Sting's wrestling career is over ... TMZ Sports has learned.
Long story short ... the wrestling legend messed up his neck real bad at his "WWE Night of Champions" match against Seth Rollins back in September -- and was never able to recover.
Sources connected to Sting tell us he was evaluated by several doctors who all agree -- it's just too risky for the wrestler to get back in the squared circle ... so, he's decided to hang up his singlet.
We're told the 56-year-old was formally diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis -- a condition affecting the nerves that can result in extreme pain and discomfort.
In fact, it's the same condition that forced fellow WWE superstar Edge to retire in 2011.
Our sources tell us Sting may make his official announcement next month at the WWE Hall of Fame ceremony in Texas ... but we're told it's a done deal.
As far as Sting's future -- it's up in the air. We're told Sting is open to a non-physical role with the company ... but we're told no formal offer has been made.
Sting was a legend in the ring ... rising to superstardom in the late '80s before becoming the face of the WCW and a huge fan favorite in the WWE.

At least he got his Wrestlemania moment…

It sucks that he had to go out with such a brutal injury (though he's lucky it wasn't worse), but at 56-years-old, he shouldn't have been wrestling anymore, even though he's in good shape for a guy his age.

But RDD if you use the facts so accurately, people don't have anything to be outraged about, nor do they have anyone to blame.

I'm being flippant - I obviously don't attribute any blame to Rollins. As I've said on here on more than one occasion, Seth Rollins is the best in the business right now.

I just don't want to focus more on the point that he was brought in to play a part in WWE's final declaration to anyone who didn't already know that WWE is way, way better than WCW ever was.

It was better late than never. Regardless of his win loss record, it's really good that he got to shine in WWE and have that run, even if it was short lived. Kinda weird because Warrior in some ways was similar. After all the years of nobody thinking his return would ever happen, he finally makes amends and reconnects with Vince... and then he passed away a few days after his HOF induction. It's like both Sting and Warrior were vindicated at the end but taken to soon. Not that Sting really needed to be wrestling at his age, obviously (the career ending injury for example). But even at his at his work was really fun and the matches were good.

Sucks, Sting is one of the greatest of all time and I hate how WWE used him. Honestly don't want to see him in a non wrestling role in WWE. I would rather he returned to TNA as a GM or something.

Or record a copy of all of Sting the artist's songs so they can just replace unintelligible words with wrestler Sting's snippets. Who'd be any the wiser.

Also, clearly we must now see Singer Sting v. Biker 'Taker ONLY, with Surfer Sting ONLY as special guest referee.

Just play it out in video-games.

They've even acknowledged it as a dream match-up you'd think they'd want to pull the trigger on it.

As for the match potentially sucking, it's not like that has ever stopped Vince and co. in the past.

Sting denying a report from TMZ that said he's officially retired as a wrestler. Either TMZ's sources were wrong or Sting himself changed his mind recently.

After the website reported last week that former NWA, WCW and TNA champion Sting had officially retired and would be announcing such, a TMZ cameraman caught up with this year's headline WWE Hall of Famer, who said his neck was "OK" and that he wasn't "officially" retired. You can see the video by clicking here.

There is not a chance in hell that WWE will ever medically clear Sting to wrestle again even if he wanted to.

He's likely to just officially announce his retirement at his HOF speech.
