View Full Version : Do you think Brock Lesnar is the ultimate throwback?

I think I'm going to write a blog or something about this at some point, feel free to contribute my mission.
BUT is this guy not the ultimate oldschool bad motherfucker who was a wrassler? He's the type of guy in the territories, who would "go into business for himself" if need be, and take care of his own shit. A Hansen... a Brody. Hell you could even compare him to Sid, because you know if Brock had a softball team, and he was passionate about it, the Beast Incarnate's appearances would be scarce during said time. (lolll sorry that is for the Squared Circle Gazette listeners)
I personally enjoy that Brock can do what the fuck he wants outside of the ring, because it essentially means he almost has free reign when he performs, and it's part of the reason why when he performs it's a big fucking deal. As great as John Cena is, he is a company guy, and he's predictable. But Brock is NOT a company guy, but he has probably the same amount of clout as Cena, if not more. They NEED him. He'll draw doing what he wants. He leaves WWE, he just needs one more loss in the UFC to have him set for life. He has his own nest egg. Much the same as the Hansens and Brodies, Brock can throw tantrums and "leave the territory" because he'll be fresh somewhere else. He could smash the WWE title and mail it back to them, with a picture of himself giving the middle finger on top of the aforementioned destroyed belt and not have to worry about burning bridges. So he's a bit of a cunt when need be. And it's why he's fun, and it's part of why he gives us that bit of a tingly feeling when we get to see him...
....and I think that's what's missing from wrestling. Just the right amount of cunts.

Yeah, there is definitely something standout about him being such a "loner" and able to get the best deal for himself. It definitely makes him seem larger than life and a bigger superstar than anyone else on the roster.
The fact that he is a legit badass and is booked like one also adds to his prestige. Would stop short of saying he was a throwback though as many of the older guys wouldn't have been built like him, and in a lot of cases, wouldn't have been the super athlete that he is.
They were more seriously tough guys who knew how to work crowds and the business like the back of their hands. They wouldn't have had Brock's physique or profile outside of wrestling. Although they were massive stars in an era where wrestling was legit and extremely popular.

I feel like Brock's popularity outside of the ring, is akin to what the territories were... aka somewhere else for Brock to go, so he may keep fresh and not get stale.

I dunno, early on Cena had a signature called the throwback, and also in his Doctor of Thuganomics vimmick he always wore throwback sports jerseys...

that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about, unless you are trying to be clever.

In a way, Brock seems like someone we have never seen before, but I guess some of the guys back then were wrestling freaks too. I do agree that Brock brings a simplicity and conviction back from an older era.

I always compare his path to three others that came up around his time, Orton, Cena and Batista.
I'd say he took his own path into his own hands. The three mentioned above were always company guys with a little bit of Batista shooting movies outside the WWE Studios Universe. Really glad Guardians was a success and got him the exposure he deserves. Really cringed when the crowd shit on him during the WMXXX build.
Back to Brock, he is the real deal and went to the UFC and conquered that shit. All the accolades Heyman promos about is real and we need that in a stale, non-middlefinger era

As has been stated, he has a legitimacy to him. He's not some larger than life superhero come to life. Like a Hansen, Bruiser Brody or even Haku, he has a legit "I'm a real life bad ass so don't fuck with me" vibe that you can neither teach nor manufacture.
If you were to book Cena the way Brock has been, it'd be completely unbelievable. But give Brock an unstoppable, unbeatable Terminator gimmick and it has been absolute gold.
The fact that he's also not always around and shit gets real when he does show also helps. A lot.

Brock really should have been given the Terminator entrance at WrestleMania.

I think this is a great assessment. Brock makes title matches to me seem VERY important. Hell, even when he is in a non-title match, him going against someone will either 1.) Instantly make the opponent a house-hold, legit star if able to hang with Lesnar 2.) Make his mystique that much more awesome because he DESTROYS them, but not in an Andre The Giant way, in a "Goldberg" way, but with proven legitimacy from outside of the WWE.
I'm actually surprised he hasn't been in more movies.

I wish the WWE did try to build this mystique up with someone else. Sheamus would actually be a good candidate. To see him working long matches with everyone every week kind of makes him seem like "another guy." The dude is massive, can move about as well as a guy of that size can, and sometimes protrudes an aura of complete bad-assery.
I think once he won the Money in the Bank briefcase, Paul Heyman should have attached himself to The Celtic Warrior. Why? Because Sheamus holds the silver bullet and golden ticket to taking down The Beast. He offers his services to Sheamus, in exchange for Sheamus signing a deal that stipulates he will not cash in the Money in the Bank title shot on Brock Lesnar. You stand those two together and they'd look like killing machines. Brock wins the title, but Sheamus maybe eventually costs Brock the belt and then cashes in on someone, and Heyman has A LOT of difficulty keeping them from killing each other.

I think it also helps that Brock doesn't speak much. He grabs the mic and yells shit sometimes, or he puts on a chilling sit-down interview; but for the most part, his job is to destroy shit. A guy like Owens can talk, and talk, and talk and it adds to him; but some guys talk and it just makes them sound like a human auditioning to be the next twenty-minute opening segment.
