It's "stand back." Like KK said, he just does it with an accent, so "stand" sort of sounds like "sta-yun-duh." I live in Alabama, and believe me, people with that sort of accent love to put extra syllables onto words.

His catchphrase (besides "whassupwitdat") has ALWAYS been "Stand Back." So why would it be different in the song? "Stay in the back" doesn't make any sense, either. When something dangerous is coming your way, people don't tell you to "stay in the back" unless there's a different room or something.

He's saying stay in the back of the locker room. Stand back doesn't make sence.

"Stand back" makes perfect sense. It's something that people said all the time in old movies or comics when something dangerous or powerful or whatever was coming. You wanted to stand back so you could see it, but not get too close and get hurt. Nobody ever said "stay in the back," which essentially means either stand in the back of a crowd so you can't see anything, or like you were saying, staying in the back room and cowering. "Stand back" is sort of another way of saying "watch out." "Stay in the back" is labeling you as a wuss.

And again, listen to any of Hurricane's promos when he says it. He always, ALWAYS, says "Stand back," so again, why would his catchphrase be any different in the theme music?

Yes it does. No one says "stay in the back," so they wouldn't get it if someone said it. It's too awkward, and why would they bother when there's already a phrase with all the implied connotations and meanings behind it?

And I repeat, GO LISTEN TO HURRICANE'S PROMOS. He has never once, in his whole stay in WWE, said "stay in the back." They don't change around the Rock's or Booker T's catchphrases in their theme songs; having Hurricane say "stand back" in his promos and "stay in the back" in his theme song would be retarded.

Savior, you still haven't answered the main point of my argument. Hurricane does not ever EVER EVER say "Stay in the back" in his promos. Therefore, there would be absolutely no reason to change it around for his theme song. It's stupid and pointless.

And yes, "stand" is a one-syllable word, but like I've been saying, southern accents/ebonics accents stretch things out and add a certain twang to the words, making them sound like there's more than the one syllable. Like I said, listen to any two southern people talking to each other for more than 20 seconds, and you'll know exactly what I mean.

I don't care what the majority says, I'm with Savior on this one, it's definitely "Stay in the back."

So what if he doesn't say it in his god damn interviews? Does Jericho always say "Break down the walls!" in his interviews? No. Does Benoit ever say "There's no holding me back" in his? No. Hell, HBK doesn't even refer to himself as a sexy boy anymore, and it's still in his music.

The Hurricane may say "Stand back!" in his promos, but that's because he's talking to someone who's right in front of him, so he's telling them to stand back. Imagine how ridiculous it would be for him to say "Stay in the back" during a promo.

Hurricane: Stay in the back, Coach! There's a hurricane comin' through!

Coach: But... we ARE in the back, Hurricane.

Hurricane: ....so we are. WHATS-UP-WIT-DAT?!

Jesus. That was idiotic.

First, Michaels is going to stick with the same music, whether or not he still calls himself a sexy boy. It's been his music for over a decade, except during DX. You do you really think it's going to change now?

Jericho's music was established before his character was really developed. They stuck with it.

Benoit's music didn't have lyrics until crosspromotion. Half those songs have nothing to do with the wrestlers involved. :|

Now, with Jericho and Michaels, the songs were tied to the gimmick. Chris had the WALLS OF JERICHO, and HBK's whole gimmick was the HEARTBREAK KID (Sexy Boy). Both work. The only example that doesn't is the one for a promotion. Hurricane DOES say "Stand Back" in his promos, and with the tendency to tie in their gimmicks to the music in some way, it makes no sense to continue hammering away that it's really "stay in the back!" Occam's razor, baby. It makes no sense to overrationalise what is very obviously a conflict of accents.

I was proving the point that the argument that "because he never says 'Stay in the Back' it means the opening words can't be 'Stay in the Back'" is invalid.

I then used Jericho, Benoit and Michaels as examples. I didn't say that their music is stupid because they don't say the words that are used in their music, I was merely proving that catchphrases have nothing to do with entrance music.

Your examples, however, were counterproductive to their own "logic."

Why?

Let's see...

Jericho's theme says "Stopped and dropped by the Walls of Jericho." Guess what Chris' finisher is? The entire song has lyrics dealing with the Walls of Jericho.

Shawn Michaels...Let's see...He's using the music that's associated with him. People still associate the Heartbreak Kid with "Sexy Boy." I don't know why.

it use to say How do you like me now.
And he used to say that for HOW long?

In fact, he used to follow it up with "I hate you...You're so fat."

Both Stevie R and Hardcore Holly have used their "lyrics" as catchphrases. Of course, no one remembers Stevie saying "I'll show you! You'll see!" because he hasn't been on TV (other than getting stomped by H and Dave and his weekly Heat job) in, like, three years.

stay'ndaback! THERE'S A HURRICANE COMING THROUGH

but seriously, this is probably all the power of suggestion...

I made myself hear "stay'ndaback" so why couldn't others?

"Sandy's got back, there's a hurricane comin' thru!". I hear that and "stand back." It's funny how long this thread has gotten for that one lyric.

Babybacks! There's a hurricane coming through!

It makes sense because nobody gets between Hurrican and his Chili's ribs...

He stressed the "D" sound. Not sure how many people know that The Hurricane has a speech impediment. What you're hearing is the vowel like sounds of just using the actual letter D. Sit there and just make the sound for a few minutes. It's gonna sound like "Da," which sounds like "the." Also, when he says "stand" the a is obviously as in apple. If he were to say "stay," he'd make it more obvious with the way he talks.

I don't get the entire point of this though, much less what makes you want to believe he says "Stay in the back" so badly. Perhaps you are retarded, insane, whatever the case may be, godspeed.

It's directed to the wrestlers, for them to stay in the back, while the Hurricane does his jobber greatness

I sent him an e-mail and am anxiously awaiting his reposnse. I was very afan-boy and positive and mentioned no insider terms just in case he read it while Flair was nearby.

I'm pretty sure "How do you like me now" was Holly's catchphrase when he had the "Big Shot" gimmick and was fueding with the Big Show a few years back.

I would like to keep that blocked out of my memory thank you very much.

It's "stand back." Like KK said, he just does it with an accent, so "stand" sort of sounds like "sta-yun-duh."

Hate to bump an old topic, but...

Farooq, when imitating Hurricane, at one point sexplicitly said "stand back--There's an ass whoppin' coming through."

So what Savior's been trying to tell us is that everyone--including a wrestler who was scripted to use the line--is wrong.

I was thinking about mentioning that, but I couldn't find an audio clip to back it up. In fact, I'm pretty sure it was Bradshaw who said it, because right after that, Faarooq looked around and went "......Damn!" and started using that for months.

But I'm nitpicking again. Your point still stands.

I'm from NC (Raleigh) and have met Hurricane before he was a wrester (my grandmother actually baby sat him :o), I assure you he says stand back. It's just the (unfortunate) accent that most people in the state have. :(

My friend is down in the area of Fayetteville (I don't know how to spell it) Even tho he's a native of Keene NH and a resident in a couple of place in Vermont, his accent is now starting to sound very much like the rest of the state. So you don't even have to be born there... ;)

The accents up there are horrible. I'm the only person in like a 50 mile radius who can pronounce a fucking R.
