Huge feature announced by Microsoft. This is available right now in beta if you're part of the XBox preview program and by holiday for full release.
It is going to be like the OG Xbox compatibility on the 360, as in only tested games work. MS have setup a page for you to vote which games they should get working though, so vote for what you want to see:

I haven't been able to watch most E3 coverage as I'm in the office all week. How is this being accomplished? I was under the impression that the "architecture" of the system was different and thus the discs could not/would not (CAN'T STOP WON'T STOP) in the new console. Or was that just for PS4?

Just software emulation. It's pretty impressive that MS is able to emulate the PowerPC CPU on this hardware.

Yeah, it's like playing an emulator on your PC. Keep hoping they'll announce support in Windows 10 to play 360 games now.

They should since Microsoft said digital games would be covered as well. All up to the publishers though since they get final say.

It makes sense though. Apparently the code of the game is utterly awful, so now the studio is shut down, it can't even be easily ported to PC and played that way. The PS3 version is much worse than the 360 version, so 360 is the only way you can really play it right now.

I'd say getting RDR running will be a nightmare. This is a strange feature. It's inherently difficult, and it's only really worked well where there's been the physical hardware in the system: PS2 had an actual PS1 chip in it, Wii U has a Wii chip in there, the first run of PS3s had the PS2 hardware in there and still struggled.
The 360 backwards compatibility with the original Xbox had very spotty coverage, I'd say this will be the same. It's probably alright in that they can add a load of these games on the Arcade. Otherwise it means that loads of people will just pick up a load of old discs for a few bucks in second hand places.
COD is a weird choice, I mean the old servers are still running and that's great, this would technically extend that expectation for a lot longer. I wouldn't hold my breath that they would run perfectly well though.

They got the PS2 emulation a lot better in the end. I have a modded PS3 without the BC hardware and it can play pretty much every PS2 game I throw at it. I doubt they'll ever get PS3 on PS4 in the same way, but I really hope they add PS2/PS1 games even if they only support PSN purchases.
Nintendo has benefited from using the same family of chips for the last 3 consoles. The Wii U can play Gamecube games perfectly when modded.

Not so much if they:
A) took the time to make the XBONE marketplace less shit
B) added additional and highly intrusive "disclaimer" during the purchase process that beats you over the head with the fact that is indeed a 360 game
C) took the time to make the XBONE interfaces more intuitive
D) took the time to make the XBONE marketplace less shit, and
E) took the time to make the XBONE marketplace less shit.
Seriously, the games don't appear to be chronological. They sure as hell aren't alphabetical. They're just randomly listed as available titles. Unless you specifically know what you're looking for in a search, just browsing titles is nonsensically labyrinthine. And since it is already done better on the 360, why is this a problem?
As for the BC itself, just seems to be two glaring issues. First is the dual "friends" thing seeming to wreak havoc on parties and invites... at least I guess that's what's causing the issue. Second is any (X) function doesn't quite seem to have a workaround, it functions exactly as it should on the One, which means no checking achievements and such. Though I would have sworn I saw how somewhere. ..
And the list of games compiles from what you may or may not have available. I only had 5 titles. 7 with disc games included. Then, two of the games inexplicably vanished off my list, though still available to play from my games section instead of the preview menu.

Opted out of the preview program because I was tired of being booted offline for updates every other week. They really need to prompt that once you dashboard, not in the middle of a fucking game.
Question for anyone who's been able to play 360 games on the One...do your saves come with you? Im curious how they go about that, or do they simply expect you to start all over?
Tom Guycott
06-22-2015, 11:38 PM
From what I understand, unless you cloud saved for whatever title, you start from scratch. That's where the BC gamesaves go as well if you start anew.

Isn't this feature releasing officially for Christmas? How does that line up with them giving Fallout 3 away with Fallout 4... I guess you can wait.
Also Fallout 3 struggled enough to run on a 360. If they manage that port somehow, hats off to them.

As per the report, I'm a little bummed about the Defense Grid DLC (I imagine I'm the only one). It actually does include ONE of them; "Borderlands" (no, not related to that one in any way), but didn't include "You Monster", but I assume that has to do more with license issues with Valve with it being Portal themed.
In fact, I'd guess that the delay between now for preview members and holiday window for official launch may be as much for resolving any digital rights issues by then as ironing out technical bugs.

Ubisoft recently joined the growing list of studios interested in having their Xbox 360 games be made compatible for the Xbox One. Teased they will do it more as a way to revitalize certain IPs like the Splinter Cell series.
The latest nod of approval comes from Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot. During a post-earnings financial call this morning, he said that the new Xbox One feature is "very good news for the industry." He applauded what it means for consumers to be able to revisit their library despite jumping forward in console technology, but he also mentioned what it means for Ubisoft. "It will help some of the brands, like Splinter Cell for us, come to Xbox One, which is great," he said.

For those in the preview program, RARE revealed the reason why all their currently available BC games have to be re-downloaded. Official reason is related to the upcoming Rare Replay game for the Xbox One and them wanting to make sure select games in the Rare Replay set will also work as a standalone if they are included in the BC program.
A representative for Rare and Xbox has responded by stating "The process is a necessary step that allows gamers to play some of our beloved titles with or without Rare Replay, that includes these titles and 21 more. This action is only to better the fans and allow more people access to the titles."

You have to be invited by MS or a friend. I will be more than happy to send an invite your way this evening.
It does take about 3 days for them to verify your system. Games you can download will appear in the "My Games and Apps" area, all the way to the right with games that are ready to install. I should clarify though - that is if you OWNED the digitial versions.
If you have a disc version of a game, you will need to put the disc in the X1, let it download and keep it in while playing.
Downloaded Gears of War I last night, but no chance to play yet.

Microsoft revealed a small catch with backwards compatibility when it comes to DLC from Xbox 360 games.
“Right now, Backward Compatibility does not emulate the Xbox 360 store and new Xbox 360 games can be purchased on your Xbox 360 or via Xbox.com,” a Microsoft representative said to GameInformer. “We will support both digital and disc-based entitlements for Xbox 360 games running on Xbox One.”
Which is a fancy way of saying if you already own the DLC from when you first played the game on Xbox 360, all your DLC should be ready and waiting for you ... but if you didn't pick up the add-on the first time around, you won't be able to buy it via the Xbox Store on your Xbox One.
In order to get DLC from Xbox 360 games not bought before, it has to be bought from the official Xbox website or from the Xbox 360's marketplace. Can't purchase DLC from the Xbox One's marketplace. Afterwards, the DLC then becomes transferable to the Xbox One.
