View Full Version : I think WWE needs new gimmick matches, do you?

These days gimmick matches are all about creative stunts more or less. Tables are always padding the fall, ladders being broken in half... It's been going on for about 20 years and it's a little old for me. We have seen the evolution of the ladder match from WM 10 to WM 31. Over twenty years of reinventing the wheel. Are there any matches that WWE should swipe up from other promotions?

With AJ in WWE, I'm thinking it could be interesting to just straight up steal and re brand Ultimate X. I think it would be a fresh breath of air in the gimmick match scene. How many ladder matches can we have a year? The cage match is simply lame and Hell in a Cell will never be what it once was. Are there any other matches from promotions you watch that WWE should swipe up? Or do you have a concept yourself that would be worth watching?

nothing wrong with cage and cell matches if they are done well. And ultimate X is pretty bad.

wrestling needs less gimmick matches, not more. The less you use gimmicks, the more they mean when they actually get used.

I see your point. But for a creative company you'd think they'd have created something solid in the last 10 years but to my memory I don't think they have.

As long as gimmick matches are few and far between and actually have a reason behind them, then I am ok with what they have.

This.

For example, the Money in the Bank was a really great idea when it first started but the WWE quickly watered down its specialness once they had multiple cases or in recent years as just a cheap way to get out of big mistakes they made in booking.

I guess the ultimate gimmick match is no gimmick. Just non sanctioned fight. When Patterson and Slaughter fought in the Garden... that shit was incredible. Would love for WWE to model Lesnar/Ambrose after that. Lesnar has been taking the stiffest shots ever since his return from UFC. Ambrose used to wrestle death matches. These two guys are going to beat the shit out of each other and I'm going to love it.

Is it the "street fight" that you love, or did you have investment in one or both performers (read: cheering/booing one over the other).

Less gimmicks, more quality writing with current wrestlers.

Agreed. They really over-rely on gimmick matches as themes of entire PPVs these days, and a lot of times they are so terrible it really detracts from what made the great earlier gimmick matches so awesome and makes all the competitors look bad.

Not saying this is always the case, but enough so that it has become a serious problem which WWE should take a serious look at fixing.

I'm the king of dumb gimmick ideas
Falls count somewhere in the arena but the two wrestlers dont know where and they have to fight it out all over the arena to find out where. they are allowed to ask the ref if they are hot or cold.

Some holds barred match - At ringside there is a huge drum like they used to do to pick the rumble order and instead its filled with the names of moves/holds, including some that are wrestler specific such as their finishing manuevers. Every 45 seconds a move is selected and the ring announcer announces it to the wrestlers and crowd. DQ for using a barred manuever unless its locked in at the time of the announcement.

Dro, you need to book a comedy promotion. The sooner the better. Falls count somewhere and some holds barred are both brilliant ideas that someone like CHIKARA could probably kill with.

Right now, straight one-on-one matches with actual drama and build seem more special than an actual gimmick match. What the WWE needs more of is heat.

The gimmick matches are gender-specific. Cage matches, hell in a cell, hardcore, elimination chamber all go to males. Bra and panties, paddle on a poll, and that other stupid shit all go to women. It would be pretty stupid to do an exclusively women's gimmick match with men, but I'd honestly be interested to see a womens cage match or even a goddamn No DQ match, which I don't think I've seen.

Although I have always wanted to see a Triple Threat with the rules that you must beat both your opponents to win the match. For example -- the Fastlane match between Lesnar, Reigns & Ambrose wouldn't have ended with one pinfall, but only when Reigns had pinned both Lesnar and Ambrose.

I'd also sadly probably be over-using 2/3 Falls Matches. With the WWE Network available, I'd be tempted to have guys having a decent feud and are known for their ring skills (eg. Owens & Ziggler) to be given a special taped segment to air exclusively on the Network, with maybe a preliminary match or two.

OPENER: Sami Zayn vs. someone (to hype Zayn's Takeover match with Nakamura, as the commentators talk about the shitty things Owens has done to Zayn to build his heat)

*Dolph Ziggler promo*

SECOND MATCH: Dean Ambrose (the former IC Champion) vs. Curtis Axel (former IC Champion and Paul Heyman Guy so commentators can talk about history of IC Title and Ambrose's WM match with Lesnar)

*Kevin Owens promo*

*Hype videos for both men*

*Special ring introductions*

*IC Title match*

Not a huge fan of the TLC PPV, always seem like they have to force a feud for one of the 4 standard matches on the card.....

I know that this isn't a new gimmick match, but it has been rarely used in the WWE for about two decades. The 60 Minute Iron Man Match. If they would just take two superstars who can really go, and build a feud with them having great matches on Raw and SD every week. I know guys like Kalisto, Ziggler, Kofi, and Neville can go, but I would want it to be main event on the PPV, so I'd prefer the more popular wrestlers obviously. Of course when Orton comes back he can go, as can Reigns, and I do love Orton, but it would have to be huge, and neither Orton nor Reigns have been catching my interest when they've been in the main event picture their past few go-arounds (well, Orton's past few and Reigns' current .. thing). I love guys like Owens, Wyatt, Taker, but come on, 60 minutes?
I'd say it would work with Rollins, Cena, Ambrose, Brock, and if built up as a main eventer down the line, AJ Styles. They are the only five guys I could get into this type of match with on the current roster.
Brock vs Ambrose
Seth Rollins vs AJ Styles
Or replace any with Cena, build up the feuds by having both wrestlers trading wins, and have them hopefully for the Championship main event a PPV in a 60 Minute Iron Man Match. That's the one gimmick match that I would like to see at this very moment in WWE's current product.

EDIT:

Just rereading that, I noticed how bad ass those matches would really be ...

60 Minute Ironman Match for the WWE Championship
Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose
or
Seth Rollins vs. AJ Styles

... Take my money.

Hah Brock can't go an hour anymore. He is literally purple after suplexing a few guys. But AJ and Seth iron man would be incredible.
