the previous record holder Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night and its $5,545,991 total.
